That would be stunning battery life. I doubt it's accurate.

I have some shure noise-cancelling ear buds.. they don't fit very well into the hole that the Capsule Rebel leaves for the headphone jack. :( Guess I will need to look into some other options -- I was planning on it anyway since they of course lack a mic which made things kind of odd. Still, a bummer.

How do wallpaper apps on the store works? Do you download an app and get a bunch of wallpapers automatically added to your wallpaper list? Are there apps that get new wallpapers every once in a while? Which is the best to get?
I personally like Backdrops since it uses the Interfacelift database, which I've used for years. It's updated daily and has an extensive collection of high quality wallpaper.

to be honest, the biggest "wow" i got was from the NY Times app. it was never a speed demon on the 3G, but seeing it in comparison to the 3GS was insane. No exaggeration, it was nearly 10 times faster on the 3GS. I had all front page articles loaded and processed, ready to read, before the 3G had even gotten past the splash screen.

Most of that is due to it being a pretty crappy app, not the processor difference. There were several versions of that app that crashed constantly upon opening. It's more stable now, but I think most of the problems it has opening up on 3g is bad coding.

yeah, I agree. It was always crashy and unstable. v 2.0 was better but it was still slow. It sucks that the app seemingly requries new hardware to run acceptably but that seems to be the case.

It was always an app that I merely tolerated on the iPhone 3G. but, now I can actually enjoy using the damn thing. :lol

Just picked up the Apple In-Ear Headphones to use at work.

The lack of a carrying case and the super tangly cord on the V-Moda Vibe II's finally bothered me enough that I had to get something with a carrying case.

Sound quality is comparable to the V-Moda's and the comfort is actually an upgrade which is nice. The remote controls on the cable are awesome, as I didn't have volume on my V-Moda's.

...shoulda just bought these in the first place :lol

Need to try them on a call to gauge the mic's quality.

The best part was that getting the phone from my pocket to turning it on and shooting was super fast. Even faster than my sister's Flip camera.

Maybe she has an old model. I JUST got my Flip Ultra HD and it's definitely faster than my wife's 3gs in starting up. Better PQ too.

Does anyone have a password manager app they like? Something that actually backs up during a sync is a must.
1Password is amazing, but costs money.

There is a client that runs on your computer that manages all of your passwords, and wireless syncs it with your iPhone.

their desktop client is good but im not a fan of the iphone version nor their money grubbing

I'd say check out wallet if you have a mac and use safari... i'm using the mobile safari autofill now to be honest

When did you order?

I ordered on the 20th, so it was about 23 days of waiting. They actually called me twice to apologize and say it was on the way - once on thursday and once today. (I never got the email they swore I'd receive, though - ended up just doing the reference trick search on UPS to figure out when it was coming.)

Ah, no wonder, I ordered on the 22nd. And I just checked UPS by reference, my phone is in the system now with Billing Info Received. Here's hoping it comes by Friday!

Did you bother trying to squeeze Rogers for any compensation, btw? I'm wondering if I can get some credits or anything out of them for saying 3-5 days and it being 20+ days.

Depending on where you are, it could be quick. BC orders are shipping from Richmond, so mine went on delivery immediately after a weekend in the "Billing Info Received" state.

Didn't bother rattling the retention chains again; I already to do so when I ordered the phone as a CSR had mistakenly wiped out my old value pack. The apology line has no link to retentions so that avenue is basically a dead end, too.

EDIT: Wow. This thing continues to amaze. Search is actually useful, it doesn't take all day to load Wordjong, and the 32GB is utterly cavernous...I must have 30+ episodes of content on there with another 10GB to spare.

Hardware question. Does anyone's silent switch rattle when in the 'silent' position? Perfectly fine in the ring position, but is a little floaty when in the silent position.

EDIT: This is on a 3GS.

Yeah, my 32GB black does. Kind of wish you hadn't pointed that out.

So since I'm going to have 32 GB of available space soon, I was wondering if there were a program similar to handbrake that supported reading embedded subs in MKVs and hardcoding those onto the video as well.

I've done a bit of searching and I'm pretty sure there's no way handbrake can do this, but I'm sure it's possible because a program called PS3 media server will transcode things on the fly and hardcode the subs into the video and stream the result to the PS3, with support for SSA/ASS embedded subs.

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass that handbrake reads the files but gives up when it comes to subs. (Sometimes I've seen it work if you just force english subtitles in the audio settings, but most of the time nada as far as MKV is concerned.)

