If you have enough money to pay for the iPhone monthly subscription, you have no business buying only an iPhone 3G. If you like *anything* to be lightning fast, you're going to be buying the 3G S.

Screw it, maybe ill get the 3gs, might as well go all out, but im TERRIBLE with upkeeping phones, drop them all the time, on the ground, in water, leave them places, haha.

Does it still use a SIM card? Ill just put my sim in my older phone when heading to the bars or other random places I may lose it.

I seem to be running into a weird issue with AIM and push notifications. I have one PC on at home at all times running Pidgin/AIM, and I also have it so that AIM on my iPhone stays active for at least 6 hours on the phone side. So far a few times I've noticed that friends have messaged me things that appear as push notifications on the phone, but then when I go to the conversation itself on the iPhone app some of these messages aren't there. I can verify they're missing by verifying their presence on my home PC which has duplicates of all inbound messages naturally.

I've noticed it twice, but can't reproduce it when I want to. Sometimes I lock my phone with the AIM app open, or close out the AIM app entirely. Hmmmm.

So how many gafers here use screen shields? I'm not sure about getting one since the new 3GS screen is so much easier to clean. Also I've heard some screen shields don't work with the new 3GS screen?

Yeah I get this. I'll get 5 messages but when I open AIM, I only see the latest one. It's frustrating. I can't trust push notifications yet.

All shields work, you just lose the oil resistance because it doesn't work through the shield obviously.

I wouldn't bother with it.

Does anybody use a screen protector on their phone? I am trying to use the one that came with my iskin solo but i cant get the bubbles out and its really annoying anyone have any tips?

Don't use it. It's pointless.

its one hell of a nice security knowing that it will never get scratched. we all know how scratch resistant the iphone is, but its not perfect.

i have never been left with bubbles under my many many bodyguardz shields. are you spraying a liquid onto the sticky side? use a credit card or some kind of squeege to get as much of the liquid and bubbles out while still wet. dont worry about the small bubbles, they will come out by itself.

Honestly, new iPhones come out every year. It's strange seeing people coat these disposable and temporary things in battle armor.

The only situation I can understand is a woman that throws the phone in her purse with a bunch of other crap.

disposable and temporary? not everyone upgrades every year. whats wrong with wanting to protect an investment? when i sell my iphone i sure as hell want it to look brand new so i can get max dollar. a thin plastic shield is hardly "armor".

Absolutely fucking hilarious!

anyone else having a problem with the batteries on the 3gs? i had like 16% battery when i sat down to watch transformers 2, was dead after the movie ended

wtf.

Battery meters aren't always accurate. Did you ever calibrate it?

mind you it was my second charge, and it didn't seem to last long at all today - i am doing several complete discharges and recharges but it's just odd that the battery tanked so fast even after fairly minimal use

(note: friend bought 3gs, my phone was at 56%, his was at 71%, by the time we got out of the theatre? his was at 60%...) i had a stint of maybe half an hour where i was reading news in there when he was busy - 30 minutes shouldn't make 43% of a battery drain

So for those of you who dealt through getting their 3GS online. I had backordered mine. And I check today and my order went from "Various SIM, Freight, and White 16GB 3GS all in Progress" to "Various SIM shipped with nothing else on the screen"

So what's the usual consensus for that, did everything ship or is just the SIM card getting to my door tomorrow.

Yeah mine's been iffy. Not sure if it's the battery, or the meter, but I can almost watch the % countdown while I'm on the train. Nothing too crazy, some IMs, texts, maybe some GAF web app. Watching it tank hurts.

I assume through AT&T? You'll be fine.

Yeah through AT&T. Good to know I should be fine. It should be here tomorrow then :D Just in time for me to wait in the IMAX line for TF2:D

I'm a little leery of the battery life I'm getting from mine, but it's not been that bad.

Yeah, that is really odd. I have the 3GS and this was my usage so far today:

88%

Usage: 59 minutes
Standby: 15 hours, 19 minutes

I've actually been pleasantly surprised with the battery life. Hours pass and not even 10% is missing for me. Maybe it's because at work I only do light texting and wifi is off, but the battery is great until I start my super long gaming sessions.

Yeah, coming from a 2G I was worried the battery life would be much worse, but it's been surprisingly good. Not as good as the 2G, but certainly good enough.

Attempted to pick up a 3GS today - sold out. Kind of dissapointing, was looking forward to having a new gadget to play around with. I knew that the initial supply would have been gone in a day or two, but I figured almost a week later there would start to be resupply shipments showing up.

Is the 3GS going to be difficult to find for a while now? Particularly the 32gb model? Or did I just have bad luck, and should make the effort to hit a few extra stores?

My battery life is horrific. I turn off 3G and GPS and it still seems worse than my old iPhone. Could be the push notifications, though.

