It's positively obnoxious. The songs are tagged in my library and show up in my iTunes library on the phone as tagged but they never show up on the phone itself.

i used to have that problem. the solution for me was this:

go to song(s) that arent updating and right click -> get info
check mark the box while the cover art area is blank, basically erasing cover art
press ok
right click -> get info
copy paste cover art into the box
press ok
sync

worked for me every time. also try deleting the cover art from the "cover art" tab or w/e it is

Last time I asked in this thread about the advantages of purchasing a 3GS no-contract + officially-unlocked over a jailbreaked none-contracted + locked phone someone suggested that I wouldn't be able to use some of the features of the official firmware (like Push. can someone confirm and further explain?).

Now if I go ahead and purchase the former but still jailbreak it (as it was always my intention to do so) would I be able to use those features or not? because as some of you have put it, in the case of push, it requires authentication. But if the phone is already officially unlocked, wouldn't that enable me to use it even on a jailbroken iPhone?

I need the answer to this question ASAP, like in a matter of hours, because I've contacted a friend who lives in New Zealand and asked him to buy me one before flying back home. It'll cost me around $760 for the 16 gigs as opposed to $600 (the one I formerly considered, locked/no contract 16 gigs).

Good deal? worth it?

No worries, if you jailbreak an activated, factory unlocked phone you'll be able to receive push notifications.

iPhone sales info from Japan:

In June, the iPhone 3G 8GB and 16GB were #1 and #2 respectively in the smartphone category. NTT CoCoMo Aquos SH-04A came in third. The smartphone segment in Japan is up 80% this year, while conventional handset sales have plummeted.

This month's figures, for July, find the iPhone 3GS 32GB the #1 selling phone in Japan (all categories) and the 16GB model at #9.

Does anyone know why no matter how many times I add album art to some CDs, it doesn't transfer to my iPhone? Pisses ne off to no end...
this is a recent problem with iTunes.. I came across the same thing with Windows 7 not showing album art even though iTunes did. To fix it, short answer is to drag and drop the art you want onto the files. It seems if you drop the art on the files it adds it to the tag info, but if you have itunes download it automatically it sometimes doesn't update the actual file, only the itunes database.

if you already have the art downloaded but it's not showing up, select the song(s), right click on the art and select copy, then right click on the songs and select "clear downloaded artwork", then right click back on the artwork window (which should now be empty) and click paste. this should update the actual files. I've had 100% success rate in Windows 7 doing this.

Don't know why it's doing this on itunes now. I have literally ripped hundreds of albums and used the "Get Album Artwork" feature without a problem. but since moving to windows 7 I noticed that anything I've ripped to AAC recently (since my iphone 3gs) isn't getting art properly. Should be noted this is only AAC rips. MP3 downloads "seem" to be fine with the get album artwork function.

edit - warning, do NOT drag and drop the art back on to files that already have downloaded art. itunes will give the songs/albums two pieces of artwork then. very annoying.

Alright, I just picked up a 32GB 3GS yesterday and I'm absolutely loving the hell out of it. I've never had a 'smartphone' before so this is a HUGE, enormous upgrade. I have a reallllly stupid question to ask though.

My roommate just informed me that the headphones that came with it actually have a mic and volume/track control built in. I didn't notice this and used my regular headphones with the iPhone on my way to work today. Since the iphone jack is actually a '3.5-mm mini-jack', did I just completely destroy the jack by using regular 3.5mm headphones?

I know this is a silly question, but I thought I would double check. Do any of you use your non-apple headphones with this or do you all stick to the ones that came with the phone?

Thanks!

your jack is fine. use the apple headphones or whatever ones you like.

I have a different issue that just started. I suspect a bug in whatever version of iTunes 8 I'm using. Anyway, two things will happen:

1. The art that I've dragged to itunes to have it embedded, will result in a black screen when on the iPod. The little itty-bitty album art icon in itunes in the top right corner will show the art, but the background (which should be the art of the song playing) will be black.

