An update on the jailbreak situation...

Update 2 (Thursday morning):

* We have two issues that we’ve been trying to resolve:

1. There are new 3.0 complications with YouTube.app if you’re on a hacktivated (unofficially activated) device
2. There’s a bug in Apple’s new version of asr that our custom IPSW’s are tickling and causing crashes on, on some devices. (For the nerdy or curious among us, the details of that bug were tweeted by planetbeing a month ago.)

* As of Thursday morning we now have a workaround for #2. For #1, we’ll try our best to get it fixed but we may end up releasing a preliminary jailbreak in which YouTube doesn’t work for hacktivated devices, and then follow that up with a more complete jailbreak when we can.

So, as someone who doesnt really want to wade through this thread for answers to questions I'm not even sure I have, I'd like to get an idea of my situation.

As a Blackberry owner with AT&T, I'd like to walk in and get myself a 3GS tommorrow. I'm a little over 6 months into my contract with upgrade eligibility in August. I Work for the Government so I'm assuming their discount (15%) applies.

I would assume I stand to have to pay full price for the phone, sign a new 2 year contract, and with the $69 plan, 1500 a month texting and my government discount I'm looking at a $75 a month phonebill?

Or are their other offers/details I'm missing?

Re-read the press release, accelerated upgrade eligibility was only available to early iPhone 3G adopters (whereas all EDGE owners are eligible). I don't believe it applies to owners of other handsets.

We’re now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

Full price for the 32GB is, what $699. You'd be eligible for 'early upgrade' pricing, which is only $499, which, hell, is what I paid for my 8GB OG iPhone.

:lol, no. It means you ARE immediately eligible. Anyone whose eligibility date is through September 2009 was announced today to also be eligible on Friday (and presumably thereafter) for the 3G S.

No, I'm pretty sure I'm not immediately eligable...

"- $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) for all new AT&T customers and existing AT&T customers who have fulfilled their previous agreement. In addition, AT&T yesterday extended this pricing to iPhone 3G customers who will be eligible for a full upgrade in July, August, or September 2009.

- $399 (16GB) and $499 (32GB) for existing AT&T customers who have not yet fulfilled their existing agreement but would like an early upgrade to iPhone 3G S. This early upgrade option is exclusively available for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S.

My contract ends on August 18th, but I don't have an iPhone 3G-I have a BlackJack 2. Please reply proving me wrong. =/

edit: Also something to note: I'm nearly years into my freaking contract.

Is there a way in Safari to NOT refresh the page when switching tabs?

I don't think so. In my experience it all depends on the page you're viewing. If it has a lot of graphics it will almost always refresh. If you flip between two pages that are mostly text then it usually won't. I think it just depends on the memory usage.

...random thought:

Where does the iPhone go from here? What functionality would they put into a supposed 4G model that we could get next year?

- Flash support
- Front facing camera for video chat
- Higher capacity
- 4G support

For me the biggest announcement would be: No more ATT! Verizon World Phone model with GSM/CDMA support!

Oni Jazar said:

It usually does that for me when I've gone a long time without restarting the phone or when I have a lot (5+) of tabs open. But if I restarted that day at some point and have <5 tabs open, it usually doesn't... that's my experience anyway.

so has anyone tried tethering yet? i got through the page asking that i should contact my provider by downloading a profile and the tethering is on and connected via usb but i dont even know how to turn it on through the comp or anything. help please.

That's stupid, isn't it just another device where you listen to your own subscription? I mean if you already subscribe to Sirius and get Stern why wouldn't it be received by this app? Total fail.

Yes i'm on Rogers in Canada and tethering works. There was a carrier update that I needed to apply the other day.

It'll work either way, either you have internet on wifi or 3G from your phone, plug into the computer, the computer should recognize a new network adapter. Unplug your computer from the internet then try plugging in your iPhone and turn on the tethering. That's all I had to do, my laptop recognized it, set it up and I was surfing the web through the phone as if nothing had changed.

hmm seems like my computer isnt recognizing it as a network adapter then, ill try it on another comp and see how it works out. thanks.

Try bluetooth if that doesn't work. You'll have to setup and enter a passcode I think but it should work if you have bluetooth on your laptop.

Engadget comments are the worst place on the Internet. The absolute worst.

