So ordered my 3GS about a week ago and it finally shipped so excited for it.
Do you guys recommend apple care, I don't know if I should get it. $70 seems a little steep.

Buy so you won't have to worry.

you should be able to select multiple songs, get info (ctrl i), then drag a jpg into the 'artwork' field of the dialog box that pops up, instead of doing them one by one.
Yep, this is how it works.
Always awesome that people blame the software before looking to see if they are at fault. That's how it always goes, though.

Anyone know how to create an itunes store account without having to use itunes? Everytime I tell it to create an account, it just sits there saying 'Accessing itunes Store' before chucking up a 'network connection timed out' message, despite the fact that my network is working perfectly and itunes didn't even attempt to use it. Wtf? Help please, this piece of apple shit is the least hassle free phone i've ever had to set up.

*edit, never mind - I had to open up TCP/UDP ports for itunes.

*edit 2, well now I can access the store front - pity iTunes STILL won't let me create a fucking account. Please help, I just wanted to try out some damn app's, but I guess simplicity is too much to ask for when apple are involved.

So, in the iPod, how do you play the album in it's original sequence? I went through artist and album, but the order is messed up in both, even though al the tracks are there and named correctly.

set the track number correctly in itunes. also make sure all the tracks have the same disc number.

this doesn't matter on the iphone. iphone will respect disc numbers without a problem. itunes usually will also, though the current version (9.0) broke it when sorting by "album by artist" or "album by year". But if you still sort just by album then it will work also. heopfully they fix that in the next point release.

That doesn't seem to be it. Zune software picks it up in the right order, the tracks are numbered properly. Also, they were in the proper order yesterday, and now it's in some weird order, like unplayed vs played or based on the number of plays or something.

Is it part of a smart playlist? Smart playlists can be bored using 3.1 from itunes 9.

haha, welcome to hell!! They alleviated some of these stupid restrictions with home sharing, but without a way to link the work computer, you're SOL. That's why I'm considering buying a dock with speakers for work, since my iPhone is riddled with these stupid phony restrictions.

wow... lol... this sucks.. i mean I have my itouch with the same exact music on it but damn... I connected it just to charge it, thought I could get away with it. oh well.. haha

gotta pipe up here. without those "stupid phony restrictions" piracy would probably be a million times more rampant than it even is now (aka still really rampant). the thought some of you have that these files should be easily transportable and copyable with practically no effort is really quite silly. I'm against draconian DRM standards as much as the next guy, but some of you guys are acting annoyed because you can't copy these files to anywhere and everywhere you want with no issue whatsoever. If you could actually do that with the ease you're looking for, what chance would any of these artists have in making money. :\

I am okay will not being able to copy music from my iPhone, but not being able to listen to the songs on the iPhone using iTunes doesn't foster piracy and is a "stupid phony restriction".

Bullshit for various reasons:

1. Other devices allow it

2. Other Apple products allow it

3. It's been proven time and again that the people who pirate the most aren't hindered by these stupid restrictions. Only the legit consumers who purchase music legally and use the devices legally. I could jailbreak my damn phone and do this, but because I stick to the "legit" way to operate the phone, I'm the one who suffers from the restrictions. That same argument you are making about the need to obfuscate the process to make sharing more difficult in order to prevent piracy was made about DRM music, and you can see how that turned out.

Holy shit new iTunes is slow. It's been on the backing up phase of the sync for atleast 10 minutes.

I'll say it again, the backup after some upgrade is often very slow, as it rebacks up more (I guess). Mine took about 30 minutes (with a 20 minute hold at one point). Backups after that were incremental, as per usual.

New iPhone 3GS owner here...what cases do you guys recommend? I'm thinking about getting an invisibleShield to cover the whole thing and protect it from scratches, and then getting an "iBand" from Tech21 to put on when I know I'll be in situations where I might drop or otherwise damage the iPhone in any way other than scuffs and scratches.

Anyone have experience with the iBand? It looks amazing, and has some great reviews, but also has a few iffy reviews concerning access to buttons and such.

I'm also intrigued by the Incase Power Slider.

