that last video is perfect.

can you guys imagine what life will be like after using it for the first 2 days.

I'd imagine quite the same as it is now, except I'll be out $600, out God knows how much more after 24 months of iPhone plan charges, and constantly worried about even taking it out in public in fear that I'll be mugged for the damned thing.

So: out a decent chunk of cash and paranoid.

Irony-Age: i lost my cell phone (Moto SLVR) tonight as i bought a bluetooth adapter i was going to use to sync it with my computer. It's not even the nicest phone out there, but i liked it. i can't imagine the feeling of losing an iPhone.

Heh, between my PPC, my iPod, whatever camera I have with me at the time, my voice recorder, my keys, and my pen, I am always paranoid about forgetting shit somewhere. Luckily, it's like my paranoia seems to have trained me well since I never lose any of my gadgetry--although I probably just jinxed myself.

Ugh, looks like I'll be making the plunge. 500 dollars :(

My RAZR I've had for 2 years got all glitchy tonight and the buttons won't work anymore, and my iPod Nano is getting pretty worn by this point, so **** it, I want an iPhone.

That's some pretty spectacular timing, are you sure you're just not reaching for some kind of rationalization?

I'm the same way. Always paranoid, but I have a pretty solid system for checking everything.

It just gets bad when I don't bring certain things. I'll be patting my left pocket feeling for my BT headset, getting oh so worried when all I hear is the jangle of my keys, only to remember I didn't bring that out today. So much worse when I have my camera bag, sling pack with my MBP, whatever handheld stuff... It's a nightmare. Literally, it's one of my greatest nightmares. :lol

Yeah, I was really surprised at the timing, but I can't even make calls with it now.

Okay so.. Are there any deals on the iPhone? Any at all, so that maybe you can get it for.. I dunno, a lower price? Heh.

I ****ing want one.

But $500 for a phone is eeeek. May just stick with my Sidekick 3.

I take that as a no. :[

It wasn't a dumb question though. Lots of times phones have special deals depending on which plan you get. I dunno what the deal is with that in terms of the iPhone.

It's an Apple product. The deal, as always, is "You pay the price we printed on the label. kthxbye."

It really sounds like I should do a youtube video showing what current phones can do, as it seems like a lot of people are misguided again. This is just as bad as the Sony PR guy saying the PS3 is better than the Wii because it can browse photos.

The difference is the iPhone seems user-friendly in ways other devices aren't, currently. It's great that your phone and other phones available do what the iPhone does. Those devices don't look as friendly as iPhone nor do they look as easy to use. I'm sure they ARE once you "figure it out" and put up with their interfaces. But just as other MP3 players offer more/better features than the iPod, I'm not interested in those.

And other phones do not peg their advertising campaigns on how easy they are to use and do everything.

Well, it doesn't really do everything. In fact, it can be reasonably argued that the lack of MMS, IM, 3G and an open development platform means it does a bit less.

i'm coming to the realization that Motorolas are crap. MY SLVR's speaker went from working perfectly, to working but with static, to not working at all. Then it miraculously began working again. It's locked up numerous times, especially when using the camera.

****, life is so bloody ironic sometimes. And no, i'm not getting an iPhone. :)

Sure. Personally, I could not care less it doesn't do any of those things. My iPod doesn't have an FM radio or wifi built-in either but I'm not dropping everything to go buy a Zune.

Man, how I wish the iPod did have an FM radio.

For the Halo heads some great pics to use that you really don't have to configure for the Iphone since they are already near that size at this thread.

Oh yeah, I have a couple of questions.

Right now I'm still on my parent's familyshare plan, which has upgrades on 2 of the phones, and I can always open a new line for 10 bucks a month on that plan if I have to, but will Cingular not allow iPhones on Familyshare? I remember Verizon limiting Moto Q's to single line plans only and I don't really feel like going on my own plan because I would barely use any minutes (almost everyone i know is on cing).

Also, I haven't really been following stuff too much, but are data plans mandatory? cause I just want WiFi and expensive dialup on a phone is useless.

...shit I know there's some other stuff I'm wondering about but I can't think of any right now.

They haven't said crap about plans, familyshare, any of that. It's expected that they will next week, prior to the 29th. Some have said a data plan is required, others say it's required at sign-up but you can cancel it. Really though, there's no "official" info on any of it.

Dear lord... I know I want one...

I feel like I would be such a tool and sheep though if I buy one. I know its all hype... but I do need a phone and internet on the go is ****ing awesome...

hrm

anybody buying this online?

the video guide just made me want to buy one on day one.....and i might actualy do that.....

