keyboard only allows one key at a time.

I tried the zoom, which is the only other thing I remember that uses the multitouch. If you start zooming with two fingers, then add a third, it is recognised, but seems to forget the second finger. So it seems like it can detect more but is only tracking two.

I couldn't hit one duck.

C'mon native apps. Has anyone tried hacking apps onto their phone? I've only done ringtones because it's a hell of a lot easier (iFuntastic) and apps require jailbreak, SSH, etc...

Countdown begins!!!! I'm getting one next month:

Very dumb, stupid ass, NOOB question, but does can you transfer your existing MP3s off your HD to the Iphone, or can you only transfer what you purchase off Itunes? Also, whats the best plan to go with?

It's a common misconception that only iTunes purchased music will play on iPods/iPhones. The iPhone can play any MP3, AAC, or MP4 file you have regardless of where you got it. It does not play WMA and definitely not DRMed WMA files. As for which plan is best depends on how much talk-time you need.

Since the thread has been bumped, here are a few new iPhone web apps:

Meebo: IM client.

This works great. Probably the best mobile IM web UI so far. I recommend it.

Facebook

I don't use Facebook but for those who do, this is an official iPhone site. I love the way the interface on this looks.

Battlefleet

This is now my favorite iPhone game. It's awesome. Great animation, intuitive interface and just plain fun!

The facebook portal is freakin sweet. Probably the best iPhone specific page I've seen yet. It's got a lot of features. Photo albums look great too.

The Meebo one leaves things to be desired. It's still not as good as the latest version (0.8.4) of BeeJive's JiveTalk client. It's missing tabs and there's no way to close chats... you can only go back to the contact list (which leaves all open chats at the top of the list). BeeJive will probably change for theirs once it is out of beta (they charge for their BlackBerry client), but for now it's easily the best IM solution on the iPhone. I would love for Meebo to catch up though, as I really like the design of their interface (it's a little prettier than JiveTalk -- which is still very pretty).

JiveTalk™ for iPhone (alpha) Features:
• Multiple IM networks, multiple accounts per network: AIM®/iChat, MSN®, Yahoo!®, GoogleTalk®, ICQ®, and Jabber
• Automatically reconnects in case of data service disruption, including phone calls, loss of cell coverage
• Real-time chats, quick switch between multiple simultaneous chats, intuitive chat interface:
- click to browse, call, or send an email directly from the chat screen
- full emoticon support
• SSL encryption of all over-the-air data transmission
• Control your own availability, set custom status messages, be invisible, change privacy controls

Coming Soon to JiveTalk™ for iPhone:
• Manage your buddy-list, including add/remove, nicknames, groups, block, approve/deny requests
• Email & save your current chats

Seriously, Meebo can't compete yet. I would actually consider paying for JiveTalk's app, it's that good.

Also, Amazon unveiled a (very) stripped down iPhone portal today. Visit amazon.com on your iPhone and it'll give you a link to the iPhone version of the page.

Wow. Okay, I take back what I said. I hadn't used JiveTalk for a while. I looks fantastic now. It's definitely the best. Meebo isn't a bad alternative but you're right, it doesn't have half these features.

Amazon has opened a special iPhone portal -- go to amazon.com on your iphone and it'll give you the button to test it out at the top of the page. Very sparse and kinda lackluster. Looks like they threw it together in about 10 minutes.

Have a question for you iphone users...

What plan do you have from AT&T? The low, middle or high plan? I was looking at the middle plan for $79 a month, and was wondering with taxes and what not, what you pay?

Also, since I am in NYC, if anyone who has the iphone and the $79 plan, can you let me know what you are paying a month after all the taxes and fees are factored in?

Thanks

I've been having a strange problem with the volume level when using the iPod function in the iPhone, although I haven't been able to precisely determine the circumstances that cause the bug to occur. In a nutshell, if I am in the middle of listening to something in the iPod mode, pause the music, and then go to a webpage to view a movie or something else with sound, the "scale" of the volume slider is all messed up when I return to the iPod mode. In other words, if I was listening to something on 50% volume before I went to the webpage, the 50% point on the scale when I go back to the iPod is incredibly loud -- uncomfortably so. Unplugging and replugging the headphones seems to work most of the time.

The weird thing is that this sometimes happens using Safari when I'm not listening to music or movies in the browser, and I don't know why it happens sometimes and not others. I never use Sound Check, and I have verified that the setting has not been toggled on/off when this situation occurs.

Has anyone else noticed this?

so what have iphone sales been like after the initial first few weeks of release?

Apple hasn't released numbers, other than the 275,000 sold in the first day an a half. No idea how well it's selling since then.

Jinx: I haven't seen that issue, but the circumstances you describe are kind of an odd set. Perhaps it's simply an issue of making the volume more consistent across different apps. Hopefully they can do that in an update.

As for my bill, I have the low plan. $59.99 a month, and I just paid my first "real" bill yesterday, as the first bill had activation costs, was prorated, etc. My total bill was $71 and change. Again, this is obviously the lower plan and I live in Texas.

I have the low plan ($59.99 w/ 450 min, 200 sms, 5000 night/weekend) and my bill with taxes included is $66.90 a month. That's $6.91 in taxes. Assuming the taxes are the same for the $79 plan, that would make it $86.90 a month.

Are you in NYC? Just trying to make sure of the tax rate...

