That's such a nice mock-up.

If only 't were real. Whenever Apple release a new design of something, I feel it looks so much more modern than the older iteration. I get that vibe from this render. I don't think it's currently viable, however, miniaturisation-wise, as a consumer affordable product.

So what are the chances that AT&T will allow iPhone 3g users to upgrade after one year like they did with OG iPhone users?

As expected, my wife picked up her white 16GB phone (she loves it) and I selfishly would like one of these new iPhones once they come out. I know iPhones have high resale value on Ebay, so I'd sell mine there, but I'd still want some sort of carrier discount even though I have almost a year left on my contract.

Probably next to nothing. The original EDGE iPhone owners actually owned the phone (they paid MSRP when they signed the contract). Current iPhone 3G owners don't own their phone (in AT&T's eyes) until after the completion of their two year contract due to the subsidized price they offered the phone for.

Waaaait wait wait wait. Does that mean that I can't go buy a new iPhone when it comes out and just add on another 2 years to my AT&T contract? I have to actually wait until the contract expires to buy a new one? Or are you referring to upgrading to the new phone but getting an upgrade discount?

Of course, you can always buy the new iPhone when it comes out.....for full price. You won't be allowed to break your current contract and sign a new one without a fee and you won't get any subsidized $199/$299 price without a new contract. The way AT&T views current iPhone 3G owners is that "you still owe us for the phone you have, pay that off and we can give you another discount." The doesn't mean they wont sell you a $699 dollar phone.

In my experience AT&T usually lets you upgrade after a year of use on a two year contract. They of course expect you to sign another 2 year contract but it usually isn't that hard to do.

If they ever give you any shit just say you want to get out of your contract and are willing to pay for the termination fee. I have done that 2x and on both occasions a manager called me back within 15 minutes and gave me whatever I was asking for.

AT&T could always make an exception (in fact, they're going to need to clearly define the rules so there aren't any riots, regardless of whether it represents a change from the norm); Apple wouldn't want to deny its hardcore fans to give them money.

I got out of line for a 3G because I was afraid that the subsequent (this) version of iPhone might have video calling. If it did, I'd need two (one for me and one for Mrs. Juice), so I decided to hold onto my EDGE for a second year.

Feeling pretty good about that decision.

I don't feel you are missing much with 3G. I feel whatever you gain in speed you lose more in battery life. It also doesn't help that 3G users have to pay $10 extra a month for data.

More than 3G I really love GPS built into the phone. Works so well with so many apps. Makes traveling a breeze.

To me though the iPhone is so much more about the software than the hardware. I don't see that changing with the next version either.

Wait, are you really confident about a front facing camera? I can't even make out a lens cover in that pic from cult of mac...

Wait, you'll feel bad for AT&T if they choose to prevent people from stepping into a new era of mobile communication and people find a way to do it anyway?

...
Well when you put it like that haha.

I just don't think their network will be able to handle the strain and they'll get a lot of frustrated customers

Aaargh no no no! That means I'd be stuck with the 3G until like 2010 X__X

This is what they did for me when the 3G came out. I still had a year or two left on my contract (don't even remember the terms of my contract when I got the EDGE iphone....) and they said they'd just tack on 2 more years to what I was already contracted with. I hope to GOD they let me do this again....!

Edit: Yeah, I don't see a front-facing camera on that picture. Maybe they just moved the ear speaker up to make room for a little LED light to indicate when things are recording?

I'm not confident about a front-facing camera. Only confident in two things:

1. A huge credit card bill if there is one.
2. A lot of me complaining on GAF if there isn't one.

:lol will you sit out the year again if there is none?

Heh, good question. I don't have a firm plan yet, because there will probably be over a month to dwell on it come next tuesday.

I just got a brand new replacement EDGE yesterday free, so I could ride that out for sure. My wife actually needs a new phone, so if there were no video chat in the next iPhone, I might get her something unlocked.

Front-facing camera spy shot. Yes yes yes. This is the only thing I've wanted in the iPhone since February 2006. I'm in for two if this is real. (via cultofmac)

that image doesn't make sense, though.

if they're going to promote the supposed iChat video feature of the iPhone, why show the already old microphone image? why not show a person on the screen?

Can't wait until Tuesday. My EDGE iPhone that I bought in July 2007 is getting a bit beat up now. It still works fine but the battery life is definitely a lot shorter than it used to be and I've lived long enough with EDGE.

All I really want in a new iPhone is 3G, GPS, and a better camera. Video capture is just an added bonus. The first two points are covered by the iPhone 3G and the last two through all the rumors seems to be a given for the new iPhone. So I'm good to go!

I am on the same boat, still got OG Iphone but waiting for the Iphone Nano ;O

I love my OG iPhone and prefer the metal back to the plastic in the 3G, but I am so ready to upgrade. I'm ready to get one as soon as it drops.

:O Hope it's real.

A thought:
What if it's like the iPod nano posts where there are 3 or 4 iphones next to eachother all with something different on the screen?

Maybe the light is signalling that the phone is in record mode. They could be using the light for both voice and video, assuming there is video

possible. but those shots always had some overlap. dating back to the ipod mini.

I'm going out a limb (not a long one) and calling that shot a fake.

yes, it's possible the new iphone will have a front facing cam but I don't think that shot is the proof.

I mean, even if that shot is supposed to indicate talking to another person who doesn't have a camera (an esoteric and hard to grasp concept for a single ad to portray), you would think that there would still be an insert view of the you looking into the camera to properly frame yourself.

adding a green light and shifting the speaker up is too easy a photoshop job for me to think it's real.

as for the light indicating record mode, eh, again, I think that putting that concept into a single image ad and not having the bigass screen match up to it is bogus.

I'm saying record mode as in voice record. So in a sense that screen would be matching it. It could be a series of ads showing off different features in each. I don't think it's out of the question to think they use a green light to say the phone is recording.

Not always.

I think the image may be real, but I'm not so sure the green light means a front facing camera.
Nothing else in the ad indicates that. It might just be a status indicator for all we know.

you're right. it's not out of the question. but the green light on Macs has always been used for isight cameras. audio recording has never used it.

I just think the combination of the green light that is supposed to elicit the response that Juice had (ooh, ichat!) combined with absolutely no new images for the screen image makes it a likely fake.

I'm more excited about the chrome rim being kicked to the curb than a front facing camera.

I actually think it is fake (well planned, though). But really, anything that puts more momentum behind demand for video calls is a GREAT thing from my perspective, so I'm happy to pimp it.

That said, if it's not fake, it's reasonable to think it's a very early mock or even just a designer screwing around with a stock image of the new hardware.

That's odd. They don't show white/black for the new one--like the new leaked inventory pic.

cw-090604-1.jpg

The menu itself seems really stupid even without the new entries.

They have:

"iPhone 8 GB" (with space)
"iPhone 3G - 8GB Black" (no space, and there isn't a white one?)
"iPhone 3G" (generic next to all these specific models?)

Blech.

What does your list have?
