iPhone - Official Thread

I'm in the US. Who is a good cell phone provider that would allow me to bring my own phone and has a nice selection of plans to choose and pick from where I can choose how much of each part of the pie I want? I mean, I don't need unlimited talk or text. I get 150 units a month, and I use maybe 24 at most. Maybe 50 to an hour and a half (Which would be 120 minutes) and right now my rollover minutes are up to 1600. What would really get me would be data. If I could get a reasonable plan for data that didn't cost out the wazoo but was still reasonable enough for whatever usage I would put on it. (I never had a device on the go that could do internet. So I don't know how much I would actually use. But I would want to be able to use certain sites when I'm in an area that doesn't have wifi so I could still keep in contact back and forth.)

I have my iPhone 2G running on T-Mobile. I pay $65 a month, it includes unlimited minutes, 400 txt messages, and unlimited data. I was a bit skeptical at first due to all the bad rep T-mobile gets, but in the 5 months I've been using them I've only had 2 dropped calls that I remember.

You just choose your voice plan, and add the $19.99 data plan and you're set.
 
Liu, awesome, thanks. Yeah, Listen Up is one of those weeklies that I want to download on the way home. Same thing with BS Report, pain in the ass when they went over cap.

Well, to start off; your iPhone is locked. Unless you run a hack on it to unlock the phone, it will only run on AT&T (provided your friend bought the phone in the USA.)

At the end of the day, your iPhone is a GSM phone, so Net10 can't stop you from using an unlocked iPhone. But it doesn't look like they do data (or at least 3G data), so that is unfortunate. Your only options are Tmobile/AT&T, I'd guess. I think Tmobile will probably have better month-to-month schemes, but again it's based on getting the phone unlocked first. Go to stores for both of them; ask about month-to-month plans and whether you can get data on a month-to-month. Don't even bring up the iPhone; just say you have a smartphone from an old plan, since all you're buying is a SIM card.

Unless AT&T has some bizarre way to tell you're using an iPhone, that's all it should take. Tmobile doesn't sell the phone but obviously will support anyone who wants to use one on their network.

Well he likely removed his sim and put it in his new phone. If he did the "Secure wipe" function on the iphone, then the phone is bricked and you would either need to hack it or get it reactivated with a plan at an AT&T store, but if he didn't then you should be able to turn on the phone immediately and run it in airplane mode...

Unfortunately I bet Sprint is still the best plan provider of the big 3 for data...but they are physically incompatible with the iPhone (CDMA instead of GSM).

Well, that part is easy to calculate out; just go to ATT/Tmobile websites and check out their plan rates online. That should give you a good idea of the minimum cost involved. But yeah, usually you sign a contract with a minimum dollar fee, and if you decide to break it there is a penalty (usually not nearly as bad as paying the rest of the contract).

Looking there myself, looks like Tmobile starts at $40/month for data plans and ATT starts at $30, both for unlimited (wild world compared to Canada :lol ) It might be possible to do month-to-month on that stuff but I'd guess they'd want a 1 year contract min. But it's worth it to go ask. You're still at an advantage by not buying a phone from them.
 
Not sure if anyone else has already mentioned this, and it's of course obvious, but I can confirm that the volume controls on the Apple in ear headphones work on the 3GS.

I haven't even looked at the stock phones that came with it, but I would assume they have volume control as well.

That's actually really great quality. I see you learned your finger tip from experience. I only did a test video and watched it on the iPhone but great to know the videos actually do look great off of the iPhone.
 
I've had my iPhone 3GS for two days now and I'm loving it incredibly so far. I love that I can easily take a photo (or video!) of anything and within seconds twitter it or facebook it or email it. I'm sure many devices have this sort of functionality, but it's new to me and the iPhone makes it so incredibly easy.

Are you sure? I just tried a larger podcast and I couldn't.

CrazyMoogle, you can stream podcasts even if they're over 10MB. Just click the name of the podcast instead of the FREE / DOWNLOAD button. That's what I do for Listen Up on the way home every Friday.

In any case, how'd you work out the visa/itunes/amazon song sponsoring? Is that all Google's introspection of your video or what??

There's not a JavaScript API hook for using the camera from a webapp.

I actually have this feature proven out for MobileGAF, but it needs a little more time in the oven before it'll be ready. Might not make 1.0

Im' actually annoyed with this; half the time when I click to download a podcast, my fingers click on the name accidentally, and it starts streaming. :lol

I could be mistaken, but really, I think I would've noticed the prompt to connect to a wifi network as I was stopped at the red light. :lol

I will be getting the 3GS within the next week or 2. This thread is only making me want one quicker. The video quality and pictures look pretty damn good for a cell phone.
 
