Thanks for all the help people, right now I think I have a clear idea about the situation. I'm gonna weigh in the possibilities, I'll look for a way to get one from HK, even consider the $1200 officially unlocked iPhone that is sold locally.

Edit: Thanks for for the link Doc, I'll definitely look into that.

How much is the locked local phone? Why do you want to avoid it so badly? (I think there's a phone in Saudi - Mobily?)

It's what I would suggest. Unless you want to Jailbreak your iPhone anyway.
I wanted the iPhone for the exact reason that it is intuitive, elegant, and simple. Jailbreaking potentially takes that away.
:lol
This makes no sense.

Yeah, Mobily offers locked phones + contracts, but as far as I know they haven't started distributing the 3GS yet. Axiom Telecom on the other hand is the one that's providing the officially unlocked 3GS for the time being.

I don't know what Icy is but I don't think it's installed.

How do you do that? I can't find a place to turn these functions back on.
It's an installer like cydia. I asked because you might have installed supreme preferences through Icy and that is why you are unable to uninstall it in cydia.

Doesn't it?

I suggested he get an officially unlocked one, but if he wanted to jailbreak regardless, then he should just get a locked one and jailbreak it, since he was going to anyway (no sense in paying extra if he's going to head down that route anyway).

Then, judging from the people who have issues with jailbreaking (and yes, I know they're probably in the minority), on top of having to be careful with updates and other stuff, you can't say it makes it more simple.

Granted, there's a lot to gain from it but I don't think simplicity is one of them. Like I said it increases the potential for more issues, and is thus not something I want to deal with.

Sorry, I'm tired.

Some local Swedish website mentioned something about new 3Gs "overheating" or "heating up" a lot. Is that really the case or?

If I remember, that turned out to be certain cases causing a discolouration.

A few noob questions:

- I just downloaded Snapture to see what it's like and it just gives me a black screen. I touch the screen and hear the photo noise but nothing happens. Reading the comments they say that it doesnt work on a 3GS? Can anyone shed some more light on this for me?

- Is there a way to zoom in using the standard Camera function? I could have sworn it was a touted 3.0 feature but I can't figure out how to do it if it is.

- Is there a SMS app on Cydia that is worth it? Like I've seen BiteSms and QuickSms and Swirly etc. which one is the best? I text quite a lot so extra functionality would be cool.
Also I live in Australia so I can MMS already, if all these apps do is allow for MMSing then I won't worry about them

Edit:

The [Facebook] app is pretty much done - we're just working on translating it into a bunch of languages.
Fucking finally, can't wait for the updated Facebook app. Current version is buggy as hell and missing heaps of features. I still use it more than on my laptop though. My main gripe is that I can't respond to Wall Posts without having to make an entirley new one.

Fuck!... I thought this thing would backup everytime I sync it with the computer.

Just did a complete restore after syncing and the last backup I had was from August 4th... there goes 3 days worth of photos, textes, contacts etc :(

edit: nvm I was wrong. Woohoo!

Alright WTF! So my Iphone said nearly full battery and then proceeds to shut off. Get home and plug it in and it tells me its dead. Thats fine, I'm cool with that. It seemed like a long time for my phone to still have such high battery.

Now its been two hours charging and the display still reads empty battery and it wont turn on. Is this common? What the fuck is going on, its really pissing me off.

FYI its a new 3GS only about 3 weeks old, never dropped or anything. I tried charging in the outlet and through my computer. It says its charging but the battery display thing hasnt moved for almost two hours. And it wasnt overheated or being used heavily or out in the sun

I had the same problem with my 3GS after having it for a month. The battery life was all over the place then it would just shut off randomly and take forever to charge. Was like it for about a week, then one day ( about 3 weeks ago ) I woke up and it was fine. I let the battery run to empty a few times like someone mentioned then it was all good. Very strange!

But did it ever just sit there at the minimum red line for hours and not change? I mean if im experiencing what you are ill just wait it out but if yours was different I probably need to go exchange it.

Do any GAF-Runners run with their iPhone?
What earbuds do you use?

K Thx. Bai.

I just use the old iPod earbuds with the black meshy stuff because they stay in my ears well and I don't care about sound quality if I'm running. Boring, I know.

By the way if you're looking for a running app I can vouch for Fitnio.

Thanks for the reply. My problem is that the standard iPod earbuds fray around the edges. Also it's probably my ghetto ass EDGE iPhone that's been dropped a dozen plus times, but sometimes it will randomly change songs, pause, etc.

More than anything I need a new iPhone, but I'm not particularly pleased at how fast the rubber stuff wears out.

So I upgraded from windows xp
to windows 7 and copied the interity of my iTunes folder before installing iTunes on 7.

Upon instalation I pointed to the existing library file and yeah iTunes loaded it all, including music, apps etc.

But the apps won't sync with the iPhone! WTF is this hsit! Sure I can redownload them all, but hey they're over 60, why would I do that? Better yet, why should I do that?

Is there any way I can instruct iTunes to realize those apps in the app folder are mine and it should sync them with the iPhone?

But I am logged in.

This is me trying to download an app I already have:

These are my apps, some icons won't load, some dupes on it (the ones I redownloaded already):

Seriously, what a mess.

Alright my phone has been charging for 6 hours and it still wont take it. The display continues to only show the small red line that indicates its dead. Its been slightly over 30 days since I bought the phone, will they exchange it? Because Im furiously pissed about this right now.

