I think for not having GPS at all, what Apple has added will more than suffice for me. I don't need it to be 100% perfect and it's more than what came with the phone originally. I'm content with it.

So what web clips have people added to their home screen? I added Jivetalk and PocketTweets. Both already have custom icons up (neat!).

Just added JiveTalk as well. So much more convenient having it right there on the dashboard like a real app. Looking forward to it becoming a real app! :)

So what are some good sites for iPhone info? I'm looking for a good forum, a good place for accessory reviews, good news, and good tips and tricks (not necessarily hacking stuff).

Good stuff is what I want. :)

Added Facebook (needs a better icon), Google Reader, and NeoGAF (needs a better icon!) to the home page. Very nice. One step closer to true apps.

I finally added this, any quirks about it? Does it constantly stay connected?

Is their any way to change the icons? I just have SportsTap on their right now, but I need to get around to putting jivetalk on the home screen. This update rocks though.

I believe it disconnects after a period of inactivity. But yeah, it stays connected. Only down side is that you have to check it regularly to see if anyone sent you a message. I'm guessing a dedicated IM app (Adium Mobile?) would be able to alert you by showing you a red number on the icon when you have IM's waiting.

Feb., SDK, real apps. Here's hoping! :)

Can anyone answer this question? I live in Los Angeles and have an iPhone with standard AT&T service. I'm travelling to Taiwan for business for 3 weeks. Work has provided me a separate cell phone for use abroad, but I want to be able to use my iPhone for non-phone features (camera, iPod) i.e., non-Internet/text messaging/phone for fear of roaming charges. Can I do this? Or if I receive a text message in another country, will it start ringing up crazy charges? Can I leave it in airplane mode? Or should I just turn it off and leave it at home?

I know someone who purchased the iphone here in NYC, but lives and works in Japan. He uses it over there as a mobile internet appliance and for e-mails...

Just keep it in Airplane mode. Also, I might be mistaken but I think the phone only roams if you have roaming turned on so you might want to turn that off too.

If you run a website and want to create a custom icon for it, here's how:

1. Create a PNG image that is 57 x 57 pixels.
2. Name it "apple-touch-icon.png" and place it at the root of your website.

That will make it work for every page on your site. If you want to give particular pages a custom icon, do the following:

1. Create a PNG image that is 57 x 57 pixels.
2. Name it anything you want an place it anywhere you like.
3. Add <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="wherever/whatever.png"> to the page's head.

Be sure that when you create your images you take into account that it will cut the corners off and apply a glossy effect.

I've got it working on my blog. ( http://www.ckohler.net/ )

Here's an icon for NeoGAF if a mod wants to use it.

.

Airplane mode should work fine for the features you're looking for. Data roaming is also set to "Off" by default, but you should still be able to use it at open WiFi spots.

So if I enable airplane mode, but set roaming off, I can use Internet at a wi-fi spot without having to worry about roaming charges?

No, if you turn on Airplane mode, it turns off wi-fi also. Just go to Settings -> General -> Network and make sure "Data Roaming" is off and you should be fine.

Pro-Tip workaround

If you try moving apps around your home screen and don't like that the apps are always left-aligned, one strategy to re-organize your apps is to make a home screen link from a black-backgrounded page and then name it as a dot or underscore.

Result: There is a white-to-black gradient, but it's an easy way to fill out your screen and avoid awkward-looking left-justification if you don't want it (the left-justify position of the iTunes Store link drives me nuts).

Got my number ported over from Sprint to my sparkly new iPhone last night. Port took 30 minutes. Not too shabby.

So what's the deal with the iPhone not having drag and drop capabilities like all other ipods? Why do I have to set up some lame playlist for my iphone to get music on it? Pretty lame IMO.

Anyone got some good recommendations for web apps?

They JUST added manual song management Tuesday. It's a checkbox on the device screen. Once enabled, you can drag and drop songs and movies like on older iPod models.

wait what?! this is great news! So you can add songs from different itunes libraries now?

edit: YES! (you need the new itunes) woohoo.

edit some more: still no "enable disk use" :( I would really like to be able to use it as a drive instead of carrying around memory sticks or usb drives.

WHA!? I will check this out TONIGHT! Thanks!

For those of you looking for a way to get custom icons for site that don't yet have them, somebody has solved this problem.

