i think there was some tool for this in cydia (if your iPhone is jailbroken...).
I don't have any evidence of this, but it's highly likely there'll be a new last.fm app released that can scrobble music from your library when you use it to play them. I say this because the new SDK allows app developers to access the iPhone's music library to play tracks.

Just to check, does the iPhone 3GS has the exact same dimensions as the iPhone 3G? So if I bought a casing that was designed for the iPhone 3G, would it be able to fit on the 3GS?

No change apart from weight.

A friend of mine just put an app on the store and sent me a promo code for it but I can't figure out how to use the promo code. Do I need to be at my computer to use a code because it doesn't look like there's anywhere to use it from the phone.
Before the 17th, you could enter the code directly on the phone in the App store.
But they changed the App Store that day and now you have to enter the code on your computer's iTunes.

As far as I know you can only use the promo codes from the main page, you click redeem on the right.

Any more news on ATT's supposed data plan price drop? I'm eligible for an upgrade in August and I'm heavily leaning towards getting an iPhone, but the required extra $30 a month without texting is still keeping me away.

I never thought I'd use copy and paste this much but Apple got it so right. I'm able to copy a blog post and a funny comment into an email, retaining the whole format of each and send it to my brother in seconds. It's so awesome.

IIRC, AT&T was toying with the idea of offering an alternate plan for $20 a month with limited data usage. But it looks like they've scrapped that for now.

Yeah, they said they're pleased with their prices, that's not happening.

Yeah but for the next update they should include the ability to highlight then delete or cut a block of text. Will be much better than pressing back a million times.

This exists now, just tried it.

I had a really long reply typed in here, but others beat me to it so I selected it all and deleted it.

? You can cut text instead of deleting characters one at a time.
Actually you don't even need to cut. Highlighting text and hitting the backspace key does it too.

edit: ultra-late

Rather than replying three times with the same thing one of you should explain how. When I select text the only options that show up are select/selectall then copy and paste if there is something copied.

Tell me you at least tried to do so before saying this.

EDIT. Just hit backspace.......

Cut only appears if you select text that you entered. You can't cut from a website for example.

Open a reply, then type in some letters. Select all, and you'll see cut. Either press that or backspace. Woila!

Thanks. That makes sense. I'm pretty sure this didn't work in BeeJive or FB prior to the latest updates hence my complaint. Obviously I tried it otherwise I wouldn't have been able to comment on it. No longer have to worry about the back button jamming and deleting more than you want it to.

Ironically the increased horsepower in the 3GS makes jamming the back button work correctly now. I just tried it. :lol

This is slightly off topic but Verizon is heavily advertising the new enV touch as an iPhone competitor, with commercials emphasizing apps.

"Check out these apps! Show him the cool golf one!" "The enV touch? The one with all the apps?" "Feed your appetite for apps with the enV touch!"

I was curious, thinking maybe Verizon recruited developers to make some cool apps like Sprint tried(and failed) to do with the Instinct.

No. Same old average Java/Brew nonsense with ridiculous prices. eBay app? Looks like crap, and 3.99/month. The golf app from the commercial? $35 for 365 days. Weatherbug from the commercial? 2.99/month.

:lol Ok then.

Exactly. People bitch about AT&T overcharging but Verizon has always been just as bad if not worse in their pricing structure. The subscription thing for apps is ridiculous. Plus Verizon locks tons of features out of their phones to make you pay even more to use their crappy (and also crazy expensive) VCast service.

Who would've thought it works exactly like you would do it on any computer? Instead of giving us some smarmy retort why not take the two seconds to try it for yourself? It's not like we omitted how on purpose, I'd say it's fairly obvious.

Exactly. Verizon does have a great network, but they have their issues elsewhere. They want to charge you for just about everything, and as much as people would like to see the iPhone on Verizon, it runs so counter to their typical plans it's almost hard to see it working on their network.

I'm still amazed at the maintained existence of viewmymessage.com/2. There are soooo many other ways they could handle that. Shit, make all MMS messages go to my account on the attwireless website or something. But to have to log on to a computer to see what someone sent to my phone is just absurd and I'm amazed that users have not been more vocal about this.

They even charge monthly for Visual Voicemail. I'm starting to think that a cheaper iPhone is only going to happen once Sprint or T-Mobile get it (50 years from now or never, whichever comes first).

Verizon is going to do some bullshit to the iPhone, I can't see them being fair and letting Apple do their own thing seperately no matter how much they'd like to have it. The best case scenario is I see Verizon throwing on some kind of iPhone Access $10 or $15/month fee for the hell of it to make up for the lack of app, ringtone and Visual Voicemail subscriptions.

I'm fine with AT&T's service, it's been a few days and I've gone everywhere I normally go. I know they charge $50 for data + unlimited texting and it's gross, but I accept that carriers are not out to be our friends and I'll never find a Sero or Everything Plus on any other carrier than Sprint :/

Verizon won't do shit to the iPhone. Apple has all the leverage in any negotiation. Steve Jobs would rip out his new liver before seeing Vcast on the iPhone.

