Hey, strange question... anyone know if there's a case for the first-gen iPhone that let's you attach one of those little cell phone charms to it? I found a nice one that I want but can't use it.

so is the kindle app really nice? i see it's not 100% integrated, but you can buy a book from the safari site and read it instantly. do a lot of people use it, or is it not that great (customization, etc)?

I thought this must've been posted here ( I think they're a week old), but then again, it's just a mock-up, so maybe nobody cares. I did think these looked kinda nice, though:

I don't normally go for colours, as they may be more interesting at first, but you get bored.
Oh man, I really wish the new black one looks like that. I'm loving my black matt iPod and I don't really dig the shiny 3g black.

Most likely in the next three weeks.
..Right?

Sometime around WWDC.

Is there a good copy / paste app?

Not being able to copy / paste URLs into email & twitter messages is annoying.

You do know that you can share URL's without copy and paste right? When you're on a website, just hit the "+" and select the option to mail a copy of the link. Easy as pie and no need for Copy and Paste.

ARGH!

My OG iPhone has just succumbed to the Dead Strip bug (more info)

I can't get past the lock screen, because the 4,5,6 number keys don't respond. I'm going to try to restore, but I'm not hopeful.

I'll run to the Genius bar tomorrow and cross my fingers that I can just get a loaner. I can't wait for the fact that I have OS 3.0 installed to completely screw me over.

If anyone wants a new release of MobileGAF, ship me your iPhones! :)

cant you downgrade to 2.xx? didnt follow the 3.0 beta so i assume this is possible

Anyone have an Iphone from Rogers in Canada? If so how do you like their plans, what plan do you have and how much do you pay?

I am thinking about getting one, but everything seems very costly.

I know there are Apps that do this but I would like some recommendations:

An app that syncs people's Facebook profile pictures to your iPhone's address book. I've found MyPhone+ but I was wondering if there are any free applications that do the same thing.

And I'm wondering if it's an app itself or if it's an add on to the default Contacts list. There's something saurik made that displays photos in the actual Contacts list but it doesn't sync from Facebook. If there's nothing that's an add on to the default Contact list, is there a Windows application that pulls Facebook information onto Outlook? From there, I can probably sync that date to the iPhone and use saurik's program to display the photos in the default Contacts list.

Thanks.

Can't imagine they'll launch 3.0 at WWDC. Notifications just went into testing, storekit remains untestable, and gamekit works only between certain models of phone. I will guess that they'll have a RC maybe at WWDC and then go on a bug hunt until about July 17th.

I think they'll want to release 3.0 early to quality test the push servers before releasing this feature to a whole bunch of potentially-new customers, stagger the push server traffic so they can prepare for the launch and not have the services not work, like when they tried to launch MobileMe in tandem with the 3G launch. Seems like the more sensible and safer bet.

Nature of the beast, man. Smartphones with data plans cost major bucks in Canada. I pay $73 a month for 150 daytime, unlimited evenings and weekends, 6GB data plan and the "Every Call" value pack for call display. If you're a long-time Rogers customer, their customer retentions department can cut you a deal if you act indignant enough about the pricing on the phone.

What you're suggesting would just be a continuation of the beta - not a public release. As soon as they release 3.0 notifications HAVE to work since the applications will be registering for push requests as soon as they start.

So the new Zune HD has an OLED screen. Maybe that rumor about an OLED screen Iphone sounds more probable now ?

Maybe. MS has a lot farther to catch up, and might be selling these new Zunes at a loss, which Apple doesn't need to do.

I hope so, since it would improve battery life.

Quick question everyone...a friend of mine recently purchased an iPhone...I'm not sure which version it is.

At the moment, she can't send picture messages. Is there a software update available for this model that will allow her to send picture messages? If so how is it done?

No, what I'm suggesting is that Apple would rather inconvenience established customers with a less-than-spectacular push performance than piss off their new customers and turn them off their product. Its existing customer base would use the push notifications with the full 3.0 software release, allow them to gauge demand for its use and apply server changes to accommodate demand with their new customers. Their current controlled tests with developers is not going to be an appropriate gauge of usage.

She can send them through e-mail right now or wait for the 3.0 update which is coming soon. Provided she has the 3G model. If it is the original, she'd better get use to the e-mail option.

No. Coming in updated OS in a couple months for 3G or newer phones.

