Had no idea the plans for these were so expensive, me and wife went in to see about getting one for each of us, and it was going to be $200 a month for two phones with only 700 minutes and unlimited text.

We pay just over $100 with Alltel right now, I fucking hate Alltel's phone selection but we can't afford to double our bill for cell phones.

Is that the lowest amount of minutes you can get? You'd be surprised how fast you can rack up rollover minutes.

my family plan has an iPhone and 2 blackberries along with a regular phone, all with unlimited data and texts thru AT&T for $225 a month. You're getting hosed with that offer

How do you use over 700 minutes on a cellphone in a month ? That's close to 12 continuous hours!

That's just about 24 minutes a day.

Three 8 minute conversations a day. Some days you may talk longer than others. Not that I do it, but it's easy to hit 700 minutes, if you break it down.

Ok sure, you can count out weekends.

Let's make that closer to 35 minutes per day. It's still not THAT much if you actually, you know, talk to people.

I normally stay around 200-300 weekday minutes, a few months ago, I had 2 straight months that were closer to 700, then I went back to 200-300.

I think I would sooner go mad than use that many minutes on a cellphone.

No wonder people are getting brain cancer.

There's a 550 plan for $60 instead of the 700 plan for $70. Tehy just never advertise it.

Either way, 2 iphones with unlimited messaging should be 160 before tax. 70, then 30 for each data plan, and family unlimited messaging is 30.

They don't allow you to get it. I tried several times but they insist that the 700 plan is the lowest plans for iPhones.

You can just change it afterwards by calling up customer service, there's no edict about it except maybe at the sales level.

On weekdays, my conversations are usually "go there, do this, meet me here, here's this thing I need you to work on" etc. with the occasional night time conversation. At 350 rollover, I'll have a pretty nice warchest of minutes in case shit gets crazy (or hot and heavy) at law school. :)

If I could get a cheaper phone plan, I probably would. Definitely need that unlimited data though...

Is MobileMe worthwhile?

There's a 60 day free trial for MobilMe so I suggest trying it out for yourself - a lot of the negativity you might read online comes from the crappy launch of the service. It seems to have gotten a lot better since then. I just bought it yesterday off Amazon for $59 (that's 40% off - it's always much cheaper on Amazon).

Since I've got several Macs it's worth it to have all my Address Book/iCal/Bookmarks in sync without even doing anything (you don't even have to relaunch or refresh the apps to see the changes). Not sure how it works on the PC, but on the Mac and iPhone it's pretty seamless. And the Find my iPhone feature is really freaking cool.

I tried before after I got the phone and they wouldn't let me. I would love to switch to a lower plan cuz we simply don't use up all the minutes. A lot of the time the minutes are just to each other and that's free mobile to mobile.

Just curious, how does that differ than just trying to set everything up on Google? It seems like it would be similar except free. I was looking into Mobile Me but with 3.0, Google seems to support the aspects I would like out of it.

If you are interested in MobileMe, check out as other have said, the free trial.

When you are ready to make the purchase, check ebay. I purchased a year subscription for $30.

My stuff is too disorganized at the moment to make it worthwhile so that's why I'm asking.

I mostly only use Gmail so I'm not too familiar with the rest of Googles services where I could do an in-depth comparison. But I think there are certain limitations - for example Google Calendar doesn't sync alarm reminders (which I use heavily) and doesn't support to-do's either. Gmail doesn't support push email yet so you won't get new emails instantly. There's a bunch of minor annoyances like that which add up. It's just not as convenient or elegant of a solution IMO.

I am sure you can replicate most MobileMe features for free elsewhere (aside from "Find my iPhone"), but part of the appeal is it's convenience and integration into the OS - you enter your username and password and click a few checkboxes and never have to worry about dealing with things again. You don't have to do any kludgy workarounds or deal with third party apps or anything like that, it just works. I signed up for the MobileMe trial just to check out the "Find my iPhone stuff" and ended up being impressed with the rest of it and purchased it off Amazon a few hours later.

But Dropbox and Google's syncing services are the same way. Dropbox works exactly like an iDisk, and syncing your Google contacts and calendars is automatic forever after adding the account to iTunes.

This doesn't even consider how buggy and pissy MobileMe is still, half a year after it was supposed to be fixed. It's getting better all the time, but it still nags me about Contacts changes that I've spent hours trying to resolve by resyncing or clearing my settings on my three computers. Or you'll log in to the web app and there's just nothing there for no reason.

According to what I'm looking at the 700 minute FamilyTalk plan for 2 iPhone lines is $129.99 and unlimited text is $30 additional. That's $159.99 a month before taxes.