Oh, Apple. What pieces of shit.

Just got off the phone, and three things suck.

Argh #1

I must *restore* my iPhone 3G S, because I unplugged it while it wasn't activating successfully. It was just sitting there with the alert "this may take some time" on the phone, and absolutely no visual accompaniment on iTunes. Neither told me not to disconnect the phone, to the best of my recollection.

Argh #2

Because I have to keep it plugged in to activate, I have to be prepared to take my iPhone EDGE to work tomorrow. While at work, my 3G S at home will probably activate and my iPhone EDGE will stop working. This is absolutely ridiculous that I have to plan my workday and meetings around the fact that my phone might self destruct.

Argh #3

Oh, and because I bought it from AT&T, they're dubious as to whether I qualify for the $30 credit.

Dumb question - don't you have to move your sim card into the new iPhone for it to activate and work?

No. iPhone 3G S ships with an embedded SIM.

Also: Ack! Finally got someone competent & helpful from AT&T on the line and they were awesome, but in progres was disconnected!!! Argh :(

? The 3GS still has a SIM tray. Rogers support had indicated that I could just swap in my 3G SIM rather than use the SIM it comes with, possibly...

The SIM in the 3G S is a 3G SIM, my SIM in my iPhone EDGE is apparently different.

Also, at this point my iPhone EDGE and SIM have been deactivated (this is why I was disconnected). So I'm stuck. AT&T says the new SIM/IMEI have been activated on my 3G S, however it still reports "waiting to be activated."

Edit: Oh, which means I now have ZERO working iPhones. Pretty awesome.

Ah, I didn't know something was different. Back at 3G purchase I was told I could "probably" use my pre-3G SIM so long as it was new enough but we decided to use the iPhone SIM just in case since all of the activation happened in-store.
 
Hey guys. I just picked up my 32GB 3G-S from Rogers. I now have a few people who want to buy my 3G 16GB, but they all want to run it on Fido. I've upgraded it to 3.0 already, but it isn't jailbroken yet. Now, I know ultrasnow will be released soon enough so I'll be able to unlock 3.0, but these people apparently can't wait that long. Is there ANY way for me to revert to an early version like 2.2.1 so I can then use yellowsnow to unlock it for them? I've found ways using google, but it seems that the baseband won't revert meaning yellowsnow wouldn't work for me I'm guessing. Any ideas? Am I doomed to lose these potential buyers while waiting for ultrasnow?

It's not like you won't have just as many people eager to buy it in a couple of weeks, and a phone that's both 3.0 and unlocked will be an even hotter commodity.
 
Alright, I'm all set up now thanks to AT&T manually OTA activating my phone. Still took an extra 30 minutes to figure out I had to REBOOT the phone.

Yeah, lots of undocumented steps. Same thing with me today; no idea that tethering had such a simple activation step that one would think could just be part of the upgrade process. :lol

Hoping to get my 3GS later this week...
 
Anyone else's GS taking really grainy photos? I think I might have received a bad unit. The quality of photos taken by my GS looks far inferior to what I've seen in this thread and elsewhere on the tubes.

I'm not as convinced as you are that I'll be able to get the same price for it. I hope you're right, though.. Right now I've got 2 serious local offers, 1 for $420 and the other for $450 CDN. Ultrasnow can't come soon enough. Or 3G-S jailbreaking, for that matter! :D I already miss Cydia..
 
So AT&T uses GSM/EDGE network tech. Question: If a new deal with Verizon were announced, would this require a new Verizon version of the iPhone with specific tech capability to run Verizon's network? Or would all current iPhones then be capable of running Verizon (assuming Verizon does not use GSM/EDGE)?

I was thinking to buy the expensive no-contract iPhone for the option to eventually switch to Verizon, hoping/risking this would happen within a year, but if it's not compatible, it's no use.

It'd need new hardware.
 
Yeah, Verizon is CDMA right? They don't use SIM cards and what not so I'd have to assume they'd need to create brand new hardware.
 
Verizon phones are not GSM so the current and older iPhones would not work. This is also why you can't get phones outside of what they sell.
 
As others have said, Verizon's CDMA would require new iPhone hardware. But, 4G is going to be universal across all carriers, which is why I don't think you'll see the iPhone on another carrier until 2011, when 4G is rolled out more fully.

Yeah, this is basically it; sounds like everyone is going HSPA or straight to LTE, so I think the odds of a CDMA iPhone seem kinda low now.
