AT&T Navigator app has just been released. It's free to download but adds a $10 to your monthly bill (just like on other phones).

Is anyone else's Yahoo email messed up since 3.0? I used to get push notifications instantly; now they are sporadic. Sometimes they are a few minutes late, sometimes hour late, sometimes no push at all. What gives? -_-

Why wouldn't you just wait to get the TomTom app which will be a one time 30 dollar charge from a tried and true GPS company?

This app is just another reason to hate AT&T!

That is what I'm waiting for also, though I really doubt it'll be a one time $30 charge.

I'm mostly looking forward to TomTom's because of their car kit solution, seems like a really nice accessory. I just have a bad feeling there's gonna be a sticker shock when the price is revealed.

Agreed, the car kit looks awesome as long as the mount is strong enough to not fall off all the time (as my default TomTom mount did).

Hopefully it truly is $30 and not something like $100.

The download is going to end up being over a gig if you download all those maps to your phone too.

Wouldn't the car kit solution work just fine for what ever navigation app you go with? It's simply a mount and charging station right? No real integration into the app itself.

Sigh, now the phone is backordered. I'm so frustrated with the whole situation.. I know people had said AT&T customer service was awful but this goes beyond bad.

I just don't understand how 3 CSRs could basically lie to me (well 2 really, the 3rd was actually helpful but still ended up being wrong) and I'm the one in the end who is screwed.

When is TomTom out for 3GS?
I don't believe they've given a date just yet, however a summer or holiday release makes sense.

Been hearing about TomTom GPS for iPhone since the 3G launched. I'll believe it when I see it.
They showed off the interface and their cradle accessory at WWDC, so I can only imagine they are fairly far along.

Within the year seems completely reasonable.

...and what a forward thinking company TomTom is. Stand-alone devices will eventually be kicked to the wayside as everyone's phones start coming with GPS functionality within them. They're smart enough to realize that they need to stay relevant through software vs. hardware.

Very surprised Garmin isn't trying to jump in the same space.

Any idea on the cost? I've needed a GPS for a long time and have resisted so far in favour of an iPhone solution.
I've heard a $30 price-point kicked around, but I have no idea where it came from or how realistic it is.

...it feels right?

That sounds reasonable.

Now if google gets its act together with push then next years revision of iPhone looks more and more likely to be the ultimate, amazing kind of portable device I originally envisioned. Not sure what else there really is to do at that point feature-wise, besides a zoom lens for the camera, OLED screen and other improvements for battery life and memory and performance improvements.

Hello everyone, just have a question.

I just purchase a used iphone 3G and have a question. I have sync everything with my itunes and updated to 3.0 I would like to know if I jailbreak and unlock the iphone with the recently release of Ultrasnow what happens to the apps I already have? Am I able to sync after jailbreaking/unlocking and put everything back from my previous sync?

I can't imagine it'd be $30. Map updates don't cost that little, let alone the entire software. I'm sure they make more than $30 profit on each of their navigator devices too, so even if the app was 100% profit they'd be insane to undercut their standalone products so substantially.

I'd love to be wrong, though.

Garmin has made their bed with the NuviPhone. They're morons.

Oh Crap. I have just lost all the notes I had in my Ipod touch when I synced it with a different computer (I wanted to stop syncing things with my desktop as Itunes is so slow on it, and started syncing everything on a mac laptop). I know where the notes are synced on Mac (Mail application), but are they synced anywhere on PC? I know that in the early days of Iphone, notes wouldn't sync on PC at all, but how about now with newest Itunes and Windows Vista?

As a last resort, I can restore some backup from PC, email notes to myself, then resync Touch with laptop, right?

On a bright side, Air Sharing just started working on both 3GS and 3.0 updated Touch. Works all the time now it seems. I think I got it to work by making it quit just as soon as I started it, while it was frozen on that title screen.

I'm interested in these Push IM clients, but I think I'm going to hold out and see Meebo's solution. The AIM app is shitty (and only accesses the AIM/ICQ network) and the BeeJive one is expensive. Meebo will support all the networks (their website already does) and will hopefully undercut BeeJive's price. They said back at the 3.0 OS event in March that they would be ready for 3.0 launch, so I'm hoping that the app is done and is just stuck in certification hell right now.

