What's the lowest non-old person minute plan for non-family plan. I currently have a family plan, but plan on nuking the other 2 lines and going solo. 450 is the lowest I've seen, which is probably fine, and it has rollover. Is there anything lower that still has rollover?

Obviously it depends on your usage, but I use the 450 plan, and make many of my long distance, longer conversation calls on nights and weekends. I've been with AT&T for nearly 2 years, joined when the first iPhone dropped, and I have like 2500 roll over minutes.

I would love to have a 200 minute plan for less because I may use my phone often but I don't actually talk on the phone long, I have conversations through text, aol or in person. But knowing AT&T, it probably wouldn't even be a big difference in price from their 450 plan so I guess what I really want is lower prices all around :D

iPhone on Friday!

What's the best way to go about getting a 3GS without an AT&T account and about how much would one cost? I am looking to get a 3GS to replace my iPod Touch but I don't want a AT&T contract.
Anyone? Is ebay our only option?

Pretty sure the costs are around $700, and that getting one unlocked direct from Apple / ATT is not going to happen, so you would need to wait till it is unlocked by a third party, then find one for sale on ebay or somesuch.

I thought roll over minutes expired after a month.

For example:
Month 1 ->use 350/450mins, earn 100 RO mins
Month 2 ->use 450/450mins, previous month's RO mins get expired

So you would only have the RO minutes earned from the previous month to use.
I get a few RO minutes each month since I use most of my 500 mins each month.

Rollover minutes expire after a year.

I see. Well, I don't think a jailbreak/unlock solution is too far off for the 3GS 3.0, considering the firmware has been out there for quite some time and the Dev team probably has already played with it extensively. Also, $700 seems to be a fair price, all things considered.

If you guys don't mind me asking.....what are your monthly bills on average? Trying to get a feel on the monthly after tax and things.

A little over $100 with the basic 450 minute plan, data plan, and unlimited texts.

I've got about 3000 built up over the last year, have a 1400 minute plan cause I have 3 lines.

the two main offenders of minute usage (about 1100 minutes' worth) will be off my plan in January.

I'll probably drop down to 450, and go from there.

450 (39.99) + Unlimited Data (30) + Unlimited Messaging (20)

Not terrible, considering how much I use my phone.

90 bucks... am I missing anything? (Yeah I know, Taxes/Fees/etc)

Only thing is, "unlimited" night/weekend minutes is actually 5000 minutes. I dunno how I feel about that. I'll have to look at my usage.

Seems like AppleCare is a good way to go with the iphone...anyone know how long you have after purchasing to decide if you want it? Also, does it go for 2 years after the first year is up or does it just upgrade the first year of the limited warranty and tack another on?

and big thanks to everyone helping out with these incessant questions :D

If it's like Applecare for anything else (notebooks, etc) it can be bought any time in the first year, and extends your coverage to 3 years (so it adds 2).

It depends. It took them 5 months to get an unlock on 2.0 and even then it's been limited to one baseband because Apple can change that independently of the firmware. From what I've heard it's uncertain if they'll even be able to get phones using yellowsn0w to work on 3.0. :( Well we'll find out this weekend. Best bet on an unlocked 3GS is to import or buy a sim card hack like the Gevey.

Does iPhone's autocorrect ever learn? After all this time it still changes fuck to duck.

My phone knows what NeoGAF and Boofidy and Boof-face and Boofer are, so I'm assuming it's at least adding things to it's dictionary when I dismiss their recommendations.

Fuck may just be a word they have programed in to never learn.

nah, it can write fuck.

just reject the duck suggestion 3 times by clicking on the suggestion to ignore it. should be learned by then.

damn, I should get it for my macbook as well in that case.

More questions just because I can...

I'm looking around and I don't see a way of checking minute usage for the past few months, broken down into regular and Night/Weekend minutes.

Closest thing I could find was the bill minutes, but it didn't make any sense...

Fake edit: Nevermind, I think I found it.

This doesn't completely help, except to tell me that even if these were all regular minutes (it's combined in this chart), I'd be just fine with 450 minutes.