2. The other bug is that half the image will show, and the other half will be black. Like the image is cut in half.

Annoying.

timmy01 said:
that sounds like the image data in the file is getting corrupted somehow.. what kind of files? MP3 or AAC?

MP3. This has happened w/ albums that never have had any album art embedded, or after I've deleted and added different album art.

check to see if the ID3 tag is corrupted.

right click on the song. Choose "Convert ID3 Tag..."
select the box and choose "None"
convert
right click again and choose "Convert ID3 Tag..."
select the box and choose 2.3

at this point you may need to copy and paste the cover art like I said above, especially is using itunes 8. BUT, if there was any corruption in the ID3 tag this will clear it out.

I had a couple of MP3s that I had where the tags were all messed up and it wouldn't let me fix them (itunes OR tag&rename). I blew them away and recreated them and they worked fine. Doing it inside of itunes ensures that you won't actually lose the tags when you rebuild them as it has the data both in the tags and in the db.

For the life of me, I cannot find this option.

I have a couple of songs, for whatever reason, the cover art does not save.

it only works on MP3s, not AACs.

on a right click on an MP3 it should be the third menu item from the top.

if you have picture corruption happening in an AAC file, go to "Get Info" and go to Artwork. Click inside the artwork window and something should highlight. if the delete option becomes available, it means you have corrupted picture data in there. Delete it and you should be fine. If the Delete option doesn't become available.. umm... I don't know what else to say.

I think my 8GB 3G is busted :( The home button no longer responds. And I keep getting this error message that "the accessory I've plugged in is not compatible with iPhone..." when there's no accesory plugged in at all and I've never plugged anything in that wasn't the usb cable that came with it.

I think the problem may have been caused by this iphone armstrap thing I started using on my runs. I got it so I wouldn't have to hold the phone when my hands started getting sweaty. When I took my phone out of it this morning, it looked like the strap was trapping the sweat in the part that holds the iphone. It worked fine for a few hours after that but now nothing.

I set up an appt with a genius bar for tomorrow after work. Anyone else familiar with these symptoms?

Can anyone explain why my iPod Touch won't connect to the internet? I have a wireless router in my home that 2 computers are set up with and they work fine. My iPod can recognize the router but can't connect to it for some reason.

Check your WEP/WPA settings and make sure they're entered correctly. And make sure your computers are able to connect to the internet wirelessly from the same access point, too. I've been having issues recently where our modem will go out, but the wireless will still work. So I'll get full bars, but no web access. So check your modem. Other than that, i'unno.

Right, thanks, it was an AAC, but I sorted my issue. The delete option WAS available, but whenever I tried to delete or replace it with something it didn't stick.

Here's how I solved it:

I know it's not ideal, but I re-encoded it back into an AAC (I know it will lose quality, but what the hell, it's just a 1:10 minute track of Zelda Four Swords Field BGM), but it kept failing. On closer inspection, the track would cut out at 59 seconds. So I selected info and had it 'stop' at 59 seconds. After that it encoded fine, and could save picture data. So the file was corrupted. I might check back into my time machine, but I have a feeling this was a corrupted file from import. Thanks anyway!

Sounds like corrosion. Give it a good blow, but I suspect hardware damage.

Hootie: Some basic trouble shooting:

Try turning off wifi on the iPod and back on - does it reconnect?
Try deleting the wifi profile and reconnecting.
Try resetting the router.
If you have security, try turing it off and seeing if it gets through.

May help to barrow down where the issue lies.

Sounds good. I find it odd that the phonebook functionality isn't in the iPod app (that I could ever find at least) despite being a key component of the standard m.facebook.com. Looking forward to it.

I ended up just deleting the songs that won't update their disc art after they didn't update with the measures above and the newly copied files are showing them. Hopefully it sticks.

Does the 3gs have different power requirements than older models. My car head unit charger doesn't charge my phone anymore and I keep getting USB overload on my macbook while charging sometimes.

I have a question about iTunes with Windows. My brother got an iPod touch today and is trying to sync his iTunes music to it but iTunes won't recognize it. The computer recognizes the iPod as a digital camera which is just really weird but it won't show up at all in iTunes. Does anyone know whats going on here?