So my wife and I are wanting to finally make the iPhone jump when our current Verizon contracts expire in November. However we have a few important questions first which we'd like iPhone-GAF's opinion on:

1) What is the likelihood that Verizon or other providers will be carrying iPhone soon?

2) Are there alternative data plans to 3G which have better coverage? (we will be traveling and notice that their 3G coverage is mostly in urban areas only)

1) Not likely and definitely not soon.

2) No alternative data plans.

One other question:

If we get iPhones (and 3G) then does the 3G data plan only apply to the iPhones themselves or can the data plan be linked to other 3G-capable devices, like netbooks?

1. It's likely. I don't think AT&T has said they renewed their iPhone contract with AT&T (it expires in 2010). Plus Verizon is transferring to a 4G (LTE) network, so Apple could just bring the iPhone to Verizon without having to any major reworking.

2. Not sure. I don't know much about phones.

There's really no grounds for either side. It may go to Verizon or it may not, no one knows or has much evidence for either side. There are things like Apple seeming unhappy (for) or Verizon mandating a single Verizon store to house all apps for all operating systems (reason against). No one knows, so you can hope on the sidelines or just go get an iPhone.

1.) Don't think AT&T will give it up. I Think they'll try to renew their contract.

2.) not sure about this one.

So...is the 3G (8gb)'s battery life supposed to be abysmal when browsing/messaging/using apps? I even dipped the brightness to a little lower than 50% and I burned through half the battery in like just under an hour.

Hmm, browsing and wifi are drains, for sure, but it shouldn't be one hour.

Apps drain a lot, more or less depending on the app. 2 hours on solid gaming can be very typical.

Word Ace is a huge drainer.

Fuck, that's massively disappointing. More incentive to go swap it for the 3GS I guess, eh?

My screen is heating up like a bitch, and somehow, it appears as if the battery is dropping faster than it's charging. I mean, it was at like 30-40% (green), I started charging, and 10 minutes later, got the 20% warning.

How can this be? lol

Can one app be such a drain?

I'm not sure what you were asking exactly, but your 3G data plan with AT&T also includes Edge data service, and I'd say if you have AT&T service wherever you are there is a 99% chance that there is Edge service at minimum. I've traveled with my iPhone everywhere from Maine to Texas (and most points between) and not having at least Edge coverage was very rare.

my lockscreen is always the same

My spring board changes its back ground every few minutes or on every application close.

From what I read, it probably involve an app (process) running in background > using power > heat and not terminating correctly. You need app that shows what process is running and be able to close them one by one to see which one is causing the problem.

Hey
We recently grabbed a cheap second hand 2g off a local trade site, the seller had recently purchased it, updated to 3.0, and the phone had become un-jailbroken and he had no idea how to fix it :>
So that was all good, ran redsn0w and broke it open.

Anyhow, now we have a new problem. The phone will randomly turn off. Turning it back on, it'll work fine, and the maybe turn off again later. Besides that, the battery usually won't charge, it'll come up to a certain percentage around 50%, and then stop.

We tried draining it to zero and recharging it from scratch, and that seemed to work. The battery got up to 100%, and acted normally. But then again today it's started dying randomly again. Any ideas guys? If we need to get a replacement battery, can anyone suggest a model? Sending it back to Apple is expensive, and I don't think they offer that service in New Zealand anyway.
Thanks!

Why are you bringing Windows onto the iPhone?

Just turn it off and on again.

It's not simple as just rebooting the phone. There seems to be many people having battery issue. You can search Apple Support forum.

Has anyone seen what they are speculating for the iPhone 4G?

Multitasking

Of course this is just rumour but it's fun to speculate.

I would appreciate multi-tasking. Make it happen Apple

In Nz, to probably gets sent to Renaissance, who I think have a tech department. Either that or they farm it out to the authorised Apple repair centres.

that image came out over a year ago.

it’s not new speculation.

as for the ichat and multitasking, I suppose they could happen. but I bet ichat will come before 3rd party apps can run in the background.

Have you tried the Apple Store at Pacific Centre? They're authorized to do upgrades and (at least they used to) get stock in more than once a week.

Er, they don't need a new phone for multitasking, they can do that through a software update. Plus as others have said, that image is old.
