OK, just tried it. The pic in the contact list remains, however you cannot do anything else with it, like e-mail it to someone. So it's basically trapped in your phone. The reason I was hesitant to try it is because I took a really good picture in "Pictures" and didn't want to lose it. However, your post made me realize I can just take a random picture of nothing to test it out.

If you are afraid of losing your pics with a restore, you can do what I read about. You can go into Windows explorer and open the iphone. In one of the folders you will find all your pics... You can save them to your HDD, restore your phone, and then put those pics back into that folder, and they are there again.

Thanks for the answers yayaba...

I had a quick question... I plan on getting a 4GB iPhone tomorrow or Friday and will be unlocking it and using T-Mobile...

While using an unlocked iPhone via T-Mobile is there anything I'm missing out on aside from the visual voice mail?

I have the Sidekick unlimited data plan for my SKII, I'm assuming this will carry over to the iPhone and I'll be able to send unlimited text/emails etc.... if anyone can confirm that would be much appreciated.

not sure if anyone's answered by now -and youve probably already bought it :P -but im on an unlimited data plan in aus for the SK3 - im sure that sms/mms are free if you use a different phone (i uesd a different phone after breaking my sk2 and before getting my sk3), but any other data stuff (emails, web) are not included in the 'free data' as when you use them on the SK it uses your carrier's SK servers to pass the data through. might be different in the states but that's how a telstra rep explained it to me here.

Oh alright, so if lets say I wanted a legit account with AT&T all I'd hve to do is hit restore, and then activate? I'm mostly worried bout the "brick" when I try to go legit.

If you have unlocked your phone - your phone has a good chance to become a brick, or more specifically there is a good chance it will enter a state where it will not work with the sim in it (which in proper parlance isn't really a brick).

ok so I have a question...

I was in my local B&N tonight, and obviously they have the tmobile hotspot, but they also had an attwifi hotspot, and when I got on my iphone and tried to connect to the net, it took me to an AT&T wifi page, where I had to log in or buy membership... My question is since we have AT&T with the iphone, do we get access to that site?

Thanks

Get something like that for free? Hah. No you have to pay just the same, the folks who handle the hotspots are a different business unit than the ones who handle wireless.

Ok guys, I tried, but I finally made the decision to buy a Touch instead of an iPhone.

I mean, I really, really liked the amount of customization available for the iPhone, but after the 1.1.1 update fiasco, I'm afraid I can't keep up with the cat and mouse game.

What's the point of purchasing and iPhone, if I won't be able to use it as a phone? -I live in Mexico, so the only way to use it as a phone is trough unlocking-.Aside from the phone, the only 3 fuctions that I'll miss by buying a Touch is camera -which is not that good-, speaker -also, not so good-, and Mail.app -I'm not a heavy email user-. I just want to listen to my music, view my videos, browse the internet now and then, and, in the long run, use third party apps... I mean, I even got a new phone just a couple months ago. There's no point in getting another phone.

Unless the 1337 H4X00RZ come up with a way to at least fake activate the 1.1.1 firmware in the iPhone during the next week, I'll buy a 16GB Touch.

Pretty much the same reasoning I used for my Touch purchase.

You specifically said "you cannot update" when in fact you can.

Well, since I NEVER meant that, can you please move on?

"cannot update" = "not a good idea to update"

Seriously.

Thanks for the reply.

What I ended up doing was switching my sidekick unlimited data plan to the T-Mobile Total Internet plan (includes use of EDGE/T-Mobile Hotspots), and it's the same price($19.99), so it didn't change my billing... However for Text messages, I had to change my plan lol...

So my battery life is godawful. A 20 minute phone call drains like a quarter of my battery, as does just sitting in my pocket idle for like eight hours. Will they just let me exchange the phone, or will I have to let them try to fix it and be phoneless for a week?

You can try lowering the brightness to help with battery life. Also, didn't someone mention that the new firmware helped with battery life? Or maybe I misread that.

You might want to look into that... I use my iPhone daily, have it at work, 8hrs a day... get calls, e-mails, SMS, and at the end of the night when I charge it up, I only used about 1/4 of the battery.

Finnaly got my phone activated but i had to put my current adress and billinging info which i wanted to avoid. Now i have to wait 30 days to change it to the address and credit card it should have been.

Same here, and I use the MP3 playback for at least two hours everyday during my commute to work. I have never had my battery go below half charged, although I do charge it every night.

Well, if you subscribe to AT&T DSL you now get access to all those AT&T hotspots as well. Pretty nice side benefit for anyone who has their DSL service.

I set my awesome SotC wallpaper on my iphone but the picture wont show up. The main screen is still black. Did i do something wrong or is that just not the place where it shows up?

Wallpaper only shows up on the lock screen unless you hack your iPhone.

Those guys are all part of the same business unit.

AT&T Wi-Fi Basic is FREE to AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Pro, Elite, FastAccess® DSL Xtreme, Xtreme 6.0, and AT&T U-Verse customers, no ordering required. Customers can login at any AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot by entering their primary DSL or U-Verse account username and password.

