Silly question, but does this mean that the H.264-encoded vids will accessible to everyone, and not just Apple TV and iPhone users?

Yes. It's my understanding that all videos on YouTube will now be in h.264. So when you watch videos from your browser, that's the codec in use.

I also read some comments from iPhone testers last night that said YouTube on the iPhone looks amazing and that you won't want to watch them on your computer any more. While I find that to be overblown hyperbole, it's still good to know that the screen is living up to the hype.

USA Today: AT&T's iPhone Preparation, Testing and Release Day Info

Interesting article. Here are highlights:
* 6:00pm confirmed.
* Staying open until 10 p.m.
* "We fully expect one or more of our stores to run out of stock on the first day"
* 2,000 extra sales people hired on
* New York City, Chicago and much of California will have more units available
* If they run out, sales people will take mail orders to be shipped in 3 to 5 days
* iPhone specific plans will be announced the 29th
* "Plans will be customized for the iPhone" i.e. have some kind of data
* $50 million spent adding additional data for iPhone traffic
* Secret testing has been going on
* Technicians have logged more than 10,000 hours on the phone
* More than 5,000 hours of voice calls and near 5 gigabytes of data usage also
* They doused it with water, dropped it on concrete and bounced it off sidewalks.

Somehow I doubt it faired well in that last test. :D

I like that first one. Hopefully it will mean there are no ebay scalpers in the lines. I am really goddamn sick of that crap of people buying a hot device just to ebay, not 'cuz they want it. Eff those people. I hope Apple made enough.

Why wait until the 29th to announce the plans? I'd like to be able to fully figure out wtf I'm gonna do plan-wise at least a little bit before the phone's out. While I'm gonna be ordering online and not buying in a store it'd still be nice to have slightly better advance warning.

I agree on announcing the plan. Why wait until the very last day. I want to make my decision on the phone ahead of time, and this is the last bit of info I need to decide if I'm going to get one. I'm a little ticked that they haven't filled us in yet.

Yeah, I agree. The more tight-lipped AT&T gets about the plans, the more I worry they are planning on raping us. This quote in particular worries me:

USA Today said:
Carter says the additional fees shouldn't be a surprise. "Regardless of which device you're using today, you pay us a certain amount for (voice) minutes, and you also pay us for data units," he says. "That is also true on the iPhone."
They better not be charging for "data units". It better be unlimited or I'll be pissed.

Same here. Something like the SideKick plans from T-Mobile would be perfect as long as they don't make us bend over. I've already decided I won't go above $80/month. And even that is pushing it. If it's $70/month for something like 400 minutes and unlimited data, I'd probably jump in for sure.

While I'm gonna be ordering online and not buying in a store

Only detail not definite is whether or not Apple will carry the device on their website.

At the very least though, contact your AT&T store to have the account changes made, the reps there are commissioned, help someone out! :)

They already announced in their latest PR and earlier that they would carry it on their site. i just want to know what the price without service will be.

And the reps at my Cingular store are dicks who care mainly about making commission. i'd buy it from Apple direct before going in store. Of course, i'm more interested to see if an unlocked iPhone would accept my current Cingular sim card.

I guess you'll be waiting awhile then, eh. I read elsewhere that a lot of the iPhone's operation is so tied to AT&T's tech, that even if you bought an unlocked phone and switched the sim, there'd be a lot that wouldn't work at all or wouldn't work well. If you're going to start ticking off features from the list you get at $500/600+contract, you may as well get a different smartphone that you won't have to jury-rig to use.

New commercial, btw -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu7_hwVNhrk

Ironic it's on youtube before it's up on apple.com.

i'm on Cingular. i'll be keeping an eye on those brave few over at the Howard Forums that manage to get them to work without a new contract, though i'm not looking to buy a new phone now anyways.

Oh. Oops. I keep forgetting that Cingular = AT&T.

Nope. No one in this thread is going to get one. Absolutely no one.

Or if they did want one they probably wouldn't be reading/posting in this thread.

One of the joys of getting a new phone is its rarity, not it's ubiquity. The fact that everyone and their mother are getting one kind of takes the gloss off the iPhone for me.

Shallow, but there it is.

Yeah, because most people have $600 to just fling around on a flashy cell phone. Trust me when I say for the first year or so, you'll be one of the few people you know who has one.

I don't know dude, Americans will spend the money if they really really like something. And apparently, 9% of all cell phones owners in the States are interested in one, this could be the next MotoRazr.

