Pretty much hate AT&T right now. After about 5 reps, 3 different answers and a bunch of hold time my account is thoroughly fucked up from a botched phone purchase in November, which is now preventing my upgrade from my 3G that I waited overnight to get - to the new 3GS.

Whatever. Fuck AT&T.

lol

I was just told from someone else I AM eligible. I know Apple won't know but I'm going to go to an Apple store for comfort on my lunch break. =P

There is another topic in OT asking about Bluetooth headphones. Does that mean that with 3.0, I can listen to music with the PS3 BT Headset AND be able to use it for making calls?
No, because the PS3 Bluetooth Headset isn't stereo.

You need a Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) headset in order to listen to your music over BT.

I am having some issues getting mine as well. Signed up on the 15th but I apparently have a flag to confirm it's me first on my credit report (never experienced this before but oh well, not necessarily a bad thing) -- they didn't get in touch with me so I called yesterday morning and after about 30 minutes was able to get my approval taken care of. Premier website status updater still said the same thing so I called back to confirm and they said yes, it's fine it just won't update until they finally ship it.

He said that'd take like a day so hopefully I find out today that it's shipped or at least shipping...

Because they calculate your eligibility based on the number of $/month they squeeze out of you.

Your bill is probably $80 or so? Well, if you're over $99 a month, then you're going to be upgrade eligible even sooner than december, and probably fall inside this window.

since the first 3G bill...it always $100+!!!

What, I thought it had to be 18 out of your 24 months.

They told me May or June next year is when I can upgrade and my bill is well over $100 a month.

Sorry, "bill" I meant per-line average price.

And there's a huge amount of misinformation out there, so I really don't even know that I'm right. I just wouldn't trust anyone on a phone or in a store.

So if I'm 8 days out of being included in the September upgrade window (October 8th for me)...do you think I could throw some shit and knock over some accessory racks to get upgraded at the $299 price point?

...I mean it's EIGHT DAYS!

Chorazin said:
No you shouldn't. You are only eligible for the new price if you can upgrade in June, July, August, or September AND you pay over $99 a month.

I don't think I realized that last point. So I'm not eligible after all, but that's OK -- not a terribly big deal. :) Still gonna get the 3GS anyway.

You're right, AT&T is a really benevolent company after all. I bet they'll even give you a hug for your worries.

You think I'd have better luck at haggling at an AT&T store or an Apple store?

I'm inclined to say Apple store, but I'm also wondering if their hands are tied on the issue since they aren't the source of the subsidy.

Uhg. My shipment has apparently hit a snag-

THE PACKAGE IS BEING HELD FOR FUTURE DELIVERY. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON THE DATE REQUESTED

It was supposed to be here in California today :(

Definitely don't bother trying at an Apple store. This is AT&T's policy and any deviation from it will have to go through them. In short, Apple will abdicate immediately whereas AT&T would actually have to answer for the eight day denial.

Offer AT&T to prorate the discount for the eight day gap, or tell them you'll come back in 8 days. Throw so much logic at them that the conversation keeps rolling. This policy is already rife with logical fallacies and apparent contradictions, afterall.

They're holding all deliveries until tomorrow. Apple doesn't want you getting yours early.

Mine is being shipped FedEx which sucks since I get several UPS packages a week and my delivery guy knows to just leave stuff at the door. I'm probably going to have to visit the FedEx hub tomorrow.

Might not really matter.

AT&T has told me they are absolutely requiring signatures on each package.

Edit: call FedEx tonight with your tracking # to make sure they don't put it out for delivery. Otherwise it may not be back at the hub when you go.

lol welcome to Tuesday!!!

Yeah, a lot of us were expecting our iPhones in by the 17th (because that's when UPS said it will be delivered on), but the same thing happened to us.
We're all getting it tomorrow. :D

You can pre-sign for your package. Theres a link in the shipment email. You just print out a form, sign it, and leave it on your door.

How do you turn that off? I went to the settings and saw nothing there.

Also, does 3.0 unlock stereo bluetooth on the 3g or is it 3gs only?

I'm quickly, quickly losing faith. Still no email from AT&T. Still no tracking number. Barring the thing being really close and when it finally does update with a tracking number it'll be almost here, or some crazy overnight delivery... :'(

If you have an app that uses notifications, there is a notifications settings area in the top level settings menu.

edit: Stereo bluetooth is supported by 3g, 3gs, and ipod touch 2g

The AT&T store that I pre-ordered from still doesn't have the shipment of phones yet. And I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow? I have a feeling this whole experience is going to be a goat rodeo.

Should I be worried?

All iPhones are being shipped overnight by AT&T. Unlike Apple, who starts sharing tracking information from the distribution facility overseas, AT&T probably will ship them normal overnight domestically. Therefore it would be odd to have a tracking number this early.

As someone who's constantly amazed that "Yes, overnight means over the night" with how many things I ship for business, really. It'll be okay.

Just got an e-mail that my phone has arrived at my AT&T store and is ready for pickup tomorrow morning.

So were all Apple preorders for in-store pickup/activation? Or was there an option to have it shipped to you directly?

