I've been playing with my iPhone and it really is amazing. However, I'm a bit annoyed that I can't seem to pick and choose my music that I want on the thing. It seems to be all or nothing. and selecting various podcasts or playlists. Is there away to remove the music that you don't want or just add the music you do?

I just create an iPhone playlist and sync to that one playlist.

only until 2009, isn't it?

I'm stuck in a verizon plan as well, but iphone looks pretty damned tempting.

This works out pretty good then, cause my plan last till this time in 2009.

I don't really care right now, I quite like my VX9400 LG model. Does everything I want to be able to do at the time.

Tonight @ 6:00 is the big Apple iPhone release party in San Francisco, so I'll take lots of pictures and hopefully score myself an 8 gig. I played with one today, and it's so damn amazing. Probably the coolest device ever invented. I walked away feeling like I just ****ed around with the future. Videos look great, the keyboard IS FINE, the web... oh man, surfing is the bomb. I was surprised that Apple actually had iPhones set up to call someone right in the store. Long distance calls FTW. Making a conference call is super easy and fun, and the iPod functionality is win. I give the thing a 9.0/10 EDGE sucked, but when 3G rolls out, this thing will be a monster.

Heh. My sister and brother-in-law are going to that, and I got volunteered to babysit my niece. Maybe they can bring me back an iPhone or something for my troubles.

I'd guess Spring 2008 at the earliest. From what's happened with iPods and other products, I'm under the impression that a 9 month turnaround is about as fast as we'll see. Maybe some a little more knowledgeable than me can clarify a bit, though.

3G iPhone for Europe to be announced Monday?

http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/29/3g-iphone-for-europe-to-be-announced-monday/

Best of all for Europeans, the announcement expected on Monday will be 3G. That's right, while you're queuing up for EDGE data, Europeans might be unwrapping an HSDPA iPhone in a 4-way press release. Here's the rub, bub: do you really think Apple will provide Europe a 3G iPhone before the end of the year and not release it in the US at the same time? Now the tough choice: stand in line for your 2.5G iPhone or wait and see what happens on Monday with this rumor (and we repeat, it's just rumor at this point).

:D

In my opinion, UMPCs are a joke because of the operating system. I think you need an OS specifically designed for a smaller device. Just throwing Windows on these things is just stupid.

That's where Apple has the step here. They will be able to continue to evolve the iPhone OS overtime and make it a great OS to use on smaller devices.

Really, for 90% of people out there, they don't need something like a UMPC. Most people don't want to be carrying around a full featured OS like Windows in their pocket. I think something more in the direction of the iPhone's OS X lite is ample enough for the time you are away from your computer.

Oh... Really..

How fast is the internet browser on a page like neogaf?

its fairly quick but I wouldn't say 'fast' I might disable avatars. Kind of sucks you can't save any images from the browser or emails. My brother emailed me his self portrait but I couldn't use it for his contact picture :(

edit: it needs an F5 button :lol is there some way to refresh without scrolling to the top of the page?

30-60GB storage and lower price by $100 and I'll bite.

Or I'll just bit on a regular iPod with the same interface - would be nice if they kept the wifi, email, and browser functionality though in the regular iPod for those that don't really need it as a phone.

At this point in time, it's one or the other on those conditions considering NAND memory of that size is still rather expensive and would add to the price, not detract. I also doubt Apple will move to HDD-based iPhones any time soon, if ever, considering that would introduce potential reliability problems, size increases, and that larger capacity HDD-based devices would probably be better suited to a touchscreen "pure" iPod.

Played with one in the store last night.

Overall, I was pretty impressed that it worked, but that was hardly the take-home observation:

1. When the employee was showing people how to dial a number, as in, 0-9, hitting numbers on an otherwise blank screen, a whole crowd of people were giddily oohing and ahhing. It's like I was witnessing people literally rationalizing their excitement on-the-fly as if this were the first number-dialing device ever. Everyone else there was staring at the thing like it was a relic that had been taken off the cross while Jesus was still swinging on it. They were literally beaming, I wish I had taken the picture of the bald guy in front, I swear I've seen that face on fathers watching their son's head's crown.

2. Everyone wanted to buy one until they found out they still had stock. The big news was obviously that each Apple store was allotted 1500~ units and each AT&T store a paltry 60 or so. There's no way that the AT&T brass are thrilled, but product availability control was certainly one of the initial terms. Anyway, everyone at 10pm was marching in the store "where are the iPhones!" and when the staffer showed them the hundreds of boxes along the back, they quieted down and slipped over to the demo units, obviously gun shy.

3. A ton of normies were buying it. Non-wealthy people, moms, as many minorities as whites it seemed. One mother of a 3-year-old interviewed on NPR in Columbus said it was their FIRST CELL PHONE, that the iPhone just seemed to do right what other cell phones had done wrong. Sounds like Apple is nailing that disenfranchised normie demographic way ahead of schedule.