I think this might be the trade-off. Improved battery performance is important to Apple, and OLED tech supposedly has a lower failure rate at the expense of longevity, meaning less replacement phones being issued. So the cost balance might appear to even out for them with what they gain from using it. Who knows, though.

Is there a way to tell if you have the 3g model?

This isn't to mention the business problem of releasing the new & shiny OS ahead of the future hardware upgrade. They're going to want to earn the good guy points of the OS features as a bow to tie around the new hardware. Just like last time, the lock-step timing will also serve to educate the public about what the iPhone can do, as the OS-wide features themselves will get much enhanced mainstream coverage over a separate release would have.

anyone have any ideas what to do to help an iphone whos bottom(connector/speaker/microphone area) was dropped in alot of ketchup? I cleaned up most of it, but now the speaker volume has been dwarfed to about 10%....

When was the last time you saw Apple perform this behavior? Apple will knowingly launch push in a less than stellar state for everyone. You'd be surprised how many times they've done this with the OS thus far. Apple is a 'lock step deploy' environment. They push it all out at the same time across the entire platform all at once. It is extremely rare for them to push out an update for one platform early at the 'expense' of another.

Pop her open and clean out the speaker area. Its painful to get 'er closed again, but getting it open isn't that bad.

You don't have much luck with iPhones and liquids, do you. :lol

Phoeniz, what are your thoughts on OLED? I need to hear some truth. Yay or Nay in this upgrade?

I have no idea. I know tons about the API and roadmap for the OS beyond Beta5, but zippo about the hardware itself. OLED is certainly possible - its cheap enough for them to throw it in, but I'm not entirely convinced that they HAVE to do it for this generation of hardware. OLED is really just going to bump up their costs and provide Apple no tangible benefit in the market. The number of people who let OLED specifically determine which phone they are going to get has to be pretty small at this point and limited primarily to techies. Most consumers don't even know what an OLED is.

If I were Apple, I probably wouldn't do it this go round. The iSuppli numbers show that they are already spending 10-17 bucks more per unit hardware than their Android cousins and still outshipping them by a significant margin. The only want I would see them doing it is if they REALLY need to balance the faster CPU with better battery and OLED is the only way they could do it.

That's what I was thinking. Seeing MS pull the trigger on it has me second guessing, but MS needs to feature bloat to compete.

Is there any iPhone app (free or otherwise) that offers ACTUAL realtime stock updates? I love the Bloomberg app (free), but like all others, it's delayed like 15 minutes. I want up-to-the-second updates. Anything like that available? PEACE.

I had the same issue occur a few weeks ago, and the dude at the Genius Bar gave me a replacement. I was just a few weeks out of warranty, but he mentioned something about touch screen failures being covered for the life of the device (or something like that), so hopefully you won't run into any problems.

ok quick question... my friend is being a retard and said she read online that there's a new iphone coming out july 17th.... i'm saying hell NO.... the most they're coming out with is gonna be a firmware update to 3.0

then she heard from some other fucktard that it's coming out... and this dude is trying to make her sell her iphone on ebay so she can use the money to buy this new iphone that hasn't been confirmed by anyone...

he also read it online... he was all like "oh it's gonna have a rubber back and OLED... blah blah"...

so i wanna confirm that there's no info about it coming for sure yet or at all... right?... because i don't want her selling her current iphone and then having the rebuy it

theres no concrete info but a new iphone is coming. your friends friend is just repeating rumors found online. if she is able to strike a new contract with ATT somehow, it probably would be best to sell the iphone now if she MUST have the new one.

although, i sold my first gen iphone 6 months into the 3G lifespan for a good amount, enough to not have to pay extra for 3G. so the value might hold

I was thinking the same thing but the Gruber speculation mentioned the possibility of Apple selling, at a discount, the left over stock of iPhone 3Gs on their website after the new model comes out. How's the market for used macbooks faced with the old white macbooks available for $999 (not to mention the option of getting a refurbished, or using the student/developer deals)?

There is a BIG chance that a new iPhone will be introduced in the next weeks (say 1,000,000,000 to 1).
Does she really need an updated phone?

There is a high high chance an updated iPhone is coming, no one knows what the specs or anything will be though. What he's spouting is all speculation. Personally, I wouldn't sell my phone beforehand. Seems like too much of a pain, especially when it's probably at least a month away.

What planet have you been living on that doesn't have a 99.9% chance that a new iPhone is coming out? It's just as much a sure thing as your life at this point.

"my friend is being a retard" ... LOL!
