Just bought a new iPhone 3GS. still using my old one, though. gotta take the new one home and set it up tonight. the speed increases and video recording were too much for me to resist.

gotta try Real Racing, Need For Speed, Tiger Woods and some more games on the new device. those ones always felt janky on the 3G.

I have some podcasts on my iPhone 3G that don't want to delete. I delete them via finger swipe and when my iPhone is plugged into iTunes, but can't get rid of them. Every time I plug my iPhone into iTunes and it synchs they magically reappear. Any ideas?

They're on your hard drive?

Charred beat me to it - "20 second lock screen" is what I'm using.
I wonder if it's possible to increase it further.
Supreme Preferences 3.0 has an option to change the lockscreen timeout. I haven't checked it out yet because Supreme Preferences is giving me issues.

Alright, I tried Categories and it sucks. You click an icon, wait for stuff to load, then have to scroll through other icons to find what you want. I think the SpringJumps is much faster access to everything.
You can set categories folders to be always on so they dont have to load (if you have a 3G though that's wasted ram imo) but agree with you, springjumps is better. I only use categories for rarely used apps (like a camera apps folder for camerbag etc)

Delete them from your itunes podcasts section too.

Nope. Later this summer. At least it's gonna be free. Tethering rape is gonna make me have a small riot in my house.

MMS is going to be free? Excuse my ignorance as I haven't been following this thread like I should be/used to be.

Yeah, just regular text rates. Not even AT&T has the balls to charge extra for MMS, I guess.

So, Verizon is gearing up a new app store which will be the only app store allowed to come preloaded on any Verizon device. If you want the official device store, you have to download it later. Verizon wants to host all of the apps on their official store.

And, I'm guessing, they will continue to tack on their gross subcription fees to them so that they're not left out of the money that's made with apps.

Customers purchases of these apps will be charged to their monthly bill...and apps need to be sent to, and approved by, Verizon.

To me, this means a Verizon iPhone is now less likely. Verizon won't compromise for big players like Windows Mobile or Blackberry, but they'll give Apple a free pass? If they don't, I can't see Apple allowing the App store to be replaced with the Verizon Store.

Interesting developments.

Things to try:

-Uncheck them in itunes. (You have to expand the podcast to list the individual episodes) Then make sure your iPod is set to sync only checked items.

-You could set up iTunes to only sync podcasts you haven't listened to.

-You could delete the podcasts you don't want popping up anymore from your iTunes playlist (on the computer) just back them up in an external folder or something first if you want to keep them/

Hrm...so I can just backup my 3G, then restore from backup for the 3GS, right? Seems to be the clear cut thing to do but nebulous complaints abound.

The hell will froze before Apple ships an iPhone that comes with an operator store instead of "the" app store and that even lets you officially install something from other place rather than the app store.

No, really. It won't happen.

Exactly, so does Verizon make an exception for Apple? Doubtful, that'll piss off RIM and Windows, not only are they forcing them to exclude the inclusion of their app stores, but they're making an exception for Apple. Apple may be cool, but Windows Mobile phones are just as important for customers...why make an exception for Apple but not Microsoft/all of it's partners.

This can very well be the sign that people holding off for a Verizon iPhone should stop waiting.

good luck with that, Verizon.

Aight, in the last couple days I've picked up:

BeejiveIM (and got it set up to text people without using my texts)
Pandora
Remote (I'll probably never use this)
iFitness
Air Mouse (way cool)
Lightsaber (lol)
Yelp
A traffic cam app
Facebook

And I feel like I'm just getting started...

What do you guys think of this article?

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/07/13/apples_iphone_wrecking_the_cell_industry.html

Especially this:

Apple Insider said:
When it comes to carriers, particularly AT&T, the researcher sees them as just now realizing the bad bargain they'd struck for themselves. As late as this spring, AT&T has continued to praise the iPhone as virtually saving the company from the US economy's fallout by driving customers to its network and encouraging them to spend more on data plans. But with the launch of the iPhone 3GS in June and the 3G congestion problems in the months leading up to the handset's debut, AT&T was increasingly cast as Apple's anchor -- keeping a good device locked to a carrier that doesn't enable features like MMS and tethering.