4. The thing is slick and responsive, but there's absolutely no surprises or easter eggs thanks to the deluge of video coverage Apple themselves provided. It was great for hyping people and educating us, but there isn't really a "wow" feature to the thing.

5. Typing with two hands is a breeze if you have pointy fingers and can orient them to be more precise. Trusting the space bar is great, but when typing a URL be sure to add the ****er to a favorites list, because there is just no way anything is going to help you there.

If it did video conferencing or had enough space on it to replace my iPod, then I'd consider investing in one. But until then, it's just a really ****ing awesome phone and nothing more.

Can't you work with it just like a regular iPod? Set it to manual syncing for music and drag over or remove what you want? I can't imagine they'd give the iPhone music management worse than what's standard on the iPod.

I got to play around for a bit with one today, and... I really shouldn't have. Now I want one really bad. For all of the negative talk about the keyboard, for my first time ever using it, I had far fewer problems than I was expecting to. Still had a few issues here and there, but nothing that wouldn't be worked out after using one for a while.

My biggest problem, actually, was figuring out how to get out of certain things - like video watching - without hitting the home button to completely drop out of the iPod section. I also couldn't seem to figure out how to tell the onscreen controls to get out of the way once I was done with them, without waiting the far too long amount of time it took them to automatically re-hide.

I don't have an iPhone (yet), but I've prepared a list in advance. I used Smart Playlists to do it. I am tagging songs I DON'T want with "nophone" in the comment section. The Smart Playlist includes all songs without that tag. I think it's a lot easier than dragging songs on to a playlist. It's easier to micro manage this way.

It made more sense to do it this way because then I have a list with everything, and it's really easy to take things off until I get down to an amount that will fit. It would have been a bitch to start with a blank playlist and add stuff to it, checking the size each time.

How long do you think it'll take for this phone to drop to $299 or less? I really, really want one but $499 is too much for a phone.

Hahahaha, a long time. Think of it like a game console. It'll be at least a year before they cut even $100 off of it.

2-3 years, I'd say, but it's anyone's guess. If the iPod is any indication, Apple will gradually roll out more and more model variations, the competition will thicken, and they'll have a better handle on the manufacturing side of things, all of which should take down the price.

I really don't understand the hype for iphone. It does nothing new at all as far as I know. If I'm wrong, please correct me.
*puts up massive flame shield*

What the hell do you consider 'new'? Giving you a blowjob? Transforming into something else? Ivce read this line repeated ad nauseum (mostly by what I assume to be trolls/apple-bashers) and I could never, ever comprehend it. What should iPhone do that you would consider 'new'? Hypothetically, of course. Nevermind the whole interface and input method is pretty much revolutionary, along with the OS and visual capabilities, but prove you're not trolling and give some realistic suggestions as to what this device would need to have for you to be impressed by it.

When the two year contract is up and the next generation iPhone is out (I'm assuming), how will that work? I'm gonna have to throw down another $500 for the newest version and eBay this one?

Can you eBay this phone even after using it for 2 years?

Or sync to any number of specific playlists.

Or tell iTunes to sync only checked songs, and ucheck everything you don't want on the iPhone.

Same goes for iPods.

Do the Apple Stores have AppleCare for the iPhone yet?

Not yet, from the online Apple Store:

AppleCare Protection Plan

For $69, the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone provides an additional year of hardware repair coverage, including coverage for the iPhone battery.

The AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone will be available in July. Customers can purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime during the iPhone one-year limited warranty.

Isn't the iPod AppleCare two years?

I don't know about the stores (probably) but it appears you can get Applecare on the website for $69. Starting in July, tho, and you can purchase it anytime during the one year warranty. Not too shabby!

Thanks, didn't see that earlier.

It is indeed a good deal. My brother just replaced a first gen iPod nano battery for a similar price. Another year of warranty doesn't hurt.

this is too much! how long will US Wireless be behind?

I wonder if the iPhone can even compete in Japan without some major upgrades?

I think we can count on the iPhone having some Japanese friendly features, such as being able to use your phone to go through ticket gates in the subway, or something. Apple's rumored mini-sized MacBook seems to be a response to Apple's weak performance in Japan over the last several years. Don't see why the iPhone wouldn't be any different.

Nope. Doesn't work like that and it's kind of annoying. But using the playlist thing worked fine. Wish I could just drag and drop stuff like on my Nano though.

I dunno if it's a problem with my reception or what, but the voice quality is lacking imo... voice mail volume sounds really low for example, even on the speaker. My music and ring tones play much much louder... am I missing a secret volume control, or is everyone else having the same experience?

Shit, I noticed that voicemail issue also. I hope Apple fixes all this minor stuff soon.

I just did a select all on my library and unchecked everything. Then I checked the stuff I wanted on the phone and selected "only sync checked items" for the phone. Now my iPod gets everything and the phone gets the checked stuff.
