It's not bad. I did my initial sync via WiFi, but it's decent for now. I've always found edge in my area to be fast enough for email.

For everybody switching to Gmail IMAP, make sure you go into the advanced settings and set up some further stuff that Google doesn't mention in their "how-to". By default the Sent, Drafts, and Deleted mail folders are local (ie - on your iPhone). If you want total synchronization between your Gmail you need to change that. Here's how:

http://5thirtyone.com/archives/862

Properly sort Drafts, Deleted, and Sent mail on the iPhone

Assuming that you have followed the iPhone IMAP setup instructions, it is now time to properly configure your mobile Mail client so that Sent Mail, Deleted Mail, Drafts, and Junk are reflected properly after syncing back between the webmail client and any other desktop clients you may have.

1. Open ‘Settings’ > ‘Mail’ > [Your Gmail IMAP account] > ‘Advanced’
2. Select ‘Drafts Mailbox’ > ‘On the Server’ > ‘[Gmail] Drafts’. Return to the ‘Advanced’ view.
3. Select ‘Sent Mailbox’ > ‘On the Server’ > ‘[Gmail] Sent Mail’. Return to the ‘Advanced’ view.
4. Select ‘Deleted Mailbox’ > ‘On the Server’ > ‘[Gmail] Trash’. Return to the ‘Advanced’ view.

Any emails sent from your iPhone will appear in Gmail’s ‘Sent’ view, any saved drafts saved on your iPhone will appear in Gmail’s ‘Drafts’ view, and any deleted messages will be reflected in Gmail’s ‘Trash’ view.

Indeed awesome. In addition to that, you may need to set an IMAP path prefix. In the same settings tab, under Advanced, there is a field that says "IMAP Path Prefix". If in that spot you write "INBOX", your Mail.app "trash", "junk", "drafts" and "sent" will be in sync with Gmail's folders of the same, rather than showing as separate folders in Mail.app.

Question for the h4ck3rs.

OK, so I spent the last hour or so updating my hacked iPhone to 1.1.1. Everything's gone smoothly, but I can't get the SummerBoard patch to work. It says it patched successfully, but when I reboot the phone SummerBoard doesn't come up and the Installer.app won't update to version 3.0. It checks its sources and comes up with nothing new...I'm confuzed.

Are you on a carrier other than AT&T? Is it possible to upgrade an unlocked phone to 1.1.1?

Question for all the Canadians out there...

Should I go with the IPhone or the Ipod Touch?

I'm currently on Telus with a Razr (LOL) and have a scratched as hell, low life battery IPOD Nano.

So take into factor -> changing phone plan, cost, etc.

Thanks.

8gig touch? I'd go for the iphone. My friend got a 16gig touch, and he's been bitching about the quality of the picture when he plays videos, it's a little washed out, not as clear as earlier production models, apparently.

The answer is obvious.

Some people like seperating phone, from digital music player.

I considered that. Looking at what you get for the money spent... Seems like an easy choice to make.

You gain a phone while downgrading from 16gigs to 8, it's not as cut and dry as you're making it.

It is for me. 8GB is plenty (for me). Did you miss the part about him coming from a NANO?

You missed the part he said he's from Canada, and also has to switch plans. I'm not even aware that Iphone is sold in Canada to begin with, unless you buy a ridiculously expensive unlocked phone.

I've only been to Canada once and know nothing about the service there. I was simply factoring in 'bang for the buck' as I mentioned once before. If he were to get the Touch, his phone issue(s) would still be there. Not the case w/ the iPhone, unless it creates additional ones.

Do you get a commission on Touch sales or something?

If the Iphone was normally available here, for the price that it's available in US, it would be a smart choice to buy it, unless of course you already have a phone you like. However, I think the only option of buying Iphone here is to get an illegally unlocked phone, which they are selling for some stupid amounts of money.

I was facing the same decision, and spending a $300 for Touch is a lot easier pill to swallow when you know you're buying something that's going to be obsolete in a year or so anyways, among a mass of other gadgets you buy that also keep getting obsolete.

Just revirginized my 1.02, then upgraded to 1.1.1 and re-unlocked..

worked perfectly, my contacts were resynced etc, woo.

So happy that it worked... the guides at hackintosh are perfect and easy to follow.

edit: I'm Canadian too, I'm on fido -- I've heard reports the iphone doesnt work with the TELUS network, not sure the exact cause.

Anyways, iPhone over the iPod Touch for sure, I love having everything in one device.

The sad part is that the only reason I'm considering the soft-unlock is because I would much rather have the good guys exploit-then-patch the TIFF issue than wait around for someone to open up a brickmyphone.com and have someone at Slashdot redirect me there.

Woah! I was doing the jailbreak thing and the phone rang during the process and killed the page! Think I might leave it alone, since the iPhone is my only source entertainment, communication...and arousal ('til I move into my new place).

i gotta send some jpegs or me to my GF, who has an iPhone, for her picture caller ID. what resolution do i need to scale my pics to?

yeah...i did that apptapp thing...and installing apps work, but they don't launch. it just tries to open and then it exits back to the main screen. any help?