I'm not sure about power requirements, but around the release of the iPhone 3G, Apple removed the firewire spec for charging. If you charger dates from before then, it's possible it was using that spec, and hence won't charge through there anymore. Worth looking into.

Not sure about the USB overload thing -that doesn't sound normal. Apple products should work pretty seamlessly with each other. What exactly is the error? Could be the iPhone is faulty and drawing too much? Didn't think that could happen. Do you have a MacBook Air?

Not sure about your specific issue, but being recognised as a camera is not abnormal - it has an image area on the memory space that gets recognised as a digital camera by many things.

Not sure why it isn't syncing. Try different USB ports.

I have a question for those of you who plug your iphones into your car stereo system through the auxiliary jack: When you receive calls, does your iphone's ipod fade the music out and your phone starts ringing, but when you answer, you can't hear anything through the car speakers? I've looked around and ive heard people are able to do this, but I have to unplug the cable from the headphone jack to be able to hear the person on the phone...

Ok dudes, So I have some queries.

I'm interested in getting a 3G 16GB iphone, but they seem really unreliable and very prone to breaking. Just reading this last page alone it seems like every second person is having some pretty serious difficulties with their phone. Not to mention my first hand experience in my family both sisters had 8gb iphones and they are both broken and out of warranty.

So my question is, are they really that unreliable? I really want one for apps and web browsing but if I fork out the money only to have it die on me I would rather not, thanks

Yup, pretty much. There is a possibility that one you'll get might some day break. You're probably best off not getting one.

Really, what kind of question is that? "Are they really that unreliable?" Are you trying to call everyone who has had a fault a liar? The evidence is there. The people who had problems had problems. But at the same time those that didn't didn't say a thing. And everyone said it's the most amazing device ever and some have had their lives changed by it.

Look, there's no promise that if you get one, it won't break and will last forever. But then ,we don't know what you plan on doing with it, how careful you are with etc. Some people have had bad luck with their iPhones, others good luck, some people have been careless, some people have just had accidents. Some people have had software issues and so on and so on and so on.

I don't think It can be summed up into one "is it unreliable?". You're asking a single question, as a blanket to everyone. What can we say?

Anyway, my vote is yes, it's unreliable.

bought a used 3G today for $75 thats in good condition

only issue is that the vibrate switch is broken

is this a common issue?

how might i go about fixing it?

funk0ar said:
Without all the condescending bullshit, thanks for your input.

:lol

Eh, apologies.

I think there is a fair amount of issues - but I can't really tell if these issues are more frequent than any other device that gets used as frequently, and is so central to the day-to-day activity of the user. If anything, it could be that people just so badly WANT it to run smoothly.

Again, forums are the breeding ground of negative concerns. You won't get people chiming in and saying, "Ok my iphone was working well today. Check for another day!" (well not often).

My issues I've had with my iPhone:

Fingerprints
Possibly stuck home button
Coating wearing from the camera cover
Slowness
Apple Logo of Death
In accurate battery
Dodgy wi-fi reception
T-mobile shutting off access to the sidekick prepaid plan
Headphone remote not working
Spam callers
Removing headphone had iPhone still thinking they were plugged in
Push activation draining excessive battery
App crashes
Touch screen erraticness
Smugness

But really, a lot of these are not even hardware related, and often once-off issues that were corrected by changing my use. I mean, it was probably lint in the headphone socket causing the headphone issues - that would affect any device - how would you tell that it's an iPhone specific inadequacy?

The device is so amazing, you just WANT it to work perfectly. In that scenario, if not working perfectly all the time, and it being such a complicated device, it's hard to recommend, but that probably goes for any smart device. A lot of complicated things tend to be not 100% reliable.

