Oh, almost forgot - the phone itself is pretty nice, too :-)

Contrary to popular bullshit making a call is not a byzantine experience. It's one button (the one that says "phone" on the home screen) to start dialing or go to your contacts list, depending on how you've got it set up. I have it set to go to Favorites, which is a really handy little feature that lets me easily find the people I'm most likely to want to call without having to scroll through the entire list.

Oh really nice ringtones too. I recommend "Strum".

Threadsaving in the making!
Thx, looks absolutely awesome.

Are they selling headphone adapters? The recessed headphone port is a bit problematic for my normal earphones.

My iPod music seems to stop playing randomly while I'm on the browser. Am I pressing something by accident?

Anywho. Product is pure sex. :D

Thanks for the continued impressions guys. It's making my wait for my phone harder, but it's nice to see that it has really lived up to the hype. I can't wait to get my hands on it, but that "2-4 weeks" delivery time is going to be very long indeed. Please just tell me you're being conservative in your estimates Apple! :D

So looks like every AT&T store was a complete disaster, I'm glad it wasn't just the one near me. There's gonna be a lot of angry people. .

Not for me. I got in line at 5:55 PM, and the only issue was the slow pace of people buying phones. Took me about 45 minutes altogether, and we were about 25th in line.

Apparently so yes, a friend of mine says he's going out to pick one up today. Check the Apple store.

How in the world would you play SNES games (Or any real games, for that matter) via touchscreen?

I actually played Tomb Raider via touch screen on my PDA. It's possible.

the google maps app is my favorite. so slick... if you zoom into your neighborhood then search for 'gamestop' it put little pins in all the locations then you can highlight the store and then click the phone number to dail. Gonna save me alot of time on release days hunting for games :D

The Mail app is also killer.

Mine seems a bit reluctant to hop in my wifi at home. Seem to love edge. :lol I have to go to settings and tell it to get on my hotspot :(

The camera is suprising good as long as there is enough light.

I am really impressed with the virtual keyboard. It is way better than I thought it would be.

Call quality is good, not great. The speakers are not as loud or as good as the ones in my walkman w600i, but that is to be expected. The headphones are decent but nothing extraordinary. I need to see if my good ones will fit.

I havent tried .pdf or excel viewing, not exactly sure how to get them on there! gonna go play some more :D

Like I said later, on screen buttons with the game in native res in between. It's possible, but relies on good response time from the on screen buttons.

Pfft, whatever, could work :P

No one was surprised I got in line?

I didn't get one, FYI.

U-District? Me and Mrs Stinkles drove over about 11:30pm last night. Place was full, mostly folks playing with it. She walked up, asked for an 8 gig, out we walked. No fuss. No waiting.

I think you're looking at things the wrong way, Yixian. Why wait to get an iphone when having one will almost certainly guarantee that a woman will touch you?

Is she as pleased as everyone here seems to be? Also, seeing how absurdly good the iPhone is makes me jealous, more than I thought it would.

I went to my local apple store today to buy a power adapter for my powerbook and seen this iPhone so small.... this thing hit me hard its pure sex so I have to get one by the end of the month and the monthly plans sold me :D

She is a chick.

"Aren't you going to open it?"

"Nah, I will open it tomorrow after brunch maybe."

Dammit, the more I read, the more I feel like getting out of my Sprint contract and getting a iPhone...:(

Must....Be....Strong

The webpage viewing looks reeeeaaally good. Out of everything, this is where apple just bitchslapped the competition the most to me. How many years has Microsoft been making mobile browsers....and even now, all they got is the beta DeepFish app that still is not available to the public yet and not fully featured. Opera is equally behind. Besides the flash/java handling, safari owns all in the mobile world.

Huh?
Did you actually think Apple would have given you an easy to replace battery for a change on one of their aesthetics over everything devices? :lol

Here are more in-depth impressions I wrote for my blog. I didn't post the introduction since it repeats information I've said in this thread already.

Portrait & Landscape
You can look at the iPhone in portrait or landscape mode. 85% of the time, when you turn the iPhone, the image will rotate appropriately. Another 15% of the time, it'll either take a few seconds or not at all realize it was turned. Sounds a bit problematic, but the problem fixes itself after awhile. Hopefully future firmware upgrades make this even more seamless.

Slide to Unlock
I like this feature. It seems a bit intrusive to have to do it a lot, but it really saves the battery life and prevents mishaps from happening. The timing of the lock can be set, too. I keep it at the default 1 minute mark.

Safari
The web browser loads large pages reasonably fast on WiFi. It's pretty easy to figure out where to tap your finger to bring up the options screen for going back or forward a page, entering a new URL or opening up a new tab. The screen quality's also simply amazing, even better than the PSP's screen if you ask me. Even when you try to view as much of a web page as possible, the text is very clear and readable; it looks even better when you zoom in. As far as non-flash content goes, the internet really works well. But flash is pretty important, so hopefully Apple adds that functionality in at some point.

iPod
The iPod functionality is similar to what we know about the iPod now, but the touch screen on the iPhone really makes the click wheel seem rather outdated and clunky, at least at the expense of having a big screen like this. It's so easy to just scroll through the playlists and song files and pick your song. Unfortunately, the recessed headphone port means I'm stuck using the standard iPod earbuds until I figure out where they sell adaptors, or find the flurry of them I received from Apple in 2005 when they couldn't understand what I needed to fix back then. Sound quality on the standard earbuds isn't too bad either way. They modified the earbuds so there's this thick, white piece of rubber that allows music to be paused. Apparently the thing doubles as a headset. I love seeing all the album art, and beyond that, the iPhone turns its screen off automatically after one minute, conserving battery and allowing you to enjoy your music. Unfortunately though the playlists on the iPhone apparently seem to be tied to playlists, so you can't yet just drag individual music files or create a playlist on the phone itself; it has to be done through iTunes on your Mac/PC.