"Apple has stolen the march, and in the process has recast AT&T from hero to villain," Moffett says. "At Apple’s June developer conference in San Francisco, where Apple unveiled its new [iPhone 3GS], AT&T was roundly jeered at every mention by the more than 5,000 application developers in attendance... even Apple itself seemed uncomfortable talking about its U.S. partner."

I don't see how Apple has recast AT&T as the villain...I think they've done a pretty good job of that themselves, what with not having MMS or tethering. The reason they were jeered was that they weren't offering the services that other carriers around the world were going to be right away.

Also, the quality of AT&T's service kind of speaks for itself. It's not good.

As for the iPhone "wrecking" the cell phone industry, I think it just broke the cycle of the abusive relationship between carrier and customer. To some extent AT&T is still abusing customers what with charging a premium for text message packages, but with the iPhone they're no longer able to do what many other carriers do with App Stores or Ringtones or What Have You. And it's made handset manufacturers actually speed up innovation to keep up. So is that bad?

Not to mention that all of the North American carriers are on a collision course with LTE (4G), threatening to destroy the idea of exclusive network infrastructures and make the handset the sole defining characteristic of a carrier.

AT&T is basically taking the brunt of the damage by being first to change; all of the policies that Verizon (and Sprint, in a way) have been desperate to hold onto are getting destroyed by vocal consumers and the demands of the tech and software industries - people with absolutely no voice beforehand. It may slim down the company, but it may also give them the best chance for survival, long term.

The analyst is critical, but it seems like it's coming from somebody who's solely interested in AT&T stock price.

This article is a radical headline with no substance to back it up, like a tabloid article or political speech. I don't see any real examples of how the iPhone wrecked the cellphone industry. All it did was innovate to the point where everyone else was forced to answer (LG, Samsung) or be left behind (Nokia, Motorola).

As for AT&T being the villain...I will say their service is good. I switched for the 3GS and I have 3G always (I chalk that up to being in New York) and call quality and reception are pretty good. What makes them suck is what I still deem inflated prices (texting, data) and being the reason USA iPhone users can't tether or MMS like everyone else.

In the big picture, Apple made a giant leap forward and AT&T is doing their best job to keep up while profiting. I don't see how they hurt the industry, they only made it better.

So I know that this is going to be a "duh" statement for many but, holy hot shit, the 3GS is fast.

I've gotten so used to waiting 2 or 3 seconds for the keyboard to pop out after selecting a search field in maps or the app store that I'm still shocked and amazed that it now launches instantly.

previously, i would have to wait around 5 to 7 seconds for the ipod app to load up all my playlists on first launch. but now it's instantaneous.

and spotlight search is now super fast. like going from spotlight on Tiger on an old G4 to spotlight on Leopard on a Core 2 Duo.

just awesome speed increases everywhere.

oh, and Aqua Forest runs super smooth now. i can put in a bunch of strings and water and fire elements and there's no slowdown unless the entire screen is filled. that app was famous at launch last year for killing the 3G.

When did you order?

I ordered on the 20th, so it was about 23 days of waiting. They actually called me twice to apologize and say it was on the way - once on thursday and once today. (I never got the email they swore I'd receive, though - ended up just doing the reference trick search on UPS to figure out when it was coming.)

can someone explain why broken iphones go for more than brand new ones on ebay???

i have a broken iphone but i dont understand why broken phones are gonig for more than new...

What if Apple releases a factory unlocked LTE iPhone in the US? Is that completely unlikely? Will all the carrier's LTE networks be similar or is it like 3G where T-Mobile and AT&T's bands are different?

That Verizon story is pure bluster, by the way. Either they bend over for Apple, or they don't get the iPhone, it's as simple as that. Apple has all the leverage in the world.

Verizon app store. :lol

What, like, the screens are cracked? Cause both my EDGE and 3G have cracked screens but are still 100% functional.... hmmm....

Factory unlocked LTE seems unlikely so long as Apple can negotiate a good exclusivity deal with someone. It will eventually happen as money comes onto the table, though.

It sounds like there will be multiple bands, although they may be unified initially given that GSM won't be going away in the short term. There's nothing particular to guarantee different iPhones based on frequency though; it's more of a dilemma for the phone companies as to which frequencies to use first.

