The one thing that is interesting is that it is quite unlikely that the update will actually brick a phone which has additional applications.... though the guys doing installer.app went a similar route to jailbreak the iPhone. I'm on those IRC channels and there is a storm brewing... really really brewing. Apple could totally fuck up a good thing.

I don't really believe that they will brick phones either but I totally see the possibilities of software issues happening. I don't blame Apple for saying they won't deal with the problems that come up from it though. That's part of the risk of "hacking" your phone. If you want to take that risk and it backfires, it's no fault but your own.

Personally, I have not done anything to mine because I don't want to take that risk. Not to say I have not been tempted... I have modified other gadgets of mine before without a problem. I'm just not taking chances with my phone.

If Apple starts bricking the harmless hackers- the will find a bigger shitstorm than that which they navigated after the $200 price drop. There are a LARGE number of 3rd party Apple developers who are greatly protesting this and they will be extremely vocal if their phones (because many of these guys are building apps for the iPhone) get bricked after the update.

You'd think out of anyone they'd know the potential consequences of what they were doing, especially as Apple has no official third-party iPhone development program outside of encouraging Web 2.0 apps, right? In light of Steve Jobs' recent comments and the clarification of the earlier stance on third-party apps / unlocking, none of this should be *that* surprising. You play with fire, you can't really complain when you get burned.

I'd be surprised if it *bricks* those phones, but I would not be surprised if an update breaks the ability to run third party apps or requires a restore before it can update. And how easy it'll be to get back to the point we're at now with the new firmware is undetermined. The iPod Touch has not yet been broken, and if the new iPhone firmware has similar security, it may be back to square one. We'll see soon enough.

After almost 3 weeks as an iPhone owner I have to say that I am a full on convert to the land of smart phones. Its like going from VHS to DVD, or to CD from cassette, I don't think I can ever see myself go back to standard cell phones. Even as an avid web browser for the past decade+, I never really felt the need to have access to the internet at all times, where ever I ago, but its come in so fucking handy in just these few weeks. Hell, I probably browse on my iPhone than I do the computer these days--and thats saying something.

Definitely back to square one. I would highly doubt that the new phone firmware will not have encrypted images passing back and forth and that changes everything significantly.

Maybe the iPhone devs will just run pages on their iPhone to keep requesting YouTube videos and take down the shitty cingular edge backbone in protest :)

Posting from my iPhone! Two questions:

1. Why won't gmail work????

2. Is there one great web resource where I can learn everything that this phone can do?

Quick question -- Is there a way to make a simple slideshow of your photos using the built-in photo app? i don't feel like reviewing the iPhone videos on apple.com, and i don't remember it being mentioned, although it seems like it would be something they'd include.

Yes, it's built in and looks like iPhoto lite.

Help me out GAF I think I may have a defective Iphone...

Play a song using speaker mode on the Iphone. Next, cover up the speakers one a a time and tell me if the only sound you are getting is from the left speaker. I am not getting any sound on the right speaker, so I need to know if mine is borked. Thanks!!

The speaker is on the left, the microphone's on the right. There is no right speaker.

Gmail works fine, albeit with some quirks due to Gmail's POP implementation. I'm not sure what you did, but make sure you turn on POP in your Gmail settings.

Also, Google has updated Google Calendar to have a custom iPhone interface. Looks good.

I just added my gmail to my email in settings. Is there a way to mark all the messages in my inbox as read? They're all old, and I don't want to go through them one at a time.

Swipe to the right on the message and press delete. You don't have to open each one.

but there is no fast way to highlight them all? I have to do each individually?

In hindsight, you should have cleaned out your inbox before you set up the phone. Now, that's the only way I know of.

The only annoying thing for me is that Gmail sends a copy of every email you write to the inbox, regardless of CC'ing. I haven't figured out how to stop it.

On the plus side, it always works, which is way more than I can say for my Windows Mobile phone, which got into the habit of resending messages every 15 minutes until I manually deleted them. This is when it worked at all.

The real answer is that Gmail is what is causing these problems. Yahoo works flawlessly on the iPhone for example.

.Mac mail works flawlessly too. One thing you can do is have it only sync new messages and not import old messages from your inbox. When I had my gmail account going to the phone I had it set up that way. I'm semi-surprised Google hasn't fixed this yet.

Nothing major but something I thought was kind of cool happened this morning. I have a two year old car stereo that has the ipod hook-up in it built in where you plug a cable that goes into the ipod. The connection at the bottom of the iphone is the same but I was a little nervous it wouldn't work and sure enough when I plugged it in, it put up a message saying it didn't support this accessory and did I want to switch it to airplane mode.