Photos
Synced one folder in my pictures album, photos of my Japan trip in 2005 (only folder that seemed appropriate on my old PowerBook; my MacBook comes back Tuesday). Scrolling through the thumbnails of photos was again an easy process, and the screen really makes the photos shine bright. You can also sync it with iPhoto, but I never organized it on my Mac, so I can't test it out, but it should be as reliable as syncing via folders.

Contacts
What I DID do on the Mac side was set up my Address Book to sync with the Contacts on the iPhone. Worked like a charm, so all the phone numbers I had on hand on this PowerBook and my old cellphone are now painlessly transferred to my iPhone. I shall transfer the rest from my MacBook next week.

YouTube
I managed to get a video playing, and Youtube's recent H.264 undertaking really proves beneficial as far as video quality goes. Unfortunately my hotel's WiFi is a bit unreliable, so the video stopped meaningfully loading only after a minute. Still, the iPhone looks like it'll playback Youtube like a champ on WiFi.

Mail
After a slight hiccup, I got the iPhone to sync up with my Gmail and detected my mail just fine, except now this morning Mail hasn't reflected anything I received this morning. Probably again due to the unreliable hotel WiFi, but it might be a problem with the phone itself too. Will need more time on this one.

Phone
Dialing and sending text messages is easy. I'm still pressing the wrong keys on the virtual keypad, but I've gotten much better in the last few hours. Text messages look like iChat conversations now, which is quite interesting and easy to follow. The phone's sound quality isn't really all that great, but it's not bad either. Besides dialing, I can simply look up my Contacts and just press someone's name. Very simple and intuitive.

Overall, I'm impressed. Apple's done really well here, and the quality of the phone can only go up in the future (and down in price). It's a bit disappointing how we can't seem to be able to manage single photos or song files; I also fear the speed of the AT&T EDGE network I have yet to try. But the first day with the product has left a pretty good taste.

Anybody want toast? :D

Comparison pics with my old RAZR I'm selling today to friend for 60 bucks. The Iphone is hella smaller than I thought it would be! And skinny too!

MS wants you to move up to UMPCs for "real internet" and not their Windows Mobile phones. This is because no WM phone OEM are willing to stick gigs of Nandflash into their devices to allow for such browser. OS footprint for iPhone vs. WM phone is like a Semi truck vs a Yugo.

I think the "real internet" part of the iPhone will be the most outclassed part in shortest time since "real internet" without flash website support is more like "real internet" from the year 2000 instead of 2007.

If I wanted tiny "real internet" device right now and was willing to spend the money, I'd choose something like the OQO model 2, which isn't much bigger than the iPhone (4.5"x2.4"x.46" vs 5.6"x3.3"x1.0"). You get 800x480 LCD, real X86 processor, actual full Windows instead of OSX lite, built in EVDO rev A, and real browsers that supports flash and everything else "real internet" demands in 2007. It's $2000, but you get a full PC that can do everything except high end 3D gaming. And that's based on 2006 tech.

By next year, you will have the same kind of experience but for UMPCs that are closer to $1000 with the coming of the Menlow platform and the Silverthorne processor from Intel. Now ask yourself: $600 for a PDA+ or $1000 for a real PC not much bigger? I'd choose the latter in a heartbeat, and have a real cheap phone with it instead of having a iPod, phone, gimped internet tablet in one device that shares the same battery that you can't swap.

I'm pretty sure Verizon supports GSM as well. Only Sprint is CDMA-only now, and that's why they often get the cool phones last.

I'm not aware of any major deployment in Verizon's network that is GSM and intended to be that way. Even the ones they purchase they migrate to CDMA. Verizon has such a considerable investment in CDMA that I can't imagine them walking away from it and changing all their towers any time soon.

Oh Wow, I want one of those.

I'll make you a bet, Shog. I bet that the iphone will sell more in it's first year than that mini pc doohickey will sell over the course of it's life. And I'll WIN!

u and me both brother.

It needs to be able to fold in clamshell style though like a Tablet PC to be save the screen. But yeah, I'm definitely getting one of those.

Mini PC doohickey is not a single device, it's a platform. So you are betting that the first year sales of iPhone will be greater than the UMPC class for it's lifespan of next 20+ years? Good luck with that.

iPhone is a stepping stone for Apple. UMPCs are the future. UMPCs will do everything you ask for now and much more you don't know you want yet. 10 years from now the argument will be who does UMPCs better: Apple or MS and the PC OEMs.

Anyone know if they are demoing these things at the apple store or at&t stores? If not, when will I be able to just walk in and play with one?

Saw them on display at an AT&T store and have heard similar stories for the Apple Store. So give them a shot.

i was thinking of buying one but it would probably get stolen or i'd get robbed in a month after buying it, lol.

So apart from the activation issues, are any of you seeing any flaws that don't look like they could be fixed with a software upgrade? I'm talking about things like first run iPod Nano's being scratch magnets (iPhone obviously isn't), Macbook Pro heat issues, Macbook discoloration, etc. I really want one but I'm wary of first-off-the-factory-line Apple products.