Only program I've had success with on an everyday basis is Mediacoder. Not my favorite program (the startup routine is ridiculous) but it seems to do the job. Of course, I'm troubleshooting how to get it to run in Windows 7 as we speak...

Does anyone know of any good clear hardcases? I have a Contour one that I really like, but I want to get a new one. I have an iPhone 3G 8GB, and would prefer something that wasn't bulky.

I've read that jailbroken iPhones can run VLC player... doesn't that support subs?

Well to be honest I'd rather not become reliant on jailbreaking, but if this is true maybe I should look into it.

Yesterday my friend and I were comparing his new 3GS to mine. His hasn't been jailbroken but mine has. He had 5 bars and 3G while I had "No signal." Anyone know what's up with this? My signal returned after a while, but now I'm all paranoid.

While I thinks bars are a crappy meter, I swapped some of our employee's at Best Buy 3G out for 3GS models and they said they aren't dropping calls where they used to anymore. Take that for what you will.

Did you unlock the iphone in addition to the jailbreak?

I have the same problem with mine. When I get no service in an area, it'll take a little while until bars start popping up. I have mine jailbroken, not unlocked

I have an iPod Touch with OS 3, but maybe someone can still answer my question here. Yesterday I bought the earphones with mic, under the impression that I could then use voice activation for iTunes. But I cant find any documentation on it.. is this not supported on the touch?

Voice Control is only for the iPhone 3GS.

How is push with Beejive IM? On the AIM app I frequently lose messages. The app will have a 2 (or more) and I only recieve a single IM when I open the app.

Well I'm finally a case convert. I had my first really bad drop yesterday, from about four feet onto hard sidewalk and it would have left a really nasty dent/scratch in the phone and possibly broke it altogether but my InCase Slider took the bullet. A couple of minor scuffs on a case are so much easier to live with than damage to the phone itself, and will no doubt help with the resale value a year from now when the 3GX (or whatever) comes out. I thought $35 for a case was a bit much, but it's already paid for itself :D

Does anyone have any idea how to get high quality YouTube video playback over 3G? I'm assuming you can get it if you jailbreak the thing but is there an app or something out there that will force high quality? I've got the old 3G btw.

MxTube allows you to choose high or low quality as well as download the video.

I am still on an old 8gb 2G iPhone, which has been suiting me well UNTIL I went to the Apple store to pick up something for work and got a chance to try the 3GS. Man that thing is so much faster, and I am not upgrade eligible until the middle of December, the wait is going to be even worse now.

Agreed, they are well worth it, I have an iSkin on my old 2G iPhone, sometimes it's annoying because it gets lint on it or when playing some games. But I have dropped the phone at least a few times, everytime I am very glad I have the case.

Man...I'm getting pretty bothered by the battery life of my 3GS.

I'm at 47% right now.

  • Notifications On (BeeJive)
  • WiFi On
  • Browsed net over Wifi for an hour
  • Watched some streaming videos over WiFi (GiantBomb)
  • Listened to music for 2-3 hours
I swear I'd only be at 75-80% right now on my 3G.

Its the push notifications. If you turn those off you'll have a substantial increase in battery life. Apple's implementation of Push notifications is apparently not very efficient.

Push shows the most recent IM, but when you go into Beejive it shows all the IMs. I love Beejive. Well worth the $12 I spent on it.

Correct. I just don't understand No Case-Age.

I decided to dive into that. Wish I hadn't bought the paid AIM app first. So far I think the interface is smoother. Only thing is it disconnected me after I changed the settings to 24 hours. Hopefully it just did that because I originally signed in under the default hour.

I don't have an iPhone, but I have an iPOD touch 2gb 16gb, I'll probably ask my question here till I can find an official iPOD touch thread.

I had a couple questions after I've jailbroken my ipod touch...

Is there any way I can hide the whole status bar even when I am on the home screen?

Also, any way to enable bluetooth on 2.2.1 firmware without having to go to 3.0? That firmware is still too unstable and slow for me (I need jailbreak, or bust).

does anybodys iphone headset say "China" near the plug?

im looking to buy a replacement pair on ebay, and this one seller says they are genuine and that genuine ones say China. mine dont say this, but they are from 3G almost a year ago, so maybe it changed?

If you have a jailbroken phone, in Cydia you can browse for different colors. For the App store, I'm not aware of anything that will..

Anything in particular?

And what's the word on Google Latitude for iPhone?