My weakness is buying overpriced gadgets. :lol

it made it easier that I was able to sell my old iPhone for 400 so I didn't get hit too hard in the wallet with this one.

and i didn't have to renew my contract so I'll be eligible for subsidized pricing next year for the new iPhone if I want it.

… and I'm pretty sure I will.

How'd you go about selling the old one?

I really need to do this, as I have a fully functional 3G just sitting there doing nothing now that I need to toss.

Do you keep the simcard in there or what?

I reset the phone to factory conditions then ran the jailbreak/ unlock. No need to put in a simcard, the person who buys it supplies their own. (but i did test with mine to make sure it was activated, at least)

I just used craigslist to unload it. I spent the time to unlock it since I figured that would help me sell it at a higher price. i was right. the dude who bought it was with Rogers (phone is originally from Fido) and didn't want a data contract.

It was the most painless CL experience I've ever had. posted online and sold within 4 hours with no haggling. :D

edit: and, as expected, your av animates much faster on the 3GS than it ever did on the 3G.

Purchase Justified!

Am the only one that sometimes experiences better loading time of websites on edge than on 3G? I know this is a fault of AT&T because it depends entirely on location (in some cities 3G is perfect and in others it is shit), but stuff like this makes me wonder if AT&T will ever get their 3G shit together.

Man...I'm getting pretty bothered by the battery life of my 3GS.

I'm at 47% right now.

  • Notifications On (BeeJive)
  • WiFi On
  • Browsed net over Wifi for an hour
  • Watched some streaming videos over WiFi (GiantBomb)
  • Listened to music for 2-3 hours
I swear I'd only be at 75-80% right now on my 3G.

No you wouldn't. All of the above puts quite a strain on the battery. Just keeping the screen lit is the biggest drainer. Couple that w/ Wi-fi being on the whole time...

I'm gonna resist the 3gs, fellas. My wife has a 3gs, so I know of the benefits it provides in speed. I test the two side by side with the same apps, and it's an obvious step up. But I'm not going to pay a high price for that. Plus I ordered a Flip Ultra HD so my mobile video needs are taken care of.

And lcfiner, I was playing Tiger Woods yesterday on a short inter-island flight and it ran perfectly fine. I got over the "hump" already in terms of badly wanting to upgrade and I'll just wait it out for next year's revision. My contract is up in April. I think having access to a 3gs at home really satisfied my craving for toying with this version.

And who knows, as much as Apple has me enamored with their phone, maybe AT&T or some other carrier will have a killer Android phone or something that rivals it, and I'll be free then to try something different. It's a long shot, especially since I know next year's iPhone will likely be another solid improvement. Maybe an even bigger leap than 3G-3gs.

don't get me wrong, the games I listed earlier are all playable on the 3G. they're just smoother on the 3GS. they got a nice boost but i wouldn't say it would be worth it to upgrade just for game performance.

to be honest, the biggest "wow" i got was from the NY Times app. it was never a speed demon on the 3G, but seeing it in comparison to the 3GS was insane. No exaggeration, it was nearly 10 times faster on the 3GS. I had all front page articles loaded and processed, ready to read, before the 3G had even gotten past the splash screen.

As for next year's inevitably superior model, I'm hoping for 64 GB storage and an OLED screen. maybe they can even make it a bit thinner (doubtful due to battery concerns).

I shot some video with my 3GS last weekend for my nephews first birthday, and it was a real pleasure. I shot a ton of footage, around 2GB worth, and it came out great. It's nice to have 32GB and just not worry about storage. The best part was that getting the phone from my pocket to turning it on and shooting was super fast. Even faster than my sister's Flip camera.

Now I have to figure out how to use iMovie. :lol

Yeah, the 3GS is pretty god for video. In good lighting the quality can be surprisingly great.

Does anyone know how to delete the Nike+ app?

edit: Figured it out.

If it's anything like in the iPod touch 2G, you can enable and disable it on the settings.

How do wallpaper apps on the store works? Do you download an app and get a bunch of wallpapers automatically added to your wallpaper list? Are there apps that get new wallpapers every once in a while? Which is the best to get?