Thanks, I didn't see that.

I called FedEx and I'm bummed that they can't just hold the package at the hub since I work nearby it, but they have to attempt delivery once the rep said. This is almost as good though.

FUUUUUUUU

Just watched the video on the iphone page @ apple.com and didn't realize just how snappy things are now with 3GS...mother fucker...

I just may have to argue with some ATT reps to get me this puppy at a decent price!

While the 3GS is snappier, it would probably be better to look at some comparison review videos floating around on the web to get a better feel for it. I wasn't sure I could trust the guided tour video as an indicator of "real life" speeds.

Nevertheless, it's much faster.

edit: I've also heard from people who work at AT&T that you'll have your work cut out for you to get them to flex on their policies.

So MMS for AT&T is officially set for sometime mid-July, not "end of summer". Also, tethering support is coming at the end of July...for $55/month extra :lol

Did you expect tethering to be free? There isn't a carrier out there that will just let you use your cellphone as an access point for free. Though I'll admit I don't know how that price compares to the other carriers' tethering plans. Is that why you're laughing at it?

Well that's pretty false.

Isn't the current tethering fee for most AT&T devices something like $30 a month? That's quite the upcharge for iPhone users.

Oh no, I didn't expect tethering to be free (in fact I wasn't even planning on using tethering; never have, probably never will), but I'm fairly sure $55 + your current bill is pretty absurd. That would put iPhone 3GS users with 200 texts and a fairly low minutes plan over $130/month after taxes and what not.

edit: for example, Blackberry data plans are $45, but adding tethering is only $15 extra. I don't understand why 3G users have to pay $30 for a data plan and then another $55 for tethering support.

It really is that good, too. Gizmodo and Engadget's videos both show that the 3GS loads up games pretty much 50%+ faster, Safari is faster by just about 50%, everything truly seems faster.

I bought the 3.0 upgrade for my 2nd Gen Touch last night and much to my surprise, when I plugged in my half broken 1st gen Touch, iTunes prompted me to download the new version.....for free!

To be honest, I was going to try to force upgrade my old one with the new version but I got a firmware incompatibility error. I guess the upgrade is tied to the iTunes account, not the device.

Just watched both of those videos and the one thing that they didn't show that the apple.com video does show is quickly switching between apps.

My most common performance scenario is likely going to be jumping into Safari, answering a text message (aka jumping into Messages), jumping back into Safari, jumping into YouTube through a link, jumping out of YT to Safari...etc etc.

Those app jumps right now don't take forever, but they certainly aren't anywhere as quick as these videos suggest. I don't have a whole lot of intensely graphical games, however it's nice to see those getting a nice boost as well.

Yeah, I got that line from them too once.

I replied, "Who does that policy protect? Someone could be sitting at my house and sign without ID, or I could come in and have to show ID for you to even walk over and grab it."

Then they held it for me, because they know that nobody really asks for ID on signature even though their own terms probably stipulate they need to.

If tethering is just allowing the PC to use the 3g connection, why would iPhone tethering rates be higher than those of other phones? What is the added value of iPhone tethering vs. tethering with another phone?

Is At&t DARING folks to jailbreak their phones?

All iTunes Store purchases can be synced to 5 devices per library, including the iPod Touch firmware. (which actually isn't digitally signed as bought by you, so I'm sure you could manually install it to as many as you want).

But yeah, you buy an app, you can have it on 5 libraries, each with 5 different devices syncing, for a presumed theoretical max of 25 installations of an app per license purchased.

As a developer, I don't know how much I love that.

Edit: Oh, and the error you saw is because the two touch models have different firmware builds.

Because AT&T is afraid that iphone users are more apt to use tethering than other users, which would further expose how shoddy AT&T's network is. They're doing it to save their asses, plain and simple.

The only way to make it non-obvious that you're using your phone as an access point is to do true subnetting, which is what PDANet (jailbreak) does.

I highly doubt that the Tethering implementation Apple is rolling out was built to mask which bytes are coming over via tether, in fact that information is almost certainly explicit. Therefore, everyone tethering right now could probably be bitch slapped with a bill or have data disabled by AT&T at any time.

Is there a way for a developer to put in code preventing that? I ask because my wife bought Oregon Trail on her iPhone, but I cannot, for the life of me, get it to sync to my phone. I haven't had that issue with any other app that she's gotten, either before or after. I thought that the Oregon Trail devs had put in some sort of restriction.

Not an official avenue to do this to my knowledge. It won't even install to your phone?

What error do you get?

If you can get it to install and it crashes on boot, then it could be doing something to phone home and/or compare your device's ID against the first one the app used, or a few other hacky things, but that would definitely cause them more grief than it would bring in income.

Juice said:

Right, it says that the application cannot be installed to my phone. As far as I can remember, it does reference some sort of issue, I think it was my login. I log in to iTunes store as my wife and it still won't install. I'll try it when I get home and let you know the exact error message, but it gives the impression that I cannot install it to my phone because I was not the one who bought it. Which is weird, because no other app does that. I always thought it was some sort of flag that the devs put in there that other devs don't bother with.
