iPhone - Official Thread

So I tried to buy an iPhone the other day.

Went to the local Vodafone store to make the purchase. Things were going smoothly until the salesman asked if I was a student. When I responded yes, he then asked how much I earn. Being a student, I don't have the opportunity to work as much as I'd like, but I still do fairly well considering. In the last financial year I earnt $19.6k, which is more than enough to cover the $59/month the phone costs, but apparently for Vodafone to let me enter into a contract, I'd have to earn at least $20k/year.

Needless to say, I walked away disappointed that day.

I guess this is more of a general phone contract matter than an iPhone matter, but this seems like the appropriate place to post it.

Anyone else have any issues like this? Is it a policy exclusive to Vodafone or just an extension of Australia's terrible internet & telecommunications?

Aren't you supposed to?

I had an iPod touch before the iPhone, why the heck wouldn't I use iPhone's iPod function for all my portable music needs?

Never forget Steve's words, the iPhone is:

-phone!! zomg
-internet communications device!
-best iPod EVAR!!!11!111111111111111111

You're strange. I see people w/ a touch and a phone and I'm like...that's redundant as hell.

You are carrying them both? Why? I had a Touch, sold it and bought my iPhone.

Last night at the Texans game I ran into the "Too many iPhones in one spot" problem. When the stadium was packed in the first half, I had no internet. In the 4th when the stadium was clearing out, magically I got 3G again.

I hope not, I just bought mine. :( Wouldn't surprise me however.

You just bought an iPod touch? If you're still within the return window from wherever you bought it, return it (unless you don't care about the potential rumored upgrades, like built-in camera and possibly expanded storage space on the high end). Apple has for the past few years traditionally updated the iPod line in September, so it's not like this is exactly a surprise update.

what a weird question. of course I do. the only bad thing to say about it is the constant fight between storage for music, apps and pics/vids. Really that's my ONLY complaint about the phone. a 64GB version can't get here soon enough.

I would do it to play around with jailbreaking, but most other people might just do this for the doubled storage or maybe just laziness.

How is this dumbassery so common?

I think it's just people that don't regularly buy Apple products. Which is most people. Could be avoided with a little research, but not very many people bother when they're buying a device like the ipod touch, other than maybe testing it out to make sure it has all the features and the pricing, etc.

The "wouldn't surprise me" line about new updates implies the person is aware that they're regularly updated, though. It wouldn't take much to look up "hey when did this old shit come out" and then figure out that it's been a while and then, if the person decides to do deeper research, notices that the month September seems to keep coming up.

eh... for most technology new model years start around August and September (back to school). This is pretty common. I don't think it's "people who don't buy apple products regularly" but people who just don't get how technology is released. Hell, it took buyers probably 30+ years to realize that new car years happened around the same time (august and later) and thus if you buy a new car a model year old, buy around then, etc. The general public is just still figuring this out about most technology products.

I mean don't get me wrong.. it's pretty uninformed. I won't buy ANYTHING over $100 without putting at least a little legwork into it. I mean how pissed would I be to buy a new ipod for $200 only to see a much better ipod with more storage released a month later for the same price? pretty pissed.

Also people are generally used to the idea that if a new product is coming (even a refresh), that it will be announced MONTHS beforehand and everyone will know about its impending arrival. That, however, doesn't happen often with Apple products. Though so far you can be fairly assured that iPods update in September and iPhones in June.

Yes, everyone on the planet except you.

Why are you even doing that? It's the ultimate redundancy. The iPhone *is* your iPod now, stop carrying around two devices that do the exact same thing. That's the point of an all-in-one device.

I wouldn't single Apple out at all. People in general are just horrible consumers who do no research at all.

I'm using my iPhone for way too much...it's too powerful...TOO POWERFUL!

Just replacing my phone/mp3 player was awesome...but the addition of the TomTom app ruined my shit, as well as replacing my desire to have a DS or PSP on my all the time.

