I see what you're saying but at the same time, I think it's fair because they exist. The two top guys are less reasonable and the two less powerful ones are more fair. Yeah, it makes sense, but $20 for texting is pretty shocking and unwarranted in any case. It's just a greedy move, and as the cellphone industry becomes more and more about who has the coolest phone and less about the name it runs on (proven with all the AT&T bitching and yet...), you would think Apple, or AT&T, might start to care. I guess not.

Texting plans actually make me really angry. Go google it there's so much about how big of a ripoff they are. If you downloaded a song at like 5 mb or something using the price of texting it would be like over 2 grand. I think they should just include it with the data or voice plan.

No Verizon, ever.

Lower processor, ram, and data speed. No MMS ever, no video recording, and no voice control. It should run most games decently, you may get stuttering framerate on some of the really intensive games.

That said, it's going to be miles better than any phone you've ever owned. Enjoy.
You can put MMS on a first gen iPhone. It will run natively, too.

It's working on mine so this is not unsubstantiated.

no native MMS, SwirlyMMS (jailbreak app) is nice...and their next version looks to be better

FlickIt is pretty single-purpose, easy to use, and most importantly: Free.

Does purplera1n unlock a 3G 3.0 iPhone?
no, use redsn0w from the dev-team's site for the 3G jailbreak, then download ultrasn0w from cydia to unlock.

Jailbreak tutorial

Unlock:
1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3. Run Cydia or Icy
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
8. Enjoy

I wish ATT would really offer a lower amount of minutes for a voice plan. I just checked tmobile for my usage and I used 35 minutes of talk time, and I'm pretty sure half of them were mobile to mobile. I'm going to have like 10000 rollover minutes.

I have a question - my computer recently had a total hard drive failure and I didn't have my apps backed up. Since then, I've just gotten all of my new apps on my phone without going through iTunes. I do want to go back to using iTunes, so if I sync my apps, will my iTunes be smart enough to know not to delete everything on my phone, or will it overwrite my phone with what's in my iTunes library, which is nothing at this point?

And also, why in the world doesn't my iTunes know what I've downloaded just from having me logged in?!?

YMMV with that Winterboard update + 3GS.

Some people are left hanging in the reboot process, myself included. I managed to get past it and to my springboard once, but I had to reboot and haven't been able to pass the reboot process since.
Sigh.

Yeah, I'm reading that now. Mine booted up the first time (though it took awhile and fucked some of my icons up again). Went ahead and uninstalled WB just to be safe since I don't really use it anyway.

The Dev-team's jailbreak for 3GS has been released:
BigBoss said:
1) Stable jailbreak tested by dev-team
2) Icy + Cydia problem solved (we think).
3) Ultrasn0w tested and working on 3gs
4) Proper kernel patches which will enable logome (after it’s updated for 3.0).
5) Mobile Substrate + Winterboard now working on 3gs.

Yeah, I managed to get back to the SB but it seems like WB permanently fucked up my Cydia. It refuses to run.
Restore time.
I'm going to be giving the Dev Team's method a go this time. They haven't failed me yet.

OMG.

I just found out I can use the T-mobile sidekick prepaid data plan.

As simple as going to my account and switching over.

Internet everywhere :O (on edge).

So wait, if I used purplera1n where's this leave me? Does DevTeam's do anything better? Do I have to restore and then do it from scratch?

iTunes will back up the apps from the phone into iTunes. Your first sync will be longer than normal.

Just stay on purplera1n for now. There's nothing wrong with it and I'm finding the dev-team jailbreak to be really buggy... Cydia has crashed 10+ times...

Seeing as how the iPhone logs everything, if something goes wrong with your iPhone and you revert to the native OS (which I am assuming you can do) will Apple see in the log that you jailbreaked, blame the problems on that and send you out the door?

Odd, I ordered mine the Monday after release and got mine that Friday :lol

I've never seen anyone bitching about this, so probably not. Getting rid of the jailbreak is as simple as clicking Restore.

Quite the opposite for me. Purplera1n gave me problems from the start (had to force restart it because the program didn't do it itself like it was supposed to), and completely crapped out once I installed the new WB.
The Dev Team hack on the other hand has been smooth as butter. No problems to speak of whatsoever.

So yeah... I guess if purplera1n worked fine for you from the beginning, then there's little reason to use redsn0w. If it gave you problems like it did for me, then use redsn0w.

Wow... that's really weird. I ordered mine (upgrade after AT&T changed its policy) two weeks ago (from an AT&T store no less) and received it 1 week ago. Something's fishy with your order.

A question from a new iphone owner. I seem to have misunderstood how sync works. I thought creating a new playlist in itunes, checking sync music and the playlist in the iphone section of itunes, then hitting sync would transfer all the new music over to my iphone. Doing that however doesn't do anything, is there something I'm overlooking?

My guess is that you're not hitting the "Apply" button in the far right bottom corner after you select the playlist you want to sync.

Additionally, you don't need to specify this, the iPhone will sync all the music and playlists by itself. I assume you are doing it by playlist because of size limitations, but just throwing this out there in case you didn't realize.