Still, I don't think you'll see a ton of them right off the bat.

I'm still here. I just picked up the PPC 6800 (MOGUL) from Sprint but I'm still curious as to how the iPhone will perform in sales and how people will perceive it after the prelaunch hype. In the end, competition is a good thing and will force others to raise the bar on their device hardware and software specs & features.

I was lucky enough to pick up my device for $399 after getting a $150 credit (even though I still have another year on my contract).

There are some options that the Mogul has that the iPhone will hopefully incorporate. One I mentioned before was the keyboard. It's a big improvement of the PPC 6700. Some others are the jog wheel and soft keys.

The hackers also have already gone to work and provided quite a few options and workarounds for the Mogul. Hopefully the iPhone will get the same treatment.

I just picked up a 2 gb micro sd card and it's TINY. I thought mini sd was small. 4 gb cards are on the horizon though. :D

I think you can pretty much give up on ever seeing the iPhone with more than one button. They went out and made that touchscreen for a reason.

Apple is about as likely to add more buttons/a KEYBOARD to iPhone as Nintendo is to give up this whole "Wiimote" pointing/waggle stuff. It ain't happening.

According to AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel, a report today that AT&T will wait until the day of iPhone’s launch to disclose rate plans for the device is inaccurate. “We will disclose before the 29th,” said Siegel, noting that customers will be able to show up at stores that day knowing how much they will be charged for both the Apple-developed hardware and AT&T’s cellular service plans. “It’s not going to be anything exotic,” Siegel told iLounge, confirming that there will be separate voice and data services components to its iPhone service plans, rather than the one-size-fits-all plans some had expected. As previously stated by both companies, and re-confirmed by Siegel, a two-year service commitment will still be required.

Only Apple users at this time. Hence, why you will stop using your computer to watch Youtube, except for the long tail of videos.

why is it that most iPod (and now iPhone) cases just look like absolute crap to me? Here you have a very elegant piece of technology...let's put it in a case that's gonna be loose-fitting, bulky piece of dung. An iSock almost seems like a better solution to me. I dunno, are holster-type cases a good idea for this sort of thing?

BTW, awesome new picture of the iPhone in the wild here. That thing really does look tiny.

dude, it's totally tiny. im suprised anyone hasn't made any side by side comparisons with the other phones out there.

anyways, the shitty case thing is old news. it's very unfortunate that you're either have to go with some ugly ass case that ruins the whole look and feel, or hope for the best.

really reminds me of condoms.

Some big news:

iLounge reports on comments by AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel which indicates that AT&T will be releasing iPhone voice and data rate plans prior to launch day (June 29th).

"We will disclose before the 29th," said Siegel, noting that customers will be able to show up at stores that day knowing how much they will be charged for both the Apple-developed hardware and AT&T¡¯s cellular service plans.
It's not going to be anything exotic"

There will reportedly be separate Voice and Data plans and a 2-year service commitment will be required.

An earlier report today claimed rate plans would not be revealed until the day of launch (June 29th)

We have heard reports that some form of announcement is expected tomorrow (Friday).

More google apps coming
"iPhone is a powerful new device and is going to be particularly good for the apps that Google is building. You should expect other announcements from the two companies over time"

New youtube commercial too

So why won't you be able to play it on your PC again?

Here's a better question: why don't you just send me a browser URL to watch the H264 Youtube videos I can watch on the AppleTV right now?

Any video that's been encoded in h.264 will display on the AppleTV, the iPhone, and your computer. Period. I don't have a browser link to any videos that have been re-encoded because I don't have an AppleTV to see what's available yet. But since the update for the device went live yesterday, anything you can now browse on your AppleTV has to be in the h.264 format.

If you truly do think that h.264 videos will only be able to be viewed by Apple users, than you're the one who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Iphone looks so ****ing slick. Makes other smart phones looks like toys. Nothing is gunna beat the look of a 3.5 inch piece of glass in style. Fingerprints aside, Iphone wins in style easily. Plastic buttons and crap on other funs looks so dull and crappy now.

Only I don't like about it so far is:

-Youtube Icon(they could have made that look slick and nice but yeah... an old TV...)
-Wished for a camera on both sides of the phone for Ichat that is bound to happen in the next generations.(I mean Japanese phones have been doin that forever now)

Maybe I'm wrong, but YouTube used to use a Flash video format to display its content...now they're gonna use H.264. So it shouldn't matter what device you're using to look at them if it can display H.264 (MPEG-4). The difference is that while your PC can view both, iPhone and AppleTV don't do Flash, so they can't view the old videos. Did I get that right?