Also with AT&T, when do they start their Nights and Weekends? is 7pm or 9pm? VZW is 9pm and its annoying

I think I love it more now than when I first got it. I can't imagine not having it now, and I'm much better at using all of it's different functions now than when I first got it.

FYI: AT&T Nights begin at 9PM like most of the other carriers. I think Sprint may have dropped theirs to 7 though.

No, I'm in Indiana but I can't imagine the taxes being that much different. You should just call your local AT&T store and ask them for the price with taxes. Nights and Weekends are from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. I think you can pay an extra $8.99 a month for "Extended Nights and Weekends" which would make it 7 p.m. and ending at 7 a.m.

So, what's the word? Are people still loving their iPhones just as much, now that the honeymoon is over?
Are you kidding? I'm using it more now than I ever used my old Treo and iPod combined. Best gadget I've ever owned.

Great, I hope it fixes the iPod crashing when browsing Safari issue and also the iPod losing track of how far in my podcasts I've listened to and restarting from the beginning.

Do custom ringtones still work in 1.0.2?

Still in love!

the other day I was streaming the 1up podcast in my house, then left to go to work drove downtown. I realized I had been streaming the podcast the whole time. Pretty damn awsome.

I am sure its been posted but the 1up show and 1up yours XML feeds are both compatible with the iphone!

Even more so for me now. I just took a five day mini vacation and didn't need my laptop but still kept on top of everything. *heart*

I've been a Cingular customer since 2006. So my plan had 700 minutes, free mobile 2 mobile, free n&w and rollover for 39.99, then I had to pay the extra $19.99 for the iPhone data plan

By the way, those asking about how sales are going may be interested in this:

http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/08/22/iphonesales/index.php?lsrc=mwrss

Essentially, analysts are now saying that demand remains very high for the iPhone and they are estimating that Apple will see through 800,000 units in the fourth quarter, beating their own estimates of 730,000. This particular analyst says that he feels his estimates are "conservative".

So, take with a grain of salt, but it does appear that the iPhone is still selling well.

I will HOPEFULLY have the phone by next friday(September 7th) but I have some more questions:

-I've been power reading through the thread, and whats this about ringtones? Are you not allowed to use your MP3s or sections of them as ringtones?

-I know youtube works fine with the Iphone's version fo Safari, but what about other streaming sites such as say dailymotion?

-I've gotten drunk and lost my phone more than one times, so insurance is a must--do standard insurance rates apply? I know they've changed so many regulations especially for the iphone just wondering how this works for anyone who got the coverage on it.

-how smooth is the browsing overall. is it really like having the web in your pocket, or do some sites render like crap.

Is there a way to change your shipping preferences on Amazon iPhone?

I ordered something using my iPhone and it's a neat feature, but I had to cancel after a minute because the shipping was too slow and I couldn't figure out how to change it.

Sad I have to give up the phone to my brother next week because I'm moving to Japan for a year. I'm gonna miss the iPhone. :(

From what I understand, you need to do a filesystem hack in order to swap out ringtones at the moment. Officially, for now, you must use one of the preset ones.

As far as Safari is concerned, it is unable to run Flash. Youtube is a flash based site, so you won't be able to view videos through Safari's browser. There is a built in Youtube application that has videos encoded in H.264 which the iPhone can play, but it's really only a much smaller subset of YouTube's videos (though they are getting better with selection).

Browsing in Safari, however, is fantastic. If you can live without Java and Flash, which unfortunately a lot of sites use, then its almost as if you're viewing through a typical web browser. My only beef is that if there are a lot of things loaded on the page (ie a picture thread or something), Safari can crashed at random times. Luckily, though, whenever it crashes it saves all the pages you had open. So say you had 3 tabs opened - if Safari crashes, all 3 tabs will be there when you reload up Safari - though you will have to redownload each page again.

As far as insurance is concerned, I do not know of any plans that are offered on the iPhone. Then again, I haven't inquired about any. Perhaps another owner is better suited to answering this question.

Thanks.. I'm pretty sure I want to take the plunge, can't wait to finally get one.

Also, how painless is transfering files from the computer? For example, I have a good number of movies I would like to view on my Iphone. Any formats it doesn't run?

If it runs on the iPod, it runs on the iPhone. Far as I know all the media management is through iTunes, so if iTunes can serve it and play it to an iPod, it does the same for the iPhone. It's as painless as using an iPod. I've converted a couple DVDs to H.264 which works very nicely on the phone.

If you're using a Mac, you can use a program called iFuntastic to load ringtones. It's pretty easy, and walks you through the process.

I made the decision to hold off for a while after confirming with multiple sources that there is no sort of insurance offered with the Iphone. No way I'm spending $500 on a phone and not have some sort of coverage--especially with MY trackrecord with phones.

You name it, its probably happened to one of my phones.. From dropping one in the toliet, to having it fall out of my pocket while on a go-kart track, to losing atleast 3 of them while out partying, to countless drops on the concrete, to having a computer monitor fall on one crushing the screen, to having a psycho GF throw one against the wall etc.. etc..

They didn't offer insurance on The Razr at first either but eventually did, so hopefully the process is similar here.

you can get applecare, can't you?

hey folks..I just picked up my 8GB iPhone today...I've got two quick questions.

Do you a place I can go to get cool backgrounds for my iphone?

Where can I get video game songs for ringtones..like from zelda or the battle won music from final fantasy.