I'm one year into a 2 year contract. Is there any way to lower my monthly minutes without extending the contract? I use my phone for work and got the 1400 minute plan but we've only been using about 900 minutes and have thousands of rollover minutes.

You can change your price plan at any time without affecting your contract at all. Just keep in mind if you do that your rollover mintues get capped at 900 or 450 depending on which plan you choose.

Has anyone else started seeing problems with OS 3.0 installed?

-Podcasts lose their current position on iTunes sync much more frequently than they used to do
-Mail reading is a hell of a lot slower
-When you have a mail message open, exit Mail, and come back after receiving new messages the "X of Y" title at the top is always completely off.

For example:
-Have 20 messages in an email folder
-Open up 2nd item in the folder, title says "2 of 20"
-Exit mail
-Get 2 new e-mails, open Mail back up
-It should say "4 of 22", instead, it'll say something like "7 of 22". If I hit the up-arrow, it'll start skipping over read emails - to the 6th, 5th, the 4th I was just looking at, then the 3rd, and finally the two new emails

wtf? Pretty pathetic if these are truly new bugs introduced and not fixed by the official release next week.
Add one more problem into the mix:

-Music/video/podcast seek is far less reliable than before. When I tap-and-hold the arrows to fast forward or rewind, it takes forever to start up, and is much less usable than it was before.

All these questions about monthly costs are weird, both my friends with iphones pay about a 75 monthly bill, which is way less than the people here.

I guess Ill go to an AT&T store and inquire

My 3G has a problem with iTunes quitting a lot. Podcasts abruptly stop and boot me to the main screen. Doesn't seem tohappen with games or email, just iTunes.

75 is the normal price for voice/data/200 texts. That's what I pay currently.

Can anybody recommend an iPhone repair shop? Should I grab parts from iFixIt and do it myself? Or should I go to the Apple Store and just pony up the cash they are asking for me to get a replacement?

I pay $82 a month and that's with a 23% discount. I have 900 min. and 200txt. It's pretty basic stuff. Also when does the actual 3.0 update drop?

Rogers users, just plugged in my iPhone and it old me there was an update to my carrier settings, asked me to download and install. Probably for the Internet Tethering. It now says "Rogers 4.1" in the settings.

the screen cracked. Only the top corner is partially obscured and the touch screen still works well. Apple said no dice to fixing it but I can pay $200 for a new one. I'd obviously much rather spend that on a 3GS

I hear you can sell broken iPhones such as yours on ebay for like $100. At least then you could even justify getting the 32GB version.

Seems like AppleCare is a good way to go with the iphone...anyone know how long you have after purchasing to decide if you want it? Also, does it go for 2 years after the first year is up or does it just upgrade the first year of the limited warranty and tack another on?

and big thanks to everyone helping out with these incessant questions :D

and now my MMS no worky.

Could be that I'm 37 floors up and I always have trouble with signal up here...

But I'm going to bet on some sort of...problem.

If the screen is cheap on it's own and you're comfortable possibly destroying your iPhone while fixing it, go for it.

If you can't find it on eBay, Amazon has it for $69 pretty much all the time. That's where I got mine, and where I'll re-buy it next year to extend my subscription.

It's a 16GB white 3G. It's going for $300 , maybe a lot more if the new one comes with the packaging. I just don't know how long the prices will hold up and the earliest I can get the 3GS is next month...

...wait.

When we say jailbroken we mean what? Just run QuickPWN on it? Or do you mean has a SIM card from another network in it or something like that?

I don't see why someone running a simple program that's free online makes the phone worth so much more on eBay.

^
Anything SIM related refers to the phone being unlocked.

That takes months of discipline. I'm well over 1k right now. I love it.

Were you referring to me? Anyway, there are some people touting "jailbroken" as a feature but then you get all sorts on the internet. "Unlocked" is more tricky as there is store unlocked if you buy the phone in a country like New Zealand or France and that carries a high price because there are no modifications needed and it won't be changed by any Apple updates you install. Then there is the software unlock which also might raise the price as the newest, store bought, iPhones' basebands can't be downgraded to use yellowsn0w. Mine has the software unlock which is one reason I'd prefer fixing it to getting a new one..

Quick case question, anyone have an opinion on the iskin solo case? Thinking about a different look for my phone.
If you're going for a unique look, you can't go wrong with the "No Case".

You'll probably be the only person you know who does it that way!

I was, but I read your statement wrong.

...you gave me the answer I was looking for, though :lol

What's the lowest non-old person minute plan for non-family plan. I currently have a family plan, but plan on nuking the other 2 lines and going solo. 450 is the lowest I've seen, which is probably fine, and it has rollover. Is there anything lower that still has rollover?