Other than the possibility of a bad charger/cable, the phone is bad.

Apple covers it for a year, unless you got the Applecare which is like 2 or 3 years. Either way you are covered.

Take it into an Apple Store, make an appointment, they will switch it out with another one.

I bought it at an AT&T store does that make a difference?

It cracks me up that people buy shit without even knowing if it has a warranty.

You seriously think they'd just tell you "tough shit" right after you bought a phone with an obviously faulty battery?

Solved my problem by going back to Windows XP.

A bit pissed because I lost all application data in the process, but whatever it isn't worth restoring to a previous point and losing a couple of textes and whatnot.

The thing I'll miss the most will be Peggle's replays I think.

Oh and now I'm stuck on XP, that's a shame too. I'll try a different process next time instead of just copying the iTunes folder.

So I can only use the iTunes backup utility to back up the library to a CD/DVD but not an external HDD? bwahahahahaha what a fucking joke!

I swear, Apple does a lot of things right, but the things it does wrong are soooo fucking wrong it's not even funny.

I love my iPhone but the simple act of upgrading my own computer OS has become such a fucking pain in the ass because of it. Holy shit. Just allow the damn phone to independently sync with any new computer/OS you have, using some kind of authorization/deauthorization process or something. Jesus, what if my computer breaks or gets stolen? I lose all my stuff even though it's all stored inside my phone? Should I burn a handful of DVDs per week to have an up-to-date backup?

But I'll stop my rant and will stop bugging you guys with my iPhone issues and instead will stick to google to figure out some things that should be easy and simple and instead are hard and complicated. smh

I agree, but I think this particular missing feature is just an oversight as the years have gone on. If you have a Mac you can use Time Machine, at least.

Hey crew,

I don't know how many other developers we have here, but I wanted to let you know that I've just open-sourced a portion of MobileGAF to GitHub. It's a static library that performs XPath queries against HTML/XML and returns an array of hierarchical Tag objects.

It makes it trivially easy to scrape data from a website (like GAF) and repurpose them for use in a native iPhone application.

It's called TagScraper, and can be found here: http://github.com/searls/TagScraper

Edit: For those interested in MobileGAF, I've recently made plans to reimplement it using a newer version of Three20 and outsourcing all of the XML manipulation so it will run at a sane speed under older EDGE & 3G iPhones. Since the project won't require the TagScraper code anymore, I figured it made sense to open source it.

Hey guys, I just got my friends old 16gb 3G when he upgraded to the 3GS. Problem is I can't get it to work with my sim card and I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask about unlocking and etc.

Either way, this thing is cool as hell. I think I have like 3 pages full of apps already :lol

More and more news of T-Mobile shutting down the use of their Sidekick prepaid plan for use with non-Sidekick devices.

Previously, it was pretty easy to just switch your prepaid to the SideKick plan, which allowed for $1 per day internet (on EDGE), and unlimited text. It was pretty reasonable, I thought.

But now, A whole bunch of people (including myself) are experiencing difficulties getting an internet connection (although voice/text work fine, and some people say their email is good too). Many reports of calling up T-mobile only to confirm that they are locking it down.

Which is a shame, because I quite enjoyed it. The SideKick prepaid was a lot of budget-minded users alternative. I doubt many of us will want to pay more for data (especially on EDGE), so will probably just go back to no data plan.

Just a heads up to those of you with the free version of wikipanion. Do NOT update to the latest version! The dev made a mistake that allows the free version to have the same functionality as the $5 Plus version, namely queue mode, which allows for offline browsing. The new update strips that functionality away once again.

I haven't even noticed or bothered with it. There's a folder in the iTunes folder that holds all the mp3s, sorted by artist. (this varies of course, depending on your settings and source setup).

I just drag and drop that to the external. To be honest, as a longtime windows user this was my preference.

Edit: luckily I don't have that many apps, as well

Anyone had issues with GPS ever since 3.0 upgrade. I've ignored thus far but it gets annoying. It always gives me the wrong place on maps, places that are miles away. Could it be an issue with jailbreaking? I haven't looked into it at but just want to get some stuff right away.

Don't ask why but I've heard this is only a problem if wifi is off on your device. Is that the case?

Is the Iphone 3GS worth the extra $100? Might go and buy an iphone tomorrow(with 2 year plan) for $100. Which I think is a good deal.

i've had vey recent problems. here's something that i found works to get it back going.

turn off 3g and wifi, go to maps and hit locate. it should lock on to you properly now. for some reason, it would default to a wifi skyhook location or to the cell towers in my area

if it still doesn't work, turn on airplane mode for a second then turn it back off. then go back to maps

once you get the gps lock, you can turn the 3g and wifi back on but there's a big chance you'll lose it again if you exit maps or the gps app of your choice after a while.

seems like a big clusterfuck bug for apple with 3.0 (or 3.0.1 depending who you talk to)

yes. between 2 to 5 times faster for all major operations (app launching, spotlight search, bringing up the keyboard). especially considering the new 3.0 OS came out, which is kinda laggy on the older 3g hardware.

it's a single extra charge upfront but it makes a huge difference for as long as you use the device (plus you get 16 GB storage, video recording, compass, voice control to boot).

do it.

Absolutely in so many ways, and it'll only be more apparent as some 3GS exclusive apps/games are released.