Nah it's not the apply button as you have to hit apply before you can even click sync. Well, just deleted all my music off the iphone, lets see if just putting it all back works. :/

working against me:

-Rogers phone order
-Canada
-Upgrade, not new purchase

I'm in the exact same situation as you, ordered a 32GB Black 3GS on the 22nd of June, was told 3-5 days. (also got the 299 price, they seemed to be giving it to just about anyone, my bill is nowhere close to $100 a month)

Called today, was told it was still backordered with no ETA :lol

I'm not 18 yet (a few months left) would my best bet be just to have my dad sign for it? Could I transfer it to my name when I turn 18? I don't have any credit built up so I don't know how they would do it.

So it looks like Delicious Library has been yanked from the app store permanently because of Amazon. I was able to download it in time but my wife didn't get around to it. The program is actually way more useful to her since she doesn't know everything we have and it would be a good way for her to be able to look up something on the fly. Is there any way to get the app on her iPhone since I was able to download it?

Wow i could buy a net book for that. I wonder how much a 2G iPhone would be worth.

Actually, that's pretty much how it should work, but what is kinda confusing is that there are multiple layers of checks as well that can prevent a synced playlist from actually syncing. Some layers work as a global layer so it can override other layers.

Start on the left most tab: "Summary"

Is Manually manage music and videos checked?
If this is checked, then the playlists means nothing. This will be drag an drop to your iPhone.

Automatically sync checked?
If NOT checked, then you have to actually click the sync button before anything happens.

Sync only Checked Songs and Videos?
If this is checked, then ONLY those individual files that have check marks will be synced across. If they are unchecked, then that file won't sync across, even if it's part of a playlist that you are syncing.

If this box is unchecked, then I guess unchecked songs will also go across, even if it is unchecked.

On the next tab: "Music"

To get any music at all, you have to have Sync Music checekd.

Then you can choose whether to have all songs and playlists OR select playlists. Remember, the settings from the Summary page will override this.

Same goes for Videos.

If she syncs on a different username on the computer (or a different computer), go into your itunes and right click your app, and do "show in finder". Grab the app's .ipa file and put it into her itunes. You just have to authorize it with your user name and it should be good to go. That's how my brother took a ton of my games.

edit:

Congrats! My brother, his friend and my father all got 300 to 350 for theirs as well. This is another reason why I couldn't get with the "Apple and AT&T are screwing 3G owners!" argument. Just sell your iPhone and you'll be at the same price, WITHOUT the extended contract.

You can 'appshare'.

Log your account onto her iTunes software, essentially authorising/adding your account to her itunes. Copy the app from your library onto her computer and drag into her iTunes (it will enter her iTunes). Next time she syncs it will add to her iPhone.

Now I haven't tried this, but as far as I understand how the apps work, it's DRMed to your account, and by adding your account to her iTunes Software (which is what her iPhone actually syncs to), it is able to be used.

I think. Someone may be able to corroborate this.

It's like me when I have two accounts on my iTunes, one for the US store, and one for the New Zealand store, both sync seamlessly to my iPhone.

This is like getting a whole new phone, and reaffirms my opinion that Apple was wise to enforce an 'unlimited' use internet to really push the device into the realm of revolutionary.

By making it unlimited, people actually use the device to its fullest, and it gets a reputation for being an amazing device.

I had intermittent internet in NZ. I tried to avoid using it, because when I did, it charged $1, and then it charged by MB. I tried to avoid using it, unless I needed it. With the Sidekick plan, I pay regardless, so I just use it. And it's amazing.

What drives me nuts is all of the howardforums posts of people who ordered 22nd or later getting sets now, when I ordered on the 20th and have nothing to show for it. In fact, that same day I was turned away from 32GB units 3 times because of the computer issues Rogers was having! :lol

I have well over the $100 number though. LD is not cheap :(

yeah, didn't work. ATM itunes has copied 1 of the songs in the playlist over to my iphone, but not the rest. Is there any way I can just directly tell it to copy the playlist over without doing all this sync crap?

yup.

(though it seems you haven't read some of my hints)

check "manually manage songs and videos", then drag the playlist over.

One other thing to note - if you music is in a format that is not compatible with the iPhone, it will not sync, I guess. For example, FLAC, avi, wma, etc.

I did read all your hints, but "drag and drop" isn't as helpful as you make it sound :p, but thank you very much for the help.I think it was a format compatibility, even though they were mp3's as I made AAC versions of the songs in itunes and was able to get those over. I still don't know how this stuff works though because I had to sync twice with the same settings for it to actually copy everything. :lol

Yeah, sorry, I probably wasn't as clear as I could have been.

Strange. The iPhone should be easily capable of playing mp3's, unless they're like at a super high bitrate. Re-encoding your music is undesirable, and not an optimal solution.

Furthermore, it shouldn't need to sync twice to get stuff over. Hopefully you'll work out your quirk as things progress. Hope you enjoy the phone, regardless!