So, I moved into a new apartment and my cell phone reception is non-existent on my 3G. What can I buy/make to feed signal into my room?

If you turn off 3G, do you get decent EDGE service or do you just get neither?

Anyone have Direct TV Sunday Ticket and the Superfan Package?? Apparently you can get an app to watch all the games while on the road... any news on this? I will buy an IPHONE if this is true.

No lol, it's just the lighting of the room.

Unfortunately, this is true. As much as I appreciate how the full-body shield envelops the phone I can't get past how uncomfortable it feels to slide my index finger on the surface. The back, and how it protects the corners, is perfect; you'd certainly appreciate the rubbery feel and how much it enhances your grip on the phone. Sadly I can't say the same about the screen protector. I'm honestly thinking of taking it off now.

Part of me wants to take it off due to the few annoyingly placed lints that slipped through since I couldn't find a lint-free piece of cloth in time. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, I'm thinking of begging a friend for his second protector that came with the Bodyguardz' package (you get two of each), that is if it feels better than the current one I'm using.

Bah, I've no idea why a simple task of buying a protector film has become this complicated, it's almost not worth the trouble.

The link issue has to do with the white. I have a white iPhone, and the lint is HORRIBLE looking. I left the back of the shield on (read earlier why I don't have the front on), and it looks bad. The edges also get really dirty. You can see it pretty easily. The black iPhone has no such problems. My wife has a black one, with shield still on the front and back, and you really can't tell that it's dirty at all.

Anyway, as for people saying you can take a key to a non-shielded iPhone, you people are straight retarded. Please post a Youtube video of you doing this to your phone. I have a scratch on my iPhone from not being remotely anywhere near a key. It was in my pocket with my leather wallet, which has nothing metal on it. I have no clue where the scratch came from, and I baby my phone.

Umm... I thought that was the point of the whole thing. What do you have on there that you can't drop a couple albums and then some? I have about 1,000 songs have stuff I actually listen to on a regular basis, 18 videos (all podcasts), 28 applications (including Navigon's big ass app, and the americangreetings app which is also pretty large and in charge), 980 photos (wallpaper), and 3.2 GB free for more tunes if I want. If I had a iPod classic, I would put my entire collection on there but still only listen to that small selection of songs, so that's pretty pointless, and if I had a Touch, I'd probably have a lot more free space since I wouldn't have the Navigon app and what have you.

I have the Navigon App. I never thought I would use GPS... I've used that shit multiple times already. It's straight ridiculous.

As for handheld gaming, I have Peggle, Tetris, Mevo, TapDefense, and Puzzle Quest. The two DS's my wife and I own are GATHERING DUST, with a brand new Chrono Trigger cartridge stuck in mine and Zelda stuck in hers. Jesus christ, these phones are ungodly. How they could ever do that, I will not begin to understand, but I have never been so attached to something electronic in all my life. It's... scary.

I know what you mean. In a way, the iPhone has SAVED me money. Why? I can NEVER look at another iPod or cellphone again. It's like the iPhone has single-handedly killed my desire to EVER buy either device again. I nearly don't bother looking.

Obviously things like the Zune HD are very intriguing, with great hardware, great music pass, and potentially great software too...but really, will I forego the iPhone for it? I don't think I'd carry around an iPhone AND a Zune HD. (of course it's moot since Zune doesn't exist outside of US, and it won't sync with macs anyway).

I don't see any phone or device on the market right now that remotely interests me either, but a ZunePhone would fit the bill if it ever came out. Obviously, the games that I've bought are a big deterrent, but my wife would likely still have her iPhone. Some of the Apple limitations still annoy me, but there's no guarantee that the hypothetical ZunePhone would fix the issues I have like the lack of multitasking, low battery life, closed system, one computer sync, and iTunes. iTunes plain old sucks, and I have a badass computer. It runs slow, looks ugly as a media player, and of course abides by the limitations of library sharing and syncing. I prefer the Zune software.

