Iphone 3G -> 3G S is a much better upgrade than Iphone -> 3G going by what you bolded.

Video recording by itself is a reason to upgrade, and would not be possible on the current 3G hardware. Hence the faster processor and more ram, which also leads to faster app loading and much better performance overall. The 3.2 Megapixel camera, compass, voice control, inline volume controls are just icing to the video recording cake.

If you read what I said again, you'll see that I think the 3G->3Gs is a bigger upgrade than iPhone -> 3G.

Like I said before, good on paper, but what's the point if it's not taken advantage of? The iPod Touch has a faster CPU but you don't see it being taken advantage of. You're not going to see developers exploiting the faster performance and more memory at the expense of 40 million existing iPhone users out there so I see it as more of a non factor than a huge reason to upgrade.

I bet right after the Iphone 3GS comes out next week Apple will roll out their marketing blitz showcasing new apps utilizing the new 3GS hardware. It will take time but atleast the new specs is future proof for atleast a year or 2.

Yeah I know, I was just saying I agree with ya.

I'll take that bet. I don't see anything exploiting it in the near future to make it worth while to jump through hoops to replace a 3G though. By the time apps actually take advantage of it, the next iPhone will be almost out and 3G users will then be eligable to upgrade. For first gen users it's great to update and ya that will be great for futureproof but for someone who hasn't had a 3G for even a year yet who now has to jump through hoops or pay a high premium?

What's the best way to go about getting a 3GS without an AT&T account and about how much would one cost? I am looking to get a 3GS to replace my iPod Touch but I don't want a AT&T contract.
Trying to figure this out myself. I'm looking to stay on T-Mobile as I already am with my 2G.

Compare with PC gaming; are you saying nobody ever makes games for the higher end systems or that no games might run adequately with low specs but significantly better on the faster computer? Maybe there won't be exclusive games for the 3GS but it'll be a different experience while playing - just like Maps isn't a 3GS exclusive but the digital compass enables another feature in the software.

Doesn't matter. It's the "upgrade fee"
:lol AT&T and their shenanigans. Wouldn't it be cheaper for you to just start a new contract, use the Bing discount, take your old number after a day or so and close the old contract? (might have jumbled up the order)

Pre-ordered!

I went through Bing cashback, though I'm extremely doubtful that this is going to work. Better to try than to just assume it won't, though.

what's the bing discount and how to I get some?

1. Go to bing.com
2. Sign up for cashback (look for it)
3. Confirm your cashback account and all that
4. Search "ATT WIRELESS" into the search bar
5. Top link should say "AT&T Wireless" with a cashback icon. Click it.
6. You'll be forwarded to AT&T and that session will be flagged as eligible for a 35% Bing kickback.

The TOS on AT&T's site says that upgrades are ineligible, but people who've upgraded have seen the amount show up at Bing, so who knows.

Since bing took over live it's like the live cashback for retailers like before. Search for att 35% bing or something on bing.com and then look at the sponsored sites up top for it.

WTH, AT&T wants an $18 upgrade fee for me to get a 3GS? booo

I think my quote said something about a one time $18 line activation fee too. Don't I already have a line? And what exactly is AT&T doing to activate it? I think I'm doing that myself!

These things should be called "One Time Rape Charges".

Looks like some of you are forgetting another advantage of 3GS - 2x faster 3G network (7.2MB/s vs. 3.6MB/s)

Yes you can see it very easily being taken advantage of. There's tons of games already that run much better on Ipod Touch G2 compared to other models. Basically every game that has stuttery framerate on Iphone, and hell knows there's too many of them, runs pretty much perfectly on Touch G2.

Hell, my favorite Pinball Dreams runs in perfect 60FPS in portrait mode on Touch G2, whereas it skips frames in that mode on other devices.

You'll see, nothing will prevent devs to implement different rendering paths for faster GPU and CPU. Some of them already do that right now, like that Tennis game that not only runs, but looks better on Touch G2.

Not to mention stuff like web browsing which will benefit hugely from much faster architecture and more memory.

I didn't know iPhone games had adjustable graphics settings like PC games. Learn something new every day.

It's an option, the other being "3GS only." ngmoco has said they're going to have games that scale like PC. Pretty cool.

I didn't know he mentioned adjustable settings at all. All he said was if the game is the same the one with the higher specs will always play better, which is in no way incorrect. Anything that stuttered before on the older software or crashed more often due to lack of ram will be alleviated by the higher specs.