You know, looking back (even though I thought it at the time), Apple made such a pivotal decision with the iPhone to make it contract with unlimited data plan only.

At that time, it was obvious to me that they wanted to make this the kind of device that people are experiencing now - a device that you actually use a LOT of the features. You know, as opposed to other phones that have the same feature set, but for some reason, be it UI, user experience, or whatever, but they don't get the same use.

By making it online ALL the time (and pretty much requisite for the typical iPhone user), people DID use it. And it paid off big time for Apple, as people find new ways for it to help them. If they offered a range of data plans to suit all walks of people, you'd simply get the entire range of opinions. "Oh, it's not that great." "It's just like any other phone." "It hasn't changed my life.". By fixing it at a premium, unlimited, always connected use, you have the same repeated experience for a lot of people - and that word spreads.

But Apple doesn't seem to care about what the carrier charges for service, and this brings us back to when I said I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon throws on a random fee (or simply inflate data and texting fees) to make up for all the Visual Voicemail/ Ringtone/ V-Cast/ App subscription money they'll lose.

Agreed, but simplifying the interface so the features were easy to find and use was just as important.

A feature that requires drilling down through menus to activate is a feature no one will ever use, you know?

Maybe. I'd gladly pay a fee to avoid Verizon's bullshit, so I'm a bad example. :lol

Oh, definitely. The user interface is first and foremost the key to the iPhones success.

Even simple things like the way they have implemented the new video camera will make it the most used video camera on the web. It's not about the fact that it has it, it's the way Apple has incorporated its application into the phone. I think the iPhone is the most used phone camera on FlickR or some such, and it's not that great a camera.

That said, teh new features of the 3GS camera, namely auto focus BY TOUCH, as well as auto exposure by touch are pretty interesting. It's not like autofocus is something new, but being able to select one instantly is kinda useful. I wonder if you can do some cool effects with the exposure setting too (like fix an exposure).

Very true. Like pretty much everything else in the iPod/iTunes/iTunes Music Store/iPhone/AppStore/AppleTV universe, the whole experience is what makes the whole experience. You have to have all these elements working together. iPod without the click wheel wouldn't have been quite the same the iPod, iPod without iTunes wouldn't have been the same iPod. iTunes without the iTunes Music Store wouldn't have been all it could be, ect. ect. ect. The only thing that really hasn't totally come into its own yet is the AppleTV...but it's cool if you have it connected with everything else, but it hasn't proved itself as essential as everything else in the universe.

iPhone wouldn't be the iPhone if you had to worry about your data plan keeping up with the way Apple really wants you to use the machine.

Except AT&T already has the iPhone, so maybe Verizon will throw on a fee or inflate something to make up for it, but they still have to stay somewhat competitive with whatever carrier in the US has the iPhone too.

Verizon could always do something similar to what AT&T is doing and offer carrier-specific apps that involve a monthly fee (see AT&T's GPS app). Who's to say they couldn't offer a V-Cast app that has a subscription fee? The difference would be it wouldn't be included on the phone at purchase and their app would have to compete with everyone else's in the app store. So it wouldn't survive if it was shit.

We'll see. I don't think Verizon is too concerned with competitive pricing at all and I think they know that people want a Verizon iPhone primarily for the "better" service. I doubt they feel the need to have their service plans be less than AT&T to win people over. Their extremely superior data coverage and finally being able to stop the need for a mass exodus to get an iPhone should be enough to do the trick.

Gotdamnit! I just found that the Trillian Astra beta for the iPhone went to beta testing last week and didn't get a chance to sign up for it. :-/ Personally it's the all-in-one IM client for the iPhone I've been waiting to jump on.

The mail app needs some sort of visual notification system, something similar to the Elert app.
When you get an email you get this.

Yeah, this is the optimal solution. I use the AT&T banking app(my bank supports it), and it works great.

BTW, Apple's new version of the Remote app is excellent for the Apple TV (after the software update). Way better than the little remote that came with the thing.

I downloaded it but haven't used it yet. How does the swipe functionality for the Apple TV work?

So I used redsn0w on my iPhone 2G today to unlock and jailbreak the sucker. Since I have a 3GS now, I'm going to sell the 2G (and pay off the damn ticket I got today). A few questions for anybody that has ever sold one on eBay.

1) Should I take the SIM out before selling it, or should I keep it in?

2) How much should I be able to get for it? I'll be including the nice leather Vaja case I have, and the original dock (but not the AC adapter and USB cable) as well. Also, how much should I start the auction out at?

So the $300.00+ that I paid for my 32GB iPhone has been refunded to my account. What do you think happened? I didn't get an email or anything, and my order is still pending.

The touchscreen is like a laptop touchpad. You use various gestures (multitouch and single touch) across the screen to use it as a remote. It has a little tutorial thing but it's real easy to pick up.

Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about it. As quickly as they seem to get things done over at Cerulean, you should be able to download it by 2011 or so.