My girlfriend has been looking for a 3GS for two weeks with no luck. She's been told that stores will receive units mid-september. Is that normal?

PS: We're in Oviedo, a small city in the north of Spain.

Ya. That's the problem, there are loads of issues with how Apple handles the iPhone (obviously nothing deal breaking), but the rest of the Phone is so damned good, it's like the iPhone has a monopoly on ME.

Interestingly, none of the things you have issues with are things I have issues with. Multitasking is not important to me (at the moment, when tech and battery life are able to utilise it properly, then I'll change), battery life in my use is fine, the closed system has its advantages, I only use one computer, and I like iTunes.

My main problem with the phone is that I have my home computer, a laptop, and my work computer. I want to be able to purchase a song on any of those computers and load it up on my phone. I want to be able to dl a video on any of those and load it to my phone. If I'm interested in a game or app, and it's over 10mb, I want to be able to dl it at any of the computers I use regularly and load it up on my phone.

Most of my issues have to do with being at work all day. I tried making my work computer the main one, but I'd run into the same problems when I was at home on weekdays or on weekends and I wanted to do any of the above.

Why not uh, buy them from the iPhone?

They cost more on iTunes. And even if I bought them on the phone at work, I can't listen to them though my pc speakers until I go home, sync the iPhone with iTunes at home, open up the Zune software, transfer the song to the Zune, drag the Zune to work and transfer the file back on to my work computer.

Ok, I know there was just a lot of arguing about iPhone cases in the previous few pages; however, I'm going to ask this question anyway. If you are against putting your iPhone in a case, you need not respond.

I saw someone recommend the SwitchEasy Rebel in a previous post. It looks like I'm going to pull the trigger on this case. Can anyone who already has one tell me how the colors actually look in person? I'm thinking I'll probably just get black, but wanted to check and see if anyone who had a Rebel had some input.

Also, if someone has a different case recommendation, I'd love to hear it! :D There are soooo many different iPhone accessories out there.

Anyone here using Composite or Component Cables for their iphones? I have an ipod touch and it looks like the only cables that work with the latest firmware are the official ones for $49.99. I guess knockoffs have been locked out? Trying to find them cheaper, buying cables for that much just sucks.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa Jesus, folks.

I had an 80 gig iPod before the iPhone, I don't also have a Touch.

Jeepers creepers I'm not brain dead. It was obviously a question of space. I couldn't even fit my Warp Records/Ghostly International/Sub Pop Records Master Mix Of Every Album on my iPhone is why I asked.

Anyway. I use the iPhone on my commute and my iPod at work.

I do love Genius on the fly, but I miss no-look pocket controls (volume, etc). I don't use the white headphones, as I have a good pair.

I don't own them, but I'm pretty much resigned to buying the set some day. The price is pretty depressing but it's basically either that or an AppleTV, and that still hasn't come down enough in price.

This is the best idea yet for a comic reader that I've seen on the iPhone. It doesn't just zoom in and it's not exactly the loupe function you have in other cbr/cbz readers. Instead the app analyzes the context of the tap and blows up what's important. See:

6qa3xs.png
s17uyg.png

Brilliant!

Watch a video of the app in action

Try a demo in your browser (computer or iPhone)

Get the free lite version (which for whatever stupid reason does not turn up when you search for Comic Reader Mobi in iTunes) featuring Cory Doctorow's Futuristic Tales of the Here and Now.

Buy the full app so you can read your own cbr/cbz/rar/zip/pdf files. Oh it's $15 :/

I hesitate to say it's the best comic reader on the iPhone because once you get back how cool reading comics works you'll notice that the developer doesn't seem to care about design at all. Compared the ComicZeal this Comic Reader Mobi feels and looks ugly. But... tap the word panel, omg!! I will say that Comic Book Mobi has the potential to be the best mobile comic reader. Even if you don't buy the app stop by the forums and *ahem* tell the developer to hire a graphics designer, please.