Tried to cancel my online order so I could pick one up in the store but it's uncancellable if you will. Guy claims it's showing up as being processed by the warehouse so maybe it actually will ship soon. Hope it gets here by 7/1!

I ordered from ATT last Tuesday and my shit has still not shipped.

I AM NOT AMUSED.
I ordered last Monday if it makes you feel any better. New customer too...you figure they'd want to make me happy!

I used to have pretty good battery life on my 3G before 3.0. I had 3G off, so I was always doing better than anyone else with 3G on.

Now after 3.0, I have to charge at least once a day maybe twice. I think it's the push - maybe it keeps the wifi on or something (I don't have data). I know when I'm connected it calls some Apple servers.

Im posting this really late so i dont expect an answer soon but i just want some clarifications before i purchase my 3GS.

Im on AT&T's wireless site and chose to upgrade my existing plan with a 3GS, selecting the type of texting plan i wanted and everything. When they ship me my phone, what happens next? When does my old phone simply stop working? After i update the new one on iTunes? My old bill will morph with no hassle?

Im a button away from purchasing it, but i cant seem to escape the fear that buying it at a store would be so much simpler with less chance for mixups, but that is sadly very inconvenient for me right now, especially with such high demand.

Holy fuck the new Apple remote app is fucking awesome. No more do I have to juggle both the iPhone and the shitty shite remote when controlling the ATV. I love how the speed/length of the swipe also affects the motion on the ATV. Works flawlessly and intuitively, and makes the ATV 10X more enjoyable to use. I especially love swiping the photos - I love how they more in real time in accordance to your swipe.

ATV would be a must have if they just beefed up the hardware, codec support, and features a bit. The potential would be through the roof if they played their cards right.

Push
Bluetooth
WiFi
3G

Also, i've noticed that I simply spend more time using my iPhone 3GS compared to my previous iPhone so I think that contributes also :D

Old phone stops working once the new one is activated. it's a pretty quick transition (activate and sync with iTunes). Old bill becomes the new bill (but with some extra tacked on since data plan costs more).

Just buy it online. I bought mine from Apple.com. Mine worked beautifully but I couldn't activate my wife's phone so I drove to the Apple store and they gave me a new one. They have some stock on hand of replacement phones (not packaged like retail, new phones but w/o accessories). They took my wife's original iPhone 3GS, switched it with a working unit that was brand new, activated it at the store just to be safe and then bingo I was on my way.

For those who are curious about the problem with my wife's phone it was basically my number that was tacked on to both 3GS units. Except for some reason my wife's 3GS just would not reset to her number. Guys at Apple were baffled so rather than figure out what was up (after they tried a hardware restore) they just hooked us up.

I love apple :)

I gave my 3GS its first all-day runout today while traveling to LA on business and I must say I was not overly thrilled with the battery life; it didn't seem to be a great improvement. I did use it pretty heavily though (played a lot of Bejeweled at the airport) so maybe that's it. But by the time I got home after a 12-hour round trip the battery was less than 10% and I was expecting better than that.

I turned on the battery life percentage indicator on the home screen so I can more closely monitor it on future trips.

I really wish the 3GS had power use profiles rather than having to manually turn things on and off. This way we could configure our ideal settings for battery conservation or when we want to really unleash its full potential.

Good idea - the Macbook has custom power use profiles, why not the iPhone?

So, so this.

My buddy showed me an android app that did this w/ location awareness. When it got within like 3miles of his work it went totally silent, when he left it turned back on all sounds.

I'd pay for that for sure. even more so if it turned on/off wi-fi at the same time.

This is the direct opposite of my experience. My 3G pre 3.0 had horrible battery life. I'd be charging it during the day at work and overnight at home. Unlike you though, I have 3G on all the time and push, and I have a 3 hour commute that I listen to music on. So, the battery life wasn't really something I was going to complain too much about.

Post 3.0 however, and the battery life is a million times better. I don't have to charge it during the day, and by night time I still have half a battery left which is just insane compared to before. I still charge it overnight just to make sure (I can't survive my commute without music). But yeah, the difference is huge.

it does? do you mean the "battery and adapter" profiles or are there more im missing?

and gj holding onto that 3G until now. the prices should be pretty good.

My battery life is also going down quick (iPhone 3g). I have been using 3.0 for some time now and I didn't notice any changes regarding battery life until I downloaded the Beejive update and started using push notifications. I'm going to run a few tests today I think.

Do you have bluetooth on? now that they added that function to the touch 2g it drinks power nearly as fast as running a 3d app.

I've been really disappointed with the battery life of the 3GS (its my first iPhone). I have Mail fetching every 15 mins, send the occasional text and email, browsed GAF for a bit and played a few games of table tennis, after about 12 hours it just completely died, as in the battery was 0% and I couldn't turn it on.
I hate having to always be worrying about the battery life and my eyes being on it constantly whenever I use the iPhone.
Oh and I have bluetooth, Wifi etc all off (though I keep 3G on).
