I took about 200 pictures with my iPhone on a recent trip. These show up in the Camera Roll folder of the photos. When I save those to a specific folder called "Trip" in My Photos on my PC (running Win XP), I can transfer them to a "Trip" folder on my iPhone, but then there's a few problems:

1) When viewing the pictures in the "Trip" folder on my iPhone, the orientation of the pictures is off. Horizontal pictures will be upside down, and when I turn the phone to view them, the picture will keep flipping.

2) There are triples of all these pictures on my phone in the Photo section now. There is the original copy in "Camera Roll," a duplicate in "Photo Library," and the expected copy in the "Trip" folder which is upside down sometimes.

Any way to fix this?

I was able to sell my cracked iPhone 1.1.2 on eBay for 300 dollars in December and just bought a new one myself for the 100 dollar difference. Apple is ripping people off with the 250 price. That is a standard price that they charge you for fixing *anything* no matter what the repair is (aside from battery replacement). Even more ridiculous, this price is different based on what model iPhone you have. 4GB was 200, 8GB is 250, and I imagine with the introduction of the 16GB, the cost is even higher. How does that even make sense from a consumer perspective? And after spending hours dealing with customer service and even getting continual acknowledgement that much of the repair policy was illogical and cost was overstated, this is one issue customer service does not budge on when you eventually get to the person who makes the final decision. It is incredibly frustrating because I've met two other people and read so many stories of people who simply walk into Apple Stores and get their phones replaced for free on the spot with few questions asked or because they started crying. And I didn't feel as though I was entitled to receive a free replacement/repair, but without question the value of the screen is grossly overstated. Look into the selling prices on eBay, unlock/jailbreak it if you can to add some extra value, and just buy a new one yourself.

How are you importing your photos? I'm not remembering the Windows method, but when I import in iPhoto, there is a checkbox to remove them from the camera roll. Does that option not exist in the Windows photo importer?

As far as the orientation goes, are that correct in Windows? If not, can't you change the orientation there?

My sister just got an iphone and is wondering if she can(and how) import her non-itunes bought music on to her phone.

I see the sync option but whenever shes on itunes the page with all the iphone options has them blocked out.

Maybe that's the problem. I'm not using a program to import the photos onto my PC. I just copied the files over from the phone (as if it were a digital camera) and put them in folders in My Photos. The orientation is correct in the My Photos folder, so I don't know what the problem is. Is there an iPhoto equivalent for PC users?

You'd have to hack the phone so your definition of "safe" is relative.

Finally!!!! I'm going to get my iPhone fixed!!!! I posted months back when I dropped and cracked it at a party but it worked perfectly fine. Later though by December, the reception quality dropped significantly, and a couple weeks ago the top half of the screen stopped working!!! Over time I tried to get it repaired without paying the insane service price of 250 bucks but they denied every time even with heated arguments! So yeah, now I have to get it fixed so I had to my put my PS3 on Ebay to get the money which will come and I'm going to go to the Apple store right away get it fixed(btw do they usually just replace glass, switch it for a new phone, or what? Mine is in pretty bad shape so... yeah, i hope they replace ) and get a case.

Well part 2 of this whole thing, is that I found out that apparently broken iPhones go for a lot on ebay so I put it up on there and sold my broken one(sold for 250! )so now I'm just going to buy another new iPhone instead of just getting it replaced or repaired.

I do have a question though, when I get my new phone what do I do to transfer my account and everything off the other one? Just put the sim card in there from my old phone and hook it up to iTunes and then the rest is done? How do I un activate my other one?

Yep, it's easy and safe.

Just read up here and/or here. When you see the term "1.1.3 OTB (stands for Out of The Box)", it means you, since that's what's on the shelf now. It's pretty tough to brick your iPhone while unlocking it with all the tutorials out there.

The downside, however, is that Apple won't honor your warranty or give you any customer service if you haven't played by their rules. However, T-Mobile's customer service will give you the same help they'd give you with any "out of brand" phone, which they have a whole department for, if you ever have a problem on their end.

Weird, I've never heard of it referred to as that. Usually they call it PEAP or EAP security. It's basically just 802.11b/g wifi but it uses a different kind of login/authentication. The university where I work has started using it. Luckily, they've (so far) kept their standard 802.11b unsecured network on.

PEAP/EAP support is a highly requested feature for the iPhone/iPod Touch. While there hasn't been any indication Apple is working on it, I feel pretty confident they are. Mac OS X already supports it and many universities are starting to adopt it.

Ive been checking Youtube for vids of what is possible, and it is simple amazing the software and apps that have already sprung up from the community.

Both 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 can be jailbroken (and unlocked as well if you want) with a simple point and click app now:

I've been running an unlocked and Jailbroken phone upgraded to 1.1.3 for a while now (from before ZiPhone was released) and everything works fine. No crashes, no problems. Everyone I know with an iPhone has atleast Jailbroken it, with most unlocked as well.

Jailbreaking only makes software changes anyway, to allow you to write to the phone and access the filesystem. You can always just Restore in iTunes and revert back to a normal out-of-the-box phone should you ever want to. Unlocking has more potential for screwing up your phone (if you forget to turn Auto-lock off while doing the firmware update for example), but even then it's VERY hard to completely brick your phone anymore as the hacking community has such a good understanding of it all now.