I'm not sure, but if you go the ebay route, bing.com always has a cashback option for the site. The percentage varies, right now it's at 8%, but last year around christmas time, it got pretty high. I think it was up to 10% not a few weeks ago, so it might go back up soon.

click this until cashback comes up:
http://www.bing.com/search?q=iphone&go=&form=QBLH

(or just search for iphone until the ebay link with cashback comes up)

On a related question can you edit "learned" words? I impulsively hit the x on suggestions sometimes so it has learned some misspelled words.

you can go to the "reset" area in preferences and clear ALL learned words in the keyboard dictionary but you can't edit one by one. sorry.

They're shipping.

iPhone 3G S pre-orders start shipping, reservations estimated in the hundreds of thousands
apple-ship-notify-1.jpg

We've got a number of tips this morning about lucky iPhone 3G S pre-orderers getting shipment notifications from Apple. Naturally, with a high profile launch like this we're guessing Apple has done all it can to ensure shipments won't slip through earlier than the June 19th launch date, but hopefully at least few folks will get lucky -- and at least they've got one of the only guarantees of a launch day phone going. In other news, an anonymous Apple Store employee has done some homework and tallied up average reservation numbers at other US stores -- he estimates about 800 people on average are on the reservation list per Apple Store (ranging from a couple hundred to well over a thousand), which amounts to about 200,000 reservations as of now, a number he believes could double before launch. There's no way to back that number up, but it sounds fairly rational. Finally, the iPhone 3G S firmware download link has made its way into the wild. Sure, it doesn't do you any good if you don't have an iPhone 3G S, but we thought you just might want to know all the same.

My status is still "Prepared for shipment" but I live in NY, so they're probably sending them out based on how far you are to allow a June 19th arrival.

Nope, mine isn't updated yet either. I ordered the morning after the Keynote.

same

People think its based on how far you are from the factory? I'm in illinois. I thought they shipped from texas last time i had to send something away. Or i could be making that up.

anyone have any experience with something similar? trying to find a cheap alarm clock dock

Have orders from AT&T themselves begun changing their status yet?

mine hasn't. Looking at their status update list, it seems like it'll either be "in progress" (as they have been from the second we ordered) or "shipped." So there's no way to tell if they're in the process of preparing or packaging them.

Kk. Macrumors says some AT&T orders are still "In Progress" but have tracking numbers assigned to them.

I was just thinking, I could theoretically buy the new iPhone and my wife would never know since it looks identical to the 3G. I mean I'd never be able to show her the video camera or else I'd have to lie and say I got it through jailbreaking. :lol

Just preordered my iphone through best buy :( The lowest plan they have is the 700 mins family plan. Can i call ATT and switch to the 550 family plan?

This sounds like a wonderful idea. Can't wait or the divorce-age thread.

You know your wife could find out, switch the sim cards and make u believe u have a 3GS when she actually has it. :D

seriously.

it's a funny thought but no one in their right mind should actually do this. :lol

If your wife is going to divorce you over a phone/gadget - and there's not a massive problem with too carried away buying things - then maybe it's for the best.

If he makes the money and everything is hunky dory on the debt side of things, I don't see why he shouldn't be able to buy the phone and tell his wife he decided to do something nice for himself.

On Topic: Placed my order thru the Apple Store and received the "shipped" notice this morning around 6 PST. Yeeeeeee!

It was only a joke, although my wife would be fine if I bought one. I'm sticking with my original stance though, the 3Gs isn't a big enough upgrade from the 3G to warrant a switch. I'm waiting for next year's model, hopefully new screen technology, way better battery and *HOPE* support for 4G cell network that Rogers introduces next year.

When did you order yours? I ordered mine early morning on the 9th and it still says "In Progress". :(

word on the street is, they have it ready but are waiting for the 3.0 to be released to public

Yeah they had the betas jailbroken, I don't think the final version would be so different that they couldn't get a jailbreak out on the same day 3.0 is released. They've had the GM to work with all week after all.

How much does having Push on multiple accounts slow down your iPhone?

I have noticed if I turn push off my phone (16gb 3g) instantly becomes more responsive. Anyone else notice this phenomenon and has it improved or been fixed under 3.0?

I have never enabled push because well I don't get important enough emails for them to be rushed to me. Having it check every hour seems to be quick enough. I didn't want to risk the battery life of having push enabled. I however have been waiting for push with AIM and other programs, but hesitant to enable it.

I use the phone for work and I am on the road all the time so I always have push on. Plus it really doesn't kill the battery on my phone. I have gotten 6+ hours of usage at edge speeds. What kills my battery are any intensive games and 3G.
