nah... there have already been suggestions on this. Make the "fast track" a pay to play setup for developers. Instead of charging them $99/year charge a fast track dev $999/year. Setup an honor system with strikes and penalties. etc. The problem is apple started it out as a forum basically... a free for all with them as the moderator, and they have to change this. Recognize that there are actual upper tier developers, middle tier folk, and the homebrew crowd looking to make their first million on the next must-have app or make a buck on a fart app.

I think the concept of an approval process is necessary, but the current system is highly broken for as large as the store has turned out to be. Allow the upper tier of developers to moderate themselves with apple only taking the ball on legalities or ratings. This allows both highly anticipated apps and bug fixes to hit with minimal delays, and in the same turn gives apple MORE time to spend on approval for the smaller apps... the ones where a more critical eye might very well be needed to stop exploits or malware.

That's not too bad. I'm not sure the segregation is a great idea, but that would probably work. I guess the developer's themselves choose whether to be premium. It seems weird to be able to throw money at the approval process to make it faster, however.

Has the 3GS overheating problem been fixed yet? I'm looking to get an iPhone but I can't find anything regarding a resolution of the issue...

It never was an issue.

I just got back from one of my classes this semester, and we need a pedometer. Is there a pedometer/app for the iPhone? I was looking at that Nike+ thing, but I'd have to get Nike shoes, which I really don't want to do right now.

1. you don't need Nike shoes, just the receiver that can be put inside a tiny pouch and secured to the laces of any shoe.

2. for a simple pedometer, I would recommend just buying a standalone 5 dollar pedometer thing to clip on your belt. less hassle.

Oh, ok cool thanks. The Apple site made mention of using a Nike+ shoe, so it threw me off. I was actually thinking of getting the DS pedometer since I am a horrible nerd.

Marware has this cool new case out. I'm thinking about picking it up. It's a three piece plastic case that can slide onto different attachments like a holster or arm band for $45.

Cool idea, going to wait to see if it's a good execution though.

What's the best FM tuner any of of you have tried? I'm trying to decide whether to buy the Griffon accessory or not.

How does the iPhone Gift card work? Does the recipient have to show proof of an AT&T account at the Apple store before claiming the iPhone?

And if the person already has an account, or doesn't want one, will she be allowed to take the phone or must it be activated before leaving the store?

Hey...

...did you know that if you tap the clock at the top of your screen while you're in Safari, it auto-scrolls to the top of the page?

I did!

I had a weird feeling that you didn't.

Tapping the top bar to scroll to the top of the page was never a secret :D

As far as I know it must be tied to an account before they leave the store.

I've only been using it for a few days and I already knew about that, now if only there's a way to jump to the bottom of the page...

Well what's the least shitty? I used to have a pretty decent one way back, but I can't remember the name of the brand.

Some are ok, your mileage really varies with fm transmitters. I had a cheap one that I bought in a grocery store and it worked pretty well for me while I was in high school, and that was some no name brand.

DLO has a good reputation for transmitters. I'd start there.

That works for almost all apps.

Do they make touch sensitive OLED screens?
Yeah, since 2007, and the tech has only become more sophisticated since then, meaning multi-touch isn't out of the question for any OLED panel LG manufactures for the iPhone.

K, so I've come to the conclusion that reception in my apartment is terrible, regardless of where I go within it.

So, I was thinking of signing up for the $2.95/month Skype plan for unlimited calling over wifi within the US.

Anyone else have experience with this? Is this a viable replacement for making calls? Any quality issues, echoing, lag, etc?

I know it's a low cost to test it, but I thought I'd ask before signing up.

Just to let people know that Facebook 3.0 is now available.

No more 'live feed' which fucking sucks imo. Not sure if I like it yet.

how do you get the updated version. It still says v 2.5 on the app store for me right now

The point is that the regular feed is the live feed. It isn't missing anything. The whole Live Feed gimmick with a "Top Stories" front page from the old design was shit.