Does anyone use an app to track their daily budget/expenses? I've started tracking it on Excel but if I can do it right after I purchase something it would be much easier. I see a ton of different options and am looking for some personal experience.

I used a thing called balance for the whole month to see how much I had and what I spent it on. You can then take the information and put it on your computer. I don't know if there's better, I know that one is free though.

So pumped that I preordered the 3G S... too bad I just realized that between a $1200 car repair and $2000 in expenses for my Japan trip, this has easily become the most expensive month I can remember.

Accurate.

Anyone know what I need to do to use the 3GS for occasional calls reasonably in Japan?

I think there's like a world traveler @ $5/month to get semi-sensible rates. Then I'd turn off data roaming and not use it. Wonder how much texts would be.. seems like there should be a guide out there for this.

Ok, question for the iPhone collective:

I am a dirty filthy Apple whore, so I will be getting my 3GS delivered on Friday. I already have a 3G, and my GF has expressed interest in it. She is on her parent's plan still, and doesn't want to add on the internet.

What happens if she puts the SIM from her current phone into my old 3G once I get my 3GS up and running? Will the voice services just work? Will it require activation through iTunes, and then she would need to sign up for a data plan?

I appreciate the help!

AT&T's iPhone 3G S pre-orders already sold out
Bad news for folks hoping a pre-order would save them from that yearly camp out in front of their local Apple Store: iPhone 3G S pre-orders have sold out, and folks who are making new pre-orders are being told that they'll have up to two weeks to get a phone. AT&T customers who do already have pre-orders in still have to line up at 7AM to nab a phone, but at least they've got a guaranteed slot if they show up, while the rest of the world will have to battle over remaining stock when Apple Stores open at 8AM and AT&T stores open to general customers at the same time. Looks like we might get a good riot or two out of this.

Damn. I already got mine for delivery so I'm set though.

While I honestly find Engadget to be unbiased to the iPhone, I love how Engadget commenters are so anti-iPhone and Gizmodo and it's commenters are iPhone fanboys. It's like night and day.

Will the 3gs still have a "3g" icon for data? Or is there a new icon for hsdpa?

Is hsdpa available in the same areas as 3g?

I don't think it's available anywhere yet. AT&T says they'll be upgrading beginning this summer.

Crap! By preordering this morning it looks like I'm not going to get mine on day 1. BOO.

Not that I mind a ton, just saying.

Hey, what does your confirmation e-mail say, I think mine is pretty much stating that I'm in the lame up to 2 week wait group:

Pre-orders for iPhone 3G S will ship 7 to 14 days after your order is placed. Orders will be shipped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thank you for placing your iPhone 3G S pre-order with AT&T.

Pre-orders for iPhone 3G S will be shipped with overnight priority and will be processed to arrive as early as June 19, 2009, if submitted by 12 p.m. noon C.T., June 17, 2009. The actual shipment date and receipt of your order is not guaranteed and may be subject to delays for reasons that include, but are not limited to, product availability, inventory, credit issues, number porting or carrier delays, and completion of other required AT&T business processes.

I'm better get mine day one. >=[

Ugh. Generic Replies are generic:

Question:
Is a signature required for delivery of my online order?
Answer:
A signature may be required for delivery of your online order depending on factors such as the type of device ordered and shipping carrier policy.

Does anyone know if Best Buy will be offering preorders on the 3GS? If not it looks like I'll have to get there early on Friday.

Has anyone preordered from an ATT store? What was your experience? Will they hold a phone for you the whole day?

They've never allowed preorders on iPhones before, so I don't think anyone can give a good answer on this.

I'm glad I pre-ordered mine day 1, but just yesterday I found out that our company has a 15% discount with AT&T (I signed up for a new account/number). I guess I need to call them and hope they can give me that discount since my service technically hasn't started yet :/

I think I found a method to enable MMS and Tethering but I'm a bit hesitant on trying it since I don't totally understand it. Anyone brave enough to do some experimenting? :D If so, PM me and if it all works out we can post it publically.

You will pay through the ass.

Text messages are .25 a piece I believe, the world traveller for AT&T is a fixed monthly price which will allow you to pay $1.69/minute as opposed to $2.29/minute. Pretty much when you leave the states, be sure to put your phone on airplane mode, then just activate wifi and use skype where you can. Be sure to buy skype wireless credits BEFORE you leave.