ZiPhone might install these anyway, as they are the basics, but these are the first things to add through Installer:

BSDsubsystem
OpenSSH (to allow you to FTP into the phone)
Community Sources (to get a bigger directory of all the 3rd party apps available through Installer.app)

Then:

Term-vt100 - full unix terminal on the iPhone, incredibly useful if you need that sort of thing
iPhysics - version of CrayonPhysics for the iPhone, VERY nice little game and also a big 'wow' factor for people who want to see what the iPhone can do
ScummVM - perfect port of the Lucasarts emulator, play Monkey Island, Day Of The Tentacle, Goblins etc.
MobileChat/Apollo - these can be problematic on 1.1.3 at the moment, and haven't been updated yet, but are both good chat applications supporting iChat/AIM/MSN etc.
Minority Report - Pointless, but nice demo of multitouch zooming and rotation
Summerboard - Let's you totally customise the iPhone interface, wallpaper/icons/themes etc.
iSnake - Brilliant tilt-based version of Nokia's old Snake game
VNsea - VNC client, again incredibly useful if you need to remotely access other computers from your iPhone
Services - Nice little app with icons to quickly enable/disable WiFi/Edge/Bluetooh/SSH. Install this after Jailbreaking, as disabling SSH when you don't need it will extend battery life

There's also NES/Gameboy Advance/PlayStation emulators, which are in varying degress of progress. Plus some very well done Chess games. All sorts of things really.

As with anything like this, read up before you proceed so you understand the processes and terminology involved. And don't panic should anything go wrong, as people will have gone through it before. They've got it down to a very straightforward procedure now though, so it should be painfree. If all you want to do is install apps then stay clear of the unlock side of things, all you need to do is Jailbreak.

Jailbreaking the phone really shows you the potential of the device, it's amazing.

Unless some voodoo was done on the agreement/contract between Apple and ATT I'd call it BS. Besides, who wants an iPhone with that stupid Verizon UI plastered on it?

I'm hoping the introduction of the 3G version of the phone (hopefully later this year) is coupled with an increase to a 30GB version of the phone. I'd so pick that up as it would mean I would no longer need my Video iPod for anything anymore.

Ive been on the borderline for months.....and after doing a lot of reading and watching a ton of youtube, it was an easy call.

Plus the fact that you can always go back, its really a no loose situation.

the only sniggle is that there is a lot to catch up on and if you are not divesting yourself into really getting into the scene it might seem over whelming.

I had a hacked 1.0.2, was pretty cool until my phone started going crazy and so when I updated to 1.1.1 I didn't bother rehacking.

Kept it that way until 1.1.2. By then there were a ton of new apps that I could play around with but soon got bored of it again and my phone was going crazy again so updated to 1.1.3.

I'm fine with stock for now except my phone keeps dropping calls ever since I moved to 1.1.3.

I did look around quite a bit and I haven't seen anything about how to add music from different computers. Something like what Yamipod does for the older iPods would be great.

When you browse around on a jailbroken phone, you can see the media directories with the mp3s in them and all that, so it's strange that there doesn't seem to be a solution for this yet even on the jailbreak side.

Windows Live Mail (aka. Hotmail) doesn't work in Safari. Not on the iPhone or the Mac. It sucks and Microsoft should be ashamed of itself for pulling such serious IE only bullshit. You have three options:

1. You could try using Izymail. It's a service that will let you use Hotmail directly inside the iPhone's native mail application by being a proxy between the two. I believe it's free but I've not actually tried it.

2. Pay for Hotmail premium. That will allow you to support POP access for use in the iPhone's native mail application. There are instructions online how to do this.

3. Have your Hotmail email forwarded to a Gmail account and then set up your iPhone to read the Gmail account in the native mail app. Or, just use Gmail and ditch Hotmail all together.

Hotmail has the worst fucking back-end of any webmail service, and the least amount of features. No POP3, no IMAP, no forwarding, you cant use another e-mail address to send mail from hotmail (ie. if you want to consolidate your accts, massive ads all over the place, slow as fuck, etc. I cant for the life of me understand how people use this garbage, beyond the fact that they dont want to go through the small hassle of switching, or they just dont know any better. Half the time people cant even open my jpeg attachments through hotmail.

My dad was telling me he heard some company was throwing away any resume where the person's contact email address was Hotmail. It is one of the world's most hated services, probably deservedly so. Before it became "Live Mail" (back in the 10mb days) I heard MSFT executives trashing it at meetings. And remember this story?

From what I understand, the iPhone works with most all standard iPod connector accessories with some caveats. For example, sometimes you have to put the phone into "Airplane Mode" for it to work properly but I think this is rare. Also, most devices can't communicate data with the iPhone to show track data or to sync. They can only charge and play audio from it. Maybe someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, though.

As for 3G, there have been rumors since before it was released. Steve Jobs said that they'll support 3G eventually at the first announcement. When exactly is another matter. I've stopped paying attention to 3G rumors, honestly.