So finally deceided to take the plunge and get an iPhone the only thing is everywhere I've been in my hometown is that I usually don't get a signal at all on it. Yet my S-E phone through o2 never had a problem like this.

Just wondering whether you think I should take it back, or whatever.

That is true, but now it doesn't update with everything. This is what happened to the online web version when they upgraded ages ago. Like people commenting photos, writing on peoples walls etc. It still has this, but only to your immediate friends. Maybe I like the optional being nosey aspect.

Did my update by my phones app store. Was just there in the update tab.

I let someone use my (naked) iPhone for a bit and lo and behold I end up with a little ding on the screen. I'd imagine trying to toothpaste it out wouldn't be a good idea with the oleophobic covering... Any other possibilities for a do-it-yourself remedy?

mine's fine - i never get interference on it at all. dunno what it's like in the states though, in aus i tune it to 104.6 and never have a problem.

they just aren't gonna touch a simple aux input to the deck in your car though in terms of quality. still, sounds fine.

Well I would hope you would take it back, I don't think you're going to be very happy with a phone that usually doesn't get signal in your town. I'd try a replacement first, if that doesn't work might have to look at different phones.

Did you get the 3GS or the 3G?

If you need a portable power source and/or ability to recharge the iPhone on the go, I would recommend Tekcharge Mobile Power. Got or for $22 at Amazon. It uses 2 or 4 AA batteries. I test it using 4 rechargeable Duracell 2650mhA and was able to get 10+ hrs worth of 3GS usage with phone batteries @ 100% or charging the entire time. In fact, I was able to play a game, Need For Speed Undercover @ 85%, and once I quit, it was @ 100%.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but the Yelp app has been updated and includes an augmented reality Easter Egg. All you have to do is shake the iPhone 3 distinct times and the "Monocle" will be activated.

Here's a link to the story:
http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/27/yelp-iphone-application-adds-augmented-reality-easter-egg/

Augmented reality is only possible on the iPhone 3GS since it needs the phone's compass and it wasn't supposed to debut until the iPhone OS 3.1 release, which is why Yelp had to hide their feature so Apple would be unaware of its available during the testing phase.

The feature works good, though in my experience it seems the compass is a little off. Try it out yourself before Apple pulls it!

I couldnt get this to work until I watched this video of unlocking the easter egg:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHEcg6FyYUo&NR=1

Once you have the youtube video queued, shake your phone in the exact same motion and duration as the guy in the video, and it should work. I got it on the first try when mimicing his actions. When I tried it on my own, I couldn't get it. The good news is as soon as it's unlocked, it stays unlocked forever, so you dont have to do it every time.

They just took my money and let me go. The assistant didn't know he could do that, had to ask a manager first. The phones have a sim card in them, forgot about that, so i just kept that one aside. jailbroke immediately after I activated it so I'm not getting any vague feeling of slowness :p The 3GS still leaves the 3G in the dust anyhow.

It's actually comfortable playing games with the cable plugged in? And with the AA batteries (and their own recharger) aren't there too many pieces to keep track off?

Lockscreen info - where is it?

I can't seem to find it on cydia for the life of me.

Add this source in Cydia:

While you're at it, add this two as well

It wasn't uncomfortable for me. You can test it out by attaching a usb cable to Iphone and playing with it. Definitely, going to be helpful on trip coming up, airplane, bus, and train ride.

Question:

I just upgraded Mrs. OuterWorldVoice's original iPhone to a 3GS, leaving that old phone effectively dead, or at most an iPod Touch of some kind. Would it be possible for me to use my sim card in it and use it for just voice and texting, without a data plan?

Jailbreak and unlock it, then throw your sim card in.

i just got the griffin suction cup windshield mount from the apple store when i got the snow leopard update, and it's really great so far. it even comes with an extension if it isn't long enough. thirty bucks.

But Jailbreak it first, right? I just followed another instruction guide and got to "activate" and of course ATT knew my simcard was legit and tried to activate me into a dataplan.