"Man you guys are such shills for Apple, stop posting about Apple!" but they keep coming back to the site just to pollute the comments section. Add to this that Engadget actually provides an Apple-free version of their site and RSS feed for those people, and they don't utilize it.

WTH!!!! There is an Apple-free version of their website? WOW just WOW. That's like 1up having a nintendo-free version of the website, its just so stupid. I cannot believe the amount of hate for Apple has to call for an Apple-free version of Engadget. Unbelievable.

I'm pretty sure it's not an Apple free Engadget, it's just a tag thing you can do to the URL to exempt anything tagged Apple. They tell people to do that if they complain. Just like how you can load only certain tags, those aren't officially "LG only" or "Sony only" versions of Engadget by Engadget, just some tag play in the url to only see those stories.

Well, to be honest if I don't have a Nintendo system than I don't want to be flooded with Nintendo news. This is especially applicable if, say you are a Mac owner and PC news just doesn't apply to you.

Open minded? Definitely Not. Practical? Yea, I think so.

That said, I'm a PC guy and if I had been subscribing to PC ONLY websites I'd be in the dark and not be interested in an iPhone at all.

Oh jesus, $500, I was not expectig to pay that, I need to read shit more -_-

Where are the Push Notification settings in 3.0? I don't see them. I remember seeing a screenshot online showing how you could activate/deactivate push notifications and even control which kinds you would allow (sounds, text, badges).

Anyone else's AT&T order status update? Mine went from showing multiple items (iphone, SIM card, etc.) to now showing:

According to this video:

...it should be at the top level menu under Settings. But it's not :D

Where is this fabled ESPN with push?

I don't see it either. When I search ESPN I only see ScoreCenter and their couple of games. I imagine the alert app will be paid... but I don't see it anywhere. A link to the actual Alerts app would be helpful.

I pre-ordered mine from an AT&T store in person last Thursday (11th) and my status page had originally listed both "Apple IPN 16GB S 3G" and "FREIGHT" as items that were "In Progress". Then a few days later the "FREIGHT" item vanished, leaving only the phone listed. Now, it has been shipped.

I see, pretty dumb if you ask me. I read engadget for the last gadget news doesn't matter what company or brand it comes from. Too bad I cannot afford to buy most of the stuff there.

I'm praying Friday goes smoothly when I get my iphone.

So AT&T says the upgrade eligibility system has been updated, but it's still telling me I'm not eligible and won't be until 12/12/09 -- which doesn't make any sense considering I got both the OG and the 3G phones on their launch days. With the update I should be eligible now.

So is anybody else seeing poor wi-fi reception on their iPhone since upgrading to 3.0? I don't seem to have any major problems at home or at my girlfriend's place, but I'm pretty near the router in those situations. At work though, my wi-fi connection is basically useless. I get next to no signal or can't see the network at all, and when I connect I am frequently dropped. I used to get a fine signal on my Original iPhone from my desk. In fact, my MacBook gets a strong signal from the exact same location.

I'm thinking Apple throttled back the power to the wi-fi radio to conserve battery life (hence the 3GS going from 6 to 9hrs battery life estimate under wi-fi). If so, it's fucked iPhone OG owners hard because I get basically no signal at my office now.

No you shouldn't. You are only eligible for the new price if you can upgrade in June, July, August, or September AND you pay over $99 a month.

Perhaps a dumb question, but how will you be able to tell if AT&T has flipped on MMS? Does a new icon appear or something?

You'll have to download and install new carrier settings through iTunes.

Yes, my wifi signal strength is much lower at home.

Nice. I ordered mine Saturday at 9am EST, and mine remains in "FREIGHT". I presume mine won't get shipped until friday or saturday.

If the iPhone 3G was available on 7/11/08 and you had to sign a new 2-year contract at purchase, How is it that I have a 12/12/09 eligibility date where as other iPhone 3G first day owners have a July, August or September eligibility????

Because they calculate your eligibility based on the number of $/month they squeeze out of you.

Your bill is probably $80 or so? Well, if you're over $99 a month, then you're going to be upgrade eligible even sooner than december, and probably fall inside this window.

Mulitasking and background apps would be top priority for me. The value of location-specific apps really takes off if you can have those run in the background and alert you of location-specific information w/o having to specifically take phone out of your pocket to check.

Granted, that could drain battery life significantly so...better battery tech too.
