K, so I'm at 1.1.2... I gotta restore to 1.1.1, then restore to 1.0.2, both through iTunes?

Then Then unlock that using... Independence (on Mac)? Or do I not need to do anything ON the Phone, and just keep installing the firmwares via iTunes? How and when do I revirginize it?

2 important things. What version is your Bootloader, and what version is your BaseBand.

You can get both by typing 'bbupdater -v' in the terminal. Either install Terminal onto your iphone and run it there, or SSH to it (install SSH via iNdependance).

You can get bbupdater from most virginizer packages.

You need to have 4.02.13_G or lower, and a 3.9 bootloader (which you should have).

AnySIM 1.21u will only work if those 2 conditions are met.

have any gaffers successfully hardware unlocked their 1.1.2 otb? i'm thinking of giving it a shot this weekend...

according to geohot, it doesn't seem like a 1.1.2 otb software unlock will be available anytime soon. :(

One thing people rarely talk about is how much audio interference the iPhone causes with other electronics (televisions, phones, etc.). You know, the "badabadabadaaa" sound.

Is it just me or is this something systemic to the iPhone or AT&T's network? I never had this issue with my Treo and Sprint.

I pick up those sounds over my cordless land line or car radio if my iPhone is too close to them. Like within a foot or something. I notice it when it's going out check for e-mail, but that's about it. I'd hardly call it a problem though.

Yeah, it's possible Jailbreaking will become a non-issue with the SDK, but as with anything Apple, my guess is there will be some hang ups that people complain about. And I may certainly be one of them, but I'm hoping there will be enough openness that I no longer need to worry about what the next firmware update will do to my phone. Funny, though, that the recent firmware update actually fixed some 'bricked' phones. :lol

Read that earlier too. It means they can start rolling out official apps very quickly after the SDK is released. I actually don't think it'll take too long before we see stuff either, as so many hackers have already been plugging away at apps on the iPhone. Can't wait to see what we get out of the deal.

I think it's AT&T's network. I've been using cingular/AT&T for a while, and all of my phones have done that so far..

It's not just AT&T. Any GSM phone will do this to some extent. The earlier poster didn't notice it on Sprint because Sprint is CDMA.

I would be shocked if there weren't multiple apps ready to go the day of announcement.

We still don't know what the restrictions will be, but Apple seems to be on the right track.

Yeah I have done it successfully.

It's difficult, and you will damage the phone enclosure.

Other than that, it's very difficult to brick the phone, even if you erase the baseband it's still resolveable. My advise is to install mobileterminal onto the phone and get yourself access to a windows machine running iBrickr before you start.

I need a shell on the iphone. as soon as it can ssh into my servers from an iphone I WILL BUY! any chance of this happening?

I hoping someone develops and ssh app through the sdk, I'd hate to jailbreak my iphone.

that's all I need though. right now the sys admin here can ssh through his blackberry and that damn it the iphone should be able to as well.

I just saw my new roomates jailbraked iphone and played isnake on it with the tilt sensor. I am now a believer. I just wish it wasnt so cluttered. Is the home screen fully custimizable when its hacked or all those icons thrown in there automaticly when the software is installed?

so are there any plans to bring the iPhone to other cell phone service providers, namely Sprint?

Short answer: No.

Slightly Longer Answer: 5 year AT&T Exclusivity, The iPhone is a GSM device, Sprint is CDMA.

Even Longer Answer: Sprint cannot currently afford to pay what Apple is asking and is hemorrhaging subscribers.

So true. Sprint is in big trouble at the moment. I kept wondering who was taking the hit in subscribers when both AT&T and Verizon said they had gained subs. I guess we found out when Sprint announced their financials.

The bad part is that Sprint has always solved these downturns by pushing out new technology, for example WiMax. But with these events happening they have scaled back their deployments and we may not see 4G deployments until 3GPP-LTE is ready to go in 2010 (or later).

Here is hoping places like Clearwire and similar will rollout despite Sprint (likely) killing off its WiMax team.

Yeah, that's a good point. Hopefully when Google buys the 700Mhz spectrum, it'll fill that gap mightily.

I hope they win the bid and just buy out Clearwire and the other smaller players, embed this technology in the Android platform and then the great tech-war apocalypse can begin because a WHOLE LOT of companies will be shit outta luck the day Google gets real spectrum.

They can't limit the spectrum to Android though can they? I thought that was the whole point of the rules they asked for?

Limit it, no - but if the tech is stock in everything gPhone related people's dream of a Google-run world would very rapidly become rapidly. Their stock would shoot up to $1000 almost overnight because with that spectrum they would be able to do all sorts of things. Hell they could launch a TV network if they wanted to.

It would definitely put MS in a huge bind, as Android would look really good to business. I would think it would work in Apples favor though. They could make a new iPhone that worked on Google's network, no carrier required.

Apple and Google have a very 'interesting' relationship these days. Jobs actually doesn't like Android (for obvious reasons) and there may be a divorce in this relationship if Google were to advance Android and that platform forward:

I used it last night actually. It was my first MMS message. It really blows not being able to receive them. My memory is terrible so I have to keep switching from the SMS app to Safari to enter that photo ID and password.

So with an unlocked iphone how do i get the music and photos on there?? Is it still done through itunes? Also another question...what if I use an unlocked iphone with ATT? Do I lose visual voicemail?

Yeah I hate that too. Is it just the iPhone or can AT&T's network not do picture messages on phones?

Cool. Is there a specific guide you'd recommend?

Also, how bad is the damage to the enclosure? Are we talking a scratch here and there or something more severe, as in the phone doesn't close back up properly?

Same, just use iTunes. Just be careful with updating the firmware if iTunes reminds you to do it when it finds new versions. When in doubt, don't do it -- go on the web and see if it's safe to update.

I don't think you lose visual voicemail if you're still using AT&T though I could be wrong. The $20 data plan for iPhone is for visual voicemail access too so don't know if it will still work. (unless you already signed into a 2 year with AT&T and unlocked it anyway)

I think I fucked up my iPhone. I updated the firmware and then tried to get rid of some of the previous apps, now when I tried to hard reset it just hangs on the screen with the Apple logo.

Is it fucked?

iPhone doesn't show up in iTunes anymore either :(

I think I bricked it :(