Worked perfectly.

Now, what to install?

There are a lot of apps out there from what I see...

Yeah the unlocked, expense part + switching plans is too problematic. I'll grab the Touch, thanks guys.
Hmm, you know, I just found out that if you live close to the border, you can buy Iphone in the apple store in US, soft-unlock it, and run it with any SIM card. Well, not any, apparently the Telus network doesn't work, but Rogers network works. I'm not sure if the Edge internet functionality works, as it didn't work on an Iphone I've seen from a friend here in Canada.

Still, that alone made me reconsider my Ipod Touch stance, as I do live close enough to an Apple Store in US that such a trip would be worthwhile. I still dunno, Touch is really more impressive from the thinness+weight standpoint (Iphone is like twice as thick) and I don't like phone battery running out due to media playback, when I need to receive an important call. Plus I'd always have to worry what happens if there's no jailbreak for some future firmware update. And if Edge-internet doesn't work on Rogers, that's a pretty big negative as well.

Sorry, but the iPhone is not twice as thick as the Touch. The Touch is obviously thinner, but it isn't THAT much thinner.

If you're concerned about battery life on your media device and phone, then perhaps the Touch is still the way to go for you. Personally, battery life is rarely an issue for me, and I love having everything in one device. So easy and convenient.

Hey guys, how is everybody enjoying their iPhones and service through AT&T?

I'm considering getting a new phone and the iPhone (Probably opt for a refurb model @ $299) is a candidate because I tend to wander and having maps at my fingertips will be indispensible.

Thanks.

Still awesome. I love my iPhone more and more all the time, and it's probably only going to get better now that they announced the SDK coming out in February.

Service with AT&T has been great as well. I switched from Verizon and haven't missed a beat. I have nothing bad to say so far.

As with any cell phone or carrier, really. There was about a 3-day stretch where I was getting no bars within my apt., but it thankfully cleared up. Before and after that I've had no problems, and I've taken the phone with me on trips to several other cities and it's worked swimmingly everywhere I've been.

Same here. I've taken mine on several trips and it's worked fine as well. Except for a trip to the Arkansas backwoods, where no one's phones were working.

True. Of course like I've said I've used several cell phones at this place before and people come over and are able to use their phones inside my place so that does kind of point to a combination of AT&T and the Iphone not being the best phone on the market in my book but everybody's experience is slightly unique.

I'd be more apt to point the problem at AT&T rather than the phone. My iPhone has worked where other phones haven't, and even with only a single bar it generally holds the signal and allows me to have a conversation with no issues.

You never really know in these cases though.

Telus isn't GSM, i.e doesn't use sim cards. That's great, i want to get an iphone, i'm just kinda worried that a new model will be out soon. I'll wait for a thinner, higher capacity model.

Define soon? I'd be shocked if we saw a new iPhone in the next six months. I guess it's possible they could announce something at MacWorld in January, but I highly doubt it. Then again, I didn't think they would drop the price so quickly either.

Thanks.

I have a friend that hates AT&T with a passion and is constantly dumping on them, but IMO all cell phone services are inferior to land lines. It's a simple fact of life IMO.

Okay.

I think I'll take the plunge as I'm not willing to recharge my Virgin Mobile kit yet again.

does anyone else notice that the iPhone rarely checks for email every 15 minutes??

Even though I have my gmail IMAP set up to check automatically, it NEVER has. I've always had to open mail to get new messages. It wasn't much more consistent with gmail over pop.*

*no, I don't have all my mail filtered out of my mailbox

iphone problem:

This problem started today. I was surfing the web just fine today and everything worked. But then for some reason after a while the iphone wouldn't let me click any of the links on the webpages. I can still load new pages and go to different websites, but I can't click on the links and the tabs on these websites. Is this a common problem?

Yes. Happens to me all the time. You have to power off your Iphone and then turn it on.

Figures.

I go to buy the refurb model and they're sold out. >:|

The refurbs are 4GB models at $299. IMO, just getting a new 8GB for $100 more makes more sense, the minute you put any kind of videos on the thing you'll wish you had more space.

I'm not a big video guy, and even when I only had a 1GB PSP memory stick I was very tidy about watching an episode on my lunch break; deleting and replacing it. :P

I wouldn't be surprised to see a 16GB model or other color variants announced at MacWorld, but otherwise, I expect for at least the next 6-9 months, any updates will be via software.

I'm loving IMAP! Thanks Gmail
This is the best toy ever. Gotta love the iphone.

I just discovered minddojo on dBelement.com too!

gotta say, pretty damn good brain training clone especially for a web app.

Looks like they're adding more and more test types.

I'm happy with Touch for now, but if some future revision of Iphone happens to have GPS, that will be a day one purchase for sure.

Is that SDK news 100% confirmed? Does that mean the native apps for Iphone + Touch could be made by anyone? That's really great news.