Navigon is 75€. Special introduction price. will raise to 99€ after 2 weeks.
all europe is covered.

im waiting for a price drop to 50€...

Beejive gave me a coulple of issues at first (had to reinstall) but it seems to be working fine now.

The notifications are fast!

I'm still interested in what Meebo is coming out with if only because the interface they showed was cleaner.

Yeah, it will be $100. Any less is a steal.

Ya Beejive seems to have smoothed out a bit but it's still early though. I hope it doesn't get overloaded again during the prime time IMing hours. What's really missing for me from Beejive and Meebo is Skype support though. Tempted to check out IM+ cuz of that.

Well, you're not paying for hardware at all, just maps, which obviously have a value to them as well, but you can go buy an actual dedicated Tom-Tom device for not a lot more than $100. I think it's suicide to charge $100.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Tom Tom map updates themselves are about $90ish bucks!

I'm hoping for lower, but $99 wouldn't surprise me.
I'd also pay for it.

Yes, my Yahoo mail notification has been shit since the new update last week. It reminds me of how bad it was when I first picked up my 3G a year ago. I assume it will slowly improve just like it did last summer. I just don't understand what the problem is, what could have changed between 2.2 and 3.0?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tom Tom try out the 99 dollar price but then lower it to around half that when sales tank.

very, very few apps over 20 bucks do well. i think only omnifocus and jaadu vnc are 20 dollar apps that always stay in the top 50 apps list.

on my end, i would pay 100 for full NA maps assuming the app actually works as well (or better) than a dedicated GPS device.

But when you can get a dedicated unit for $110, does it really make sense to spend $100 on an iPhone App, and then add a cradle and so on?

It does if you want everything in one unit and if the app has similar functionality to a standalone GPS.

xabre said:

I disagree from a functionality standpoint, but everyone has their own approach I suppose. I'd prefer the dedicated GPS hardware for the same money. It'll likely be faster, more accurate, and it won't get interrupted by phone calls and the like.

Now on the other hand, if the iPhone app is inexpensive and works good, I'd go that route instead to save some cash.

Like I said, different approaches I suppose.

For comparison, a few other turn by turn apps.

XRoads is $50 for USA, or $25 for just East or West.
MobileMaps is $65 for Australia, $75 for Asia.

Hard to imagine a big name like Tom Tom being cheaper, but here's to hoping.

I'd pay $50, maybe $65. After that, I'd rather have a dedicated unit that uses it's own battery, probably gets a better signal and I have the benefit of being able to lend to my family or friends if they go somewhere.

Once a certain price area is exceeded, the benefits of an all in one are shattered in my book.

Garmin already has a mobile version for Blackberry, and it works pretty well from what I've read (I'm waiting to try the trial version when I go on vacation).

Also, Garmin Mobile is a one-time $100 purchase (as low as $80 if you get a sale price) and I would think that a Tom Tom Mobile would be priced about the same (certainly much higher than $30 at least).

$30 is a pipe dream. Even if TomTom could somehow make a profit on that, it would completely cannabalize the sale of its functionally inferior standalone units.

Eh...it's a perk for those who own a platform that is capable of running the software.

It's not like you can run out, get an iPhone for 700 bucks and buy this app. You're going to need a data plan and a contract just to be able to download and support the app in the first place.

Also, I'm sure they will sell a TON more map upgrades on an iPhone than they would on a standalone.

Yeah it's just an OS issue. I wouldn't bother with the genius bar appointment since that dude will probably just tell you the same thing.

This happened last year too btw - there was a ton of annoyances and quirks with the 2.0 update and it took Apple like two or three months (and several updates) to squash all the bugs. Just take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_OS_version_history#2.x to see the type of stuff that was wrong. Major things like the keyboard hanging, apps crashing constantly, syncing was taking hours for some people, shitty 3G reception, etc. While the 3.0 update may have a few quirks it's really stable in comparison to what people went through last year :lol
Nah not gonna cancel my Genius Bar visit..

I've posted this on some busy iPhone forums and no one is confirming they have this issue.. Well a few may.. but its rare.. nothing like that icon issue.. so I need to address this cause it could be hardware for all I know.

One off $30 charge? Off the company that sting you for hundreds of dollars for a new map? Riiight.
