so is the kindle app really nice? i see it's not 100% integrated, but you can buy a book from the safari site and read it instantly. do a lot of people use it, or is it not that great (customization, etc)?
quoting myself to see if anyone has opinions....don't own an iphone yet but expect to in a couple months and want to know if it's at least a great way to read all those sample chapters...

Are those supposedly pictures of things coming with the 3.0 update for all iphones or exclusive to the new iphone?
That looks like the new iPhone, look at the second to last pic, the top looks different.

got one.. fuck it!

How close to the last upgrade did they let people do an early upgrade to the 3g from 2g?

Also as for the photos, most of that looks like 3.0 software items though?

I can confirm all of these.

Correction, I can confirm most of these. A couple of these don't display the same as shown with the setup I have. That must be a later or internal firmware release that will be coming out at WWDC or something.

That might be a reflection from a light source. You don't see any difference in some of the pics.

I guess we aren't getting sorted categories in 3.0? It seems like the only natural next step considering how many apps exist. I want some sort of categories page.

Spotlight search is really, really good.

So, when 3.0 comes out with all these fancy new features, does that mean Apple will pull any apps which duplicate the functionality of the phone?
Quite possibly.
But, I would guess if there were apps duplicating future functionality they wouldn't have been approved in the first place.

Indeed. It is quite good. The only problem I have with it is when you go into mail as you won't know which account you're in since that interface was designed for top-down drill in navigation and Spotlight will drop you in it in a random-access way.

How are you all following e3 on your iphone? Do you prefer a certain web site, or is there an app/web app with headlines and updates for the iphone?

Just using Twitter to follow the news.

So, I originally wanted the Palm Pre but Sprint is continuing to sabotage itself by apparently requiring people to extend their contract to buy a Pre(no retail price sales) and they won't bump up your upgrade date like Apple/AT&T did, instead you have to wait.

This angers me and is the icing on the cake.

So, I will probably get the new iPhone as long as it's battery is a bit better and the rumors are true and the back is no longer plastic, as I hate how that feels.

My father has 3.0 on his iPhone and I'm pretty impressed with aspects of it, like Spotlight and sideways texting. It is kinda slow to reorient itself for landscape texting, hopefully that gets faster.

So, yeah. I might be joining the iPhone crew in July. Either way I'm winning this summer.

My memory is a little hazy, but the speedometer screen at the bottom middle looks really like a battery power guage wallpaper/screensaver you can buy from Jamster. I saw it advertised on TV last week.

Edit: by "looks really like", I actually mean nothing at all like :lol ok ok.. I caught a 3 second glimpse on the tv, and i was probably drunk :(

That's the camera app. Someone took a picture of their car's speedometer. It's just showing the new preview icon in the lower left of the camera app, and the still photo/video toggle in the lower right. I think the speedometer is irrelevant.

Available today?

Weren't the previous two iPhone announced and then released a month or so later or something like that?

Available today sounds like you can order it from the Apple Store and they'll ship it to you later vs "Go pick this up RIGHT NOW!!!".

Like the nice little green light to indicate the camera is on if that's real. The little consistencies across product lines that make features like that instantly recognizable to the end user.

I wouldn't take any stock in the text. The sauce claims it's taken from "inside the apple site"... presumably it's a graphic design mock that leaked from Apple's intranet.

And yeah, iSight consistency across all products isn't just sensible, it'd be totally silly for Apple not to leverage the brand.

The idea of being able to instantly video chat my wife when I'm traveling for business makes me giddy.

Why would the Voice Record App turn on the front facing camera?
That just makes me a sad panda.

You're right. I thought of this too. Either they're overzealous and want that light to appear in all the media to make it clear that it's a new feature (since most people will recognize it)

-or-

It really is a rough graphic design where the hardware is fixed, but the software (for video chat) wasn't yet available.

What a weird comment :lol

What is a feature that would make it "great" for you?!

PhotoSwap phone numbers and you've got yourself VIDEO SEXTING!!!

...I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they won't let you do it over 3G, and will mandate WIFI for video chat if it's in there.

VideoChat over WIFI only == FAIL.

Yeah, I honestly believe Apple could easily justify the ROI for 3G video chat strain to AT&T given the increased smartphone market share the first major video phone in America would earn them and the increased revenue per existing customer it would net in upgrades to smart phones from normal talk plans.

That said, I'm fearful it'll require something absurd like "video minutes" as a separate allotment. Hopefully Apple would have been fighting this, since the simplicity of the iPhone EDGE pricing plan was revolutionary at the time.

The feature is too good to be true. What's felt to add? Flash? Faster networks? I'll hang unto the phone for longer than my laptop

I'll feel a little bad for AT&T if the jailbreak community finds a way around that restriction.

AT&T already has videochat on other phones for just a monthly fee.

Either way, it'll have to be a function compatible with another network too since they won't be the only ones with the iphone any more in a month.

Wait, you'll feel bad for AT&T if they choose to prevent people from stepping into a new era of mobile communication and people find a way to do it anyway?

...

I would not take the statement you just made for granted, if you're referring to the US.

Yeah, and AT&T allowed other devices to have the SlingPlayer on them. And do other cool things with mobile video.

But the iPhone is the 8 million pound gorilla, because its users actually USE all of the features that require bandwidth, and AT&T is far more restrictive of what goes on it.

Additionally, because every little thing the iPhone can do becomes so instantly high profile, AT&T knows that anything it allows on the iPhone it must permanently tolerate on its network for all other phones too, or suffer a backlash.

Alright, but I've actually got a bit of inside info on the whole Verizon thing, but I guess we'll wait for the official rollout.

:lol :lol i dunno, it just seems to me like a front facing camera is a significant change that would come with something big, and video chat, to me, is something great :lol

The green light could just be a general "recording active" indicator, for both audio and video.