Funny you should say that. On me at any one time, I can have as much as:
My 12" PB (plus accessories - charger, mouse etc.)
My Phone
My camera (which happens to be a dSLR and I tend to carry all my lenses with it)
My iPod (30G)
and possibly my DS (and some spare games).

You would think I'd be all for gadget convergence! But seeing as I tend to carry so much, I wonder if I'd welcome an iPhone, or just get annoyed how it doesn't really replace any of my other gadgets, except possibly my phone.

Also makes me wonder why I carry all this, and if anyone else thinks that modern times dictates we have at least a cell phone, music player and camera on our persons at all times. All this stuff is supposed to make life more efficient and convenient, but sometimes I wonder...

Also, I have my new phone, and someone pointed out how the top half looks suspisciously like an iPhone (at least in style, with the metal on black and so forth):

I thought he was crazy, but when I examined it more closely, I kind of see a resemblance.

Me, probably. I'm gonna be out of town on the 29th for a convention. :'( Waiting in line all day or even a couple hours is not an option, so I'll probably order online and hope delivery is quick so it'll be waiting for me when I get home. Unless the rumor from two weeks ago is right and they're sitting on three million of them to sell from day one and the stores don't sell out immediately.

Same here. And it's not a slam on the iPhone either. Convergence devices are never great at anything aside from the task they are designed. Even if my 8525 (or iPhone) had a 10MP phone with all the fixins, it would still be inadequate because it wasn't the proper shape for a telephone. Even the finest cell phone-sized keyboards aren't GREAT for typing. Sure, they might be great for a cell phone keypad, but they are never really that good.

I can understand that lots of people are happy with the convergence functionality of iPhones and other high end phones, but for me, a person spoiled by round-the-board high end functionality from multiple devices, there's really no one replacement.

It's not modern times at all. If cell phones existed 100 years ago they would be just as popular as they are now. Music players, well, I'm into music. If I didn't have an iPod I would probably be going over bars in my head anyway. My cameras? Well, it's one of my big hobbies, and I like to think that I'm always prepared for those insane "pic or it didn't happen" moments. Society and times don't dictate that I make myself into a Stephensonian gargoyle, my personal interests do.

Also, my pen is certainly not a device confined to this area and I still carry it everywhere with me. People have always kept what's important close to them, at least when they could. Now it is just more convenient.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I didn't mean that it was modern times themselves as a cause of making us want this stuff - yeah, the technology is just a real boon. What I meant was that modern times comes funkier tech, and often, smaller and more affordable tech. Cellphones have become as staple an item as wallet and keys. It's a sign of the times themselves - another facet of modern western society that we can communicate with any of our peers at practically any moment from any place.

Don't US carriers offer insurance?

Here in the UK, more or less every carrier has an insurance package that replaces any loss of your phone for about £5 ($10) a month.

They do, yes. But word is AT&T will not offer insurance on the iPhone. (Source) So if you lose it, you're up feces creek without paddle or innertube.

They do, but i didn't get it on mine.

In any case, i just deactivated the phone. Guess i'll see what i can get on eBay.

Confirmed my trip to San Fran to grab a jesus phone on Friday, thinking of maybe heading to
Tiburon for a better chance to get one... since my plane is landing on Friday at 1.30PM.
Flagshipstore will probably be chaos by then.

Edit: scratch that. Touchscreen typing is bad.

Anything will be an upgrade from pressing 7 four times to get to S, overshooting it by accident then having to go back 'round. I'm sure loads of people will dislike it at first, definitely.

That's why there's T9. :)

i prefer RIM's Suretype found in the Blackberry Pearls, which places 2 letters per button. i think this would be incredible for the iPhone.

Ya know I don't think in all these pages of what the iPhone does/doesn't do, no one's brought up the fact that the iPhone doesn't do...GAMES (yet). This is another "I don't care" for me, as the only games I ever had on my cell phone were free and they've long been deleted.

I'm watching the "Guided Tour" video now. Pretty cool so far, but one rumor can be put to rest. The Sim Slot still seems to be in place on top of the phone.

I won't buy an iPhone without theft insurance. Period.

I will take it pretty much for granted to have at least 4 nicked during the course of the year.

There a private computer insurance companies that will probably cover them for relatively little.

My MacBook Pro is covered from every conceivable screw up for about £70 a year.

so is SuperPac going to contridict anything that comes up in this thread negative to justify his purchase? It's sure looking that way folks, stay tuned.

Yay. My dad is taking me to this Official Apple iPhone release party in the Exploratorium in San Francisco for launch. I'm hella pumped! Lots of picture will follow.