KMAC over at hackint0sh has found a way to downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2. Here's the skinny:

* Start iTunes and plug in your iPhone which is running the 1.1.1 firmware.
* Hold down the Sleep and Home button for 10 seconds. Allow the phone to power off, but keep holding down the buttons. After 10 seconds, let go of the Sleep button, but keep the Home button pressed until iTunes sees your iPhone. The screen on your iPhone should be displaying nothing right now.
* iTunes will ask you if you want to restorea. Hold down Option or Alt, I forget which (Shift if you are in Windows), and click restore. When iTunes asks you what file you would like to restore from, navigate to your 1.0.2 folder. You may have to rename that file to .zip and uncompress it. It will begin to restore.
* When it completes, you will get an error. The iPhone will display the yellow triangle on the screen. Leave iTunes open, and run AppTapp. This may give you an error, but you should see the "Activate iPhone" screen after.
* Run AppTapp again. If the iPhone isn't being recognized, restart the computer and then run AppTapp for the second time.
* Congrats! You now have 1.0.2 again! iNdependence and all other modding apps will now work.

This has been verified with iTunes 7.4.3.1.

Wiki here.

In my eternal quest to figure out whether to get a Touch or just dump verizon and get an iPhone (4GB if I can find one), I'm now leaning toward the iPhone again. My iPod video works fine and would still be used as my primary music player - where it is used mainly in my car when I commute. I'd already have to cut the music on the Touch by half since I'm nearly filling my 30GB video iPod, so I figure getting the 4GB iPhone would be ok since I'd just put some selected podcasts on it or something at a time, and the online access anywhere with the data plan is starting to sound appealing, at pretty much $10-$15 more than I pay now at Verizon. Does anyone live in Virginia and know how much the cheapest AT&T plan comes out to actually cost after taxes, fees, etc.?

My only major concern is this: Let's say I have an awful ATT experience. If I decide to ditch ATT - and let's just assume I'm not going to unlock the iPhone - what functionality will I lose on the device at that point. Would I at least still be able to use the WiFi and the iPod functionality, or does the thing basically just become a brick the minute you no longer have an ATT plan (again, assuming no unlocking or hacking)?

Yeah, I know. I was just pointing out that it was a pretty good side benefit if you have AT&T DSL and then can use all those hotspots with your laptop or iPhone.

So apparently Dailymotion works on the iPhone/iPod touch now. Not sure if that is old news but can someone confirm?
If they hadn't gotten rid of all their porn this would be much more awesome news.

Ok, it's the start of a new month which means my text messages can reset to 200 again.

Now, how the shit do I check how many I've sent? I know how to check my minutes, but I can't find a text message count ANYWHERE. Since I only get 200 a month I'd like to be able to check my current "balance" once in a while. (Even though I tend to only use about 100 a month.)

I have these, but I have the older pair that has the mic, but not the itunes controls... I think I am gonna return them and get this newer updated model. I just hope I will be able to distinguish the difference....

How do they sound? Since they're $100 I could possibly use the iPhone store credit on them, but I'm generally not a huge fan of ear buds.

I never opened the ones I have now, but the reviews on apple's site have been favorable... I pretty much got them because I had the credit... there would be no way I would spend over $100 for headphones..

Also, I hate the buds that come with the iphone they kill my ear. So I have always enjoyed the in-ear buds, as they are very comfortable. I have the apple branded buds for my old nano and I use them now for my iphone. They are very comfortable.

You can check it on AT&T's wireless site, just log into your account and there's a tab to check. Though I think you have to go through one billing cycle before it shows that. Since I pay for the 1500 and I know I won't blow through that I don't check it often.

I called support about this issue--the guy said to dial the number that gives you data usage information. Not sure what it is though.

I only have gmail set up right now and I'm not thrilled about the lack of integration with the website. I'm a heavy Blackberry user, so what settings can I use to most closely replicate the Blackberry experience?

Also, I really wish there was an option to see what you are listening to as you use other applications. There is so much screen available that I think it's a waste to not use a sliver of the screen to have a "now playing" crawl.

Like Superpac said, go here: http://www.wireless.att.com/home/ and login to your account. Then there's a "Data" tab next to "Minutes" which shows how many you've used. Also, you don't need to wait a full billing cycle. I'm only a week in, and I can see how many messages I have sent/received.

If you have the new 1.1.1 firmware and set the Home button to show iPod controls when music is playing, double-tapping the home button will show you what you're listening to and bring up music controls from any app.

This is perfect timing because my POS apple headphones stopped working. It looks like I am going to spend my $100 credit on these. Now I just have to wait until they show up at the apple store so I can buy them.

Does anyone know when this headset is going to be showing up at the apple store?

I'm hoping these are a little longer than the Apple ones. The official earphones are just a little too short for me, but I am addicted to the click mic. I've been waiting for these updated V-moda's.