This guy created icons for sites that just forward to the site you want an icon for.

http://ehedaya.googlepages.com/index.html

He's got icons for Facebook, Fandango, The NYT, and a bunch of other sites. Just bookmark his page and you'll get the icon.

Awesome! I wrote one for GAF on my server but I don't want it to get pinged. Maybe I'll set up a Google page for it.

I hadn't thought about it before, but after you initially move around icons, you can't get the iTunes logo to right-justify natively at all until you reset the entire thing from settings:

Here’s the first trick: while the latest version of the iPhone software does add support for lyrics, those lyrics are pulled directly from the song files’ metadata. If you hop into your iTunes library and select a track, you can hit command-I or control-click and choose “Get Info.” You’ll see a number of tabs, but the only we’re interested at the moment is “Lyrics.” Hitting that will give you a big empty text field. Whatever you put in this field is what will show up on the iPhone, so you’re not required to put the lyrics in—really it could be anything you want:notes, recipes, marriage proposals, whatever. But right now, we’ll assume you want to use lyrics.

To find the lyrics for a song, I recommend a simple Google search: entering the title of the song and lyrics usually yields a number of results. So, for example, if I’m looking for the lyrics to The Rolling Stones classic “Gimmer Shelter,” to which I’ve become addicted, thanks to Rock Band, I’ll fire up a Google search and enter “Gimme Shelter +lyrics” (Lyric Wiki is an excellent collaborative site for lyrics). Once you’ve found the words, copy and paste them into the Lyrics dialog box in the appropriate song in iTunes. You’ll then need to re-sync your computer and your iPhone. Couldn’t be easier.

Well, it could be easier. I mean, who wants to spend all their time finding, copying, and pasting lyrics into iTunes. Pretty much nobody. So instead, check out Gimme Some Tune, an iTunes add-on that can be configured to download lyrics for songs as they play. Combined with Doug Adam’s Needle Drop iTunes script, which lets you play songs for arbitrary amounts of time, you can set it up to automatically retrieve lyrics for all of your songs. That’s pretty darn easy.

But how—I’m sure you’re wondering—do I get such lyrics to show up on the iPhone? Easy enough: when the song comes up, tap on the album art. Usually this brings up additional music controls, but if lyrics are present, it’ll overlay them on the album art. You can even scroll through them with a simple flick, if you’re trying to sing along. We also remind you that singing along to your tunes is an activity usually best left for the privacy of your own.

I haven't tried to install those addons yet though, but the manual lyrics addition works fine for me.

Sing That iTune! does lyrics, and Album Art. Google it and you can download it from Apple's website.

Saving lyrics into iTunes is disabled automatically, so you will have to turn it on. It will only find lyrics for a song that is currently playing though, it won't scour your whole library.

I will look into this and combine it with that needle drop thing in that post from sorryaboutdresden and let it roll.

Hm, it comes up blank for me. :(

edit: nevermind, works now...

How do you enable iTunes to save the lyrics?

Wha? Can you elaborate on this trick?

Take a .mp3 file, put it in iTunes and right-click, "Convert Selection to AAC," then rename the AAC file's extension to .m4r and add it back to iTunes and you're good to go!

So do we have a URL for the NeoGAF icon yet?

Also, the lyric thing doesn't seem to show up in the phone. Do I have to enable it in iTunes somehow? I don't see an option for it. I'm able to copy and paste lyrics into the individual songs in the "Get info" portion of iTunes, but my phone doesn't show any lyrics. Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: Nevermind. It works when the phone is held vertical. If you have the phone tilted sideways in coverflow mode, it doesn't work.

1.1.2 has been successfully unlocked, hardware style =) also, for anybody that upgraded to 1.1.3 and wants to downgrade, you can use the newly acquired 1.1.3 secpack to do that. 1.1.2 otb software unlock will be here soon...

for the manual iphone control, do we need 1.1.3? dont want to install itunes 7.6 just yet so i cant test it for myself.

Very cool news, KFJ. I'll have to give that a shot.

My iPhone should be arriving today via FedEx. Quick question about activation and cancellation of my old service from Verizon: Do I need to cancel my account at Verizon before I activate AT&T on iTunes and move my number over, or is it the other way around? Does it matter?

When you dock your phone it will ask you a few questions. One of the question pertains to bringing your number from another carrier. Just follow those steps. NEVER cancel your service with your existing carrier prior to porting your number. In theory porting your number cancels service with your other carrier.

Ok, thanks! Glad I asked the question. :D