Fortunately despite the message it actually works and I can control it with my stereo system like my video ipod but then it dawned on me the damn thing has an internet connection so I can play internet streaming music now through it on my car stereo. Probably obvious to most people but I was pretty damn pumped about that this morning.

It doesn't give you the EDGE / cell phone interference through the speakers?

Anyone restore their iphone yet?

I want to know if I restore it, I can make sure it doesnt sync my contacts from outlook....

If I have disable syncing when connected to itunes, and then I go into each tab on teh iphone, and pick what I want it to sync, and then restore it and sync it will follow the rules I set correct?

Also, what happens to the photos I took using my iphone? I dont want to lose them when I restore this phone.

How do you configure gmail to only import new messages?

I'd like to know how to do that too. I am terrible about cleaning out my mailbox and every time I show the phone to someone they make a snarky comment about how much unread mail I have, ha ha.

Not that I could hear. Next time I'll test it out more but essentially I just searched for a song on Youtube and played it. It was the crappy quality Youtube sound quality but I didn't detect any buzz.

Was it streaming the YouTube clip over wifi or edge? Wifi - no interference. Edge - Holy shit.

Edge. I was just driving down the road. I first played it off the Ipod like normal and then I was curious what would happen if I picked a website or the youtube thing and it just started playing whatever I picked instead of the music.

Apple is so close to truly having a killer app with this thing. If it only had a GPS I could dump my TomTom and then I would never leave my car ;)

My next secret goal is to find someway to mount it on the dashtop or windshield so it's like having a portable dvd player with video files on long drives.

Yeah, that's smart. "I'm driving a long way, so it's okay to watch movies during the trip!"

I don't get buzz unless its pulling down a voicemail. I have mine actually plugged into a tape adapter in my car, using it as an absurdly low capacity iPod.

When I started my car this morning I heard the buzzy-ness, but other than that I could be bringing up Google Maps or anything else and it works without buzz. I have more issues with the 'hiss' from the iPOd->Cassette adapter.

Turn off "use recent mode" in the client settings on the iPhone.

I'm not following this. I looked in settings and this wasn't an option. Where did you find this and what does it do?

Just an FYI to anyone who has an iPhone with Windows... If you are going to do a restore, you must go into the iphone via Windows explorer and save the pics you took with the phone. if you dont, and you restore, you will lose all those pics as evidenced by my restore last night... :(

Got my iPhone yesterday, took about 30 mins to do the unlock procedures, and dear god I'm loving this thing.

I have it running on Fido w/ a pay as you go card, and it's great - I've erased all edge settings, so it can't access if it tried (it says i'm not subscribed to Edge, so.. good).

Was upset that the iPhone didn't pull my contacts off the Sim card into the address book, but that's okay, I manually re-entered them all.

I've got installer installed, and have been trying out a lot of different apps - Summerboard rocks.

I'm loving the ipod interface, videos and such play beautifully.. only dislike is the itunes "playlist" method of putting stuff on it, rather than dragging and dropping.

All in all, I love this phone.. I will never go back to a flip phone... for the record, my last phone was a RAZR v3i (with itunes) - so this is a HUGE step up :)

Forgive me if this was posted earlier upthread, as I'm a recent member of the club, but is there a ringtones thread? Particularly for the iPhone?

Thanks Dad!

In fairness he does have a good point. I mean I wouldn't want to be driving on the same road as someone attempting to watch a movie on a 4" IPhone screen mounted on a dashboard. This isn't about a person having the right to do stupid shit, it's about the prospect of someone acting irresponsibly and risking the safety of others. I'm just sayin...

Certainly entitled to that opinion.

All I can say is that I'm the most cautious driver I know. I put pretty of car lengths of distance between me and other cars. And anybody who uses a Navigation device like a Tom Tom knows what it's like to have two things in focus. I'm not going to sit there and munch out the popcorn while I drive.

I found what I was looking for anyway. Hopefully I won't kill some of you people on the road...

Comparing watching video on an Iphone to a TomTom is bit if a stretch don't you think? As an owner of the Tomtom one, the attention required is intermittent totally unlike watching a movie where we are conditioned to devote our sustained attention to it.

We can agree to disagree, but hopefully whatever you decide to do will be in line with your contention that "you are the most cautious driver you know".

Ciao!

Fair enough.

Like I said, I won't be watching something like I just sat down at the imax. My comment was more an off the cuff post. Who knows how I will actually use it and in what exact circumstances.

Does the iphone offer real exchange support yet?
at launch it was planned but not implemented as far as I know.

Thanks in advance

LOL, but not sadly it does not offer real Exchange support yet. I'm not entirely sure where it is on their roadmap.