The main example in my case is that I cannot rely on my iPhone ever rebooting properly (so I can't ever do the, 'oh just reboot your phone' thing). I need to be near my computer to fix it if it chooses to not reboot. And very few people are experiencing exactly the same thing as me, so I don't know how I can fix it. Fortunately, it seems to have gone away with the latest update, but I'm still a bit weary...

wow, so many issues. i have had no issues with my iphone 3G other than the occasional slowness and crashing of apps due to low memory. i attribute these faults to the jailbreak though, as i like to use Backgrounder which keeps my programs running after i close them.

my vote is no, its not unreliable.

If your phone is purchased legitimately, take it into an Apple store if you have any problems with it. Apple will either fix it or replace it with a new phone. Either way, problem solved. That shouldn't be a factor for a purchase.

Right, but his concern was that the iPhone in general was unreliable and prone to breaking, particularly out of warranty. I'm guessing he wants it for more than one year.

I just have a 13" macbook. I'll try my 2G iPhone to see if it's doing it as well. My head unit is a Sony CDX-GT820IP, Mfg date is 10/15/08. When I plugged it in this morning on my way work it specifically said this unit doesn't charge :( didn't say that yesterday. Kinda sucks but it is what it is I guess.

EDIT: 3GS + backgrounder = WIN! True multitasking FTMFW!!

based on customer satisfaction surveys for the 3GS revealed last week. 99% of users said they were satisfied and around 80% said they were very satisfied with the phone. if they were really unreliable, i doubt the numbers would be that high.

Same thing here...Did you update to 3.0? I did and it caused my WiFi to become very unstable from disconnecting to having a horrific overall signal. 2.2.1 always gave me a solid signal everywhere in my apartment and performed flawlessly.

Needless to say I reverted back to 2.2.1 until they work out the kinks.

It sucks because of all the 3.0 app updates but what is the point if the WiFi is so borked?

his question was specifically the 3G. I don't think anyone would disagree to say the 3GS is a much better phone build-wise.

FWIW I am in that 80% number. Having previously used a Series60 phone (loved it) and a WinMo Tilt (liked it but at the same time had plenty of issues with it) the iphone is hands down the best phone I've ever used... coming from the WinMo phone that isn't saying a ton, but again, my Series60 phone (candy bar 6620) was awesome. the iphone is the first phone that has never had to CONVINCE me that it is a real full fledged internet device. It just is. Granted most of that is software but even certain hardware features seem faster than my winmo phone. connection quality seems better, GPS lock is faster and more stable, camera is a ton better, tiny things like a standard headphone jack, etc.

I had a dumb realization over the weekend. As a society we've progressed technologically so much that we take it for granted.

There's a thing in my pocket that's about the size of a deck of cards that is a:
  • Phone
  • MP3 Player
  • Mobile Gaming System
  • Mobile Internet Browser
  • Mobile Movie Player
  • Mobile Book Reader
  • GPS Turn by Turn Navigator
  • Camera
  • Video Camera
Just thinking about how far we've come in my lifetime is pretty crazy. I've definitely said that "technological advances feel like they're slowing down", but it's tough to say that in the face of a device like this.

:D it's cool!

You see to me that sounds like a fairly big amount of problems, which with a more simpler device you just would not experience. But you are right, it's an amazing bit of machinery that does a hell of a lot of things so you kind of expect a few things to go wrong here and there. I guess in another 3 or 4 years smart phones would hopefully be past all of the small issues.

I will think on it more, I really do want an iphone I just am sceptical. One final thing, are 16gb'ers less prone to these problems? As I said earlier both of the ones my sisters had were 8gb'ers and from almost day one they hand things going wrong and were sent back to apple multiple times. However someone told me that the 8bg'ers were notoriously much worse than the bigger ones.

thanks for the help.

even scarier, 4 of those things didn't even exist when I was a kid (thirtysomething) and the thought of those 4 things existing along with everything else in a product like you are mentioning probably would have seemed like as much sci-fi as hoverboards and rocket ships. Hell, even the science-fiction shows and movies at the time kept focusing on space travel and other similar technologies but then their communications and media devices were all bulky, horrible quality, and frankly not too far beyond what we already had at the time.

No one goes on the Internet to post "hey guys, nothing to add, just wanted to mention everything is swell!"