Yup! That about sums it up.

The h.264 will only be applied to the Iphone and Apple TV if I'm correct and not computers from my understanding.

And I think I'll be getting one next week now. :D

Why wait until the 29th to announce the plans?

Same reason reviews for bad movies are held until the day of release. The plan is going to be ****ing expensive and they don't want any negative hype going into the launch. In my mind, this all but confirms a crazy-expensive iPhone plan. That's sad. I can drop $600 for the device , but a $75+ monthly plan is not going to happen.

Edit: So they say before the 29th now. They'll probably announce on the 28th...

I can't see the unlimited data plan for edge being more than 20-30 dollars. . .that sounds pretty decent, right?

What do unlimited edge plans go for now?

EDIT: I'd put the bare minimum for unlimited data (unlimited data + minimal voice) at 60 bucks. I don't think AT&T has currently merged cell text messages with data plans yet, so text messages may cost a lil more, if you want em.

Nope. Not correct. All videos are going to h.264. They're going through the back catalog now, and any new uploads will be converted automatically.

You post in this thread a lotttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt.

Just be glad that Oblivion isn't playable on the iPhone. :lol

An unlimited Sidekick plan costs $30, that's data only. T-Mobile rock-bottom plan is $30 (300 minutes), and $40 for 1000 minutes, both unlimited nights/weekends. So a Sidekick with data would set you back at least $60 a month.

AT&T's cheapest voice plan is $40 per month (450 minutes + 5000 nights/weekends). Their cheapest data plan is $35 for a Personal Blackberry plan (unlimited data). They also have a $20 plan for "smartphones" with unlimited data. My guess would be that the iPhone is going to qualify as more than a "smartphone" seeing as they included a whole bunch of Nokia and Treo devices under their "blackberry" plans.

So, in total you're looking at $75 minimum... probably. I'm not sure I can do that. $35 for Unlimited EDGE data seems like such a waste when I'm going to be in the vicinity of wi-fi most of the time, and not on the EDGE network. You obviously won't need a data plan if you're using a wi-fi signal. The problem is, that without the data plan you're SOL when not near a wi-fi signal, which nixes the ability to google map things from anywhere, or get your email anywhere...

Also, why doesn't this thing include IM, I mean really... using AIM via txt is possible but why can't they just write AIM hooks directly into the iPhone. It seems stupid to me.

While I think you are right as far as looking at the numbers and making an educated guess, I am guessing that they are going to cut iPhone owners at least a bit of a deal, considering the price of the phone itself.

Also, why doesn't this thing include IM, I mean really... using AIM via txt is possible but why can't they just write AIM hooks directly into the iPhone. It seems stupid to me.

Someone should be able to write a webapp to get you into AIM/MSN. It might not be there day 1, but it will happen. That would really eliminate the problem of paying for text messaging. . .at least for me. Just get everyone to use IM.

As for why it doesn't include IM, I bet it's just part of the Apple + AT&T deal. Including data-based IM would cut into text message plan deal sales.

Also reportedly nixes visual voicemail (just what I read somewhere else).

You have texting and e-mail. While I'd like IM too, I dunno that I'd have much use for it with access to the other two.

It's sad, because if I'm paying for "unlimited data" then I should be able to use that data to send IMs. And actually, somebody has already written a web app for it. It showed up on Digg a few days ago. I'm hoping for a Twitter app to show up soon.

As for them cutting a break, we can only hope so. But, with the inclusion of the "revolutionary" visual voicemail... who knows. They might try to justify it with something along the lines of "A blackberry with voice and data costs $75. We're giving you that price, and throwing in Visual Voicemail 'for free'."

SuperPac said:

That's you. I'm just wondering, how old are you? To me it's quite apparent that people who aren't yet 21 are addicted to text messages because the technology blew up when they were teens. I'm 23, which isn't much older, but the gap is apparently. When I was younger, IM was the big thing. So, instead of being addicted to texting, I'm hooked on IM.

That's just me though, you could be a totally different story.

I already saw a Twitter App somewhere for the iPhone. You can bet there will be at least one by launch or sooner.

My guess is that IM will come later in an update. I think you'll see iChat on there. Only problem with that for me is I have more contacts on Yahoo and don't use AIM that much. It's too bad we don't get true apps, as an Adium client would rock.
