Running off of Custom Firmware
Yeah, so I picked up a 60gb model yesterday. I fricken love it. Is it just me or did they improve the playback as well? I could swear that some of my favorite songs just sound BETTER. I didn't feel any difference when I went from 3rd gen iPod to 4th gen iPod w/clickwheel. But this time, it does sound better.

I love the new screen. It's not just the color, it seems like the font sizes were condensed a bit to fit more text on screen, not to mention the fact that album names now scroll (finally), not just track names.

Awesome stuff.

...You have...a LOT of money to spare...

Not really. eBaying the older models + student discount = not terribly expensive upgrades.

For example, I sold my 3rd gen 40gb model on eBay the week that the 4th gen 40gb model (w/clickwheel) was announced, for roughly $360 shipped. With a student discount, I bought the clickwheel model for $369 (restoring my warranty, in the process.)

I just eBayed THAT iPod for $351 shipped, and purchased the photo yesterday. It didn't hurt that I got a $100 Apple Store gift card for my birthday last month, and a $100 check to spend on whatever I want for Hanukkah.

Yeah, $600 for the photo was a big jump, but I ran out of room on my 40 over half a year ago. It's nice not to have to swap music on a weekly basis again! :D

The ~15 hour battery is nice, too!

what makes an iPod better than a normal mp3 player?

Define what a normal MP3 player is? Before I went the way of the iPod, I had a discman that played MP3 discs. I thought that was the neatest thing ever. I skipped out on the MD Players... new and proprietary formats that seem redundant and destined for failure piss me off. Lol.

Obviously, being able to access 10, 20, 40, 60 gigs worth of music with a couple of button presses is a huge break over swapping discs that can only hold a couple of albums at a time (in MP3 format.)

The way it looks and the interface.

Otherwise iRiver H300 series blows the iPod away.

(depending on who you ask, of course an iPod fanboy will say the iPod is better :))

well..there are other mp3 players that use internal storage. i'm not talking discman here. I think panasonic has one, Rio has one. I'm sure there are lots. I know i've seen em in stores. Basically why pay $400 for something I could pay $179 for.

From what I can tell, iPods are more expensive than some of the competition, and offer less features.

But I've also read horror stories regarding the competition, particularly in regards to interface and synchronization methods.

I haven't tried the others, honestly. I was considering dropping the iPod for a Zen, up until the gift certificate thing I spoke up above came about. Just because I was looking for more storage space for the buck. But I absolutely love the iPod photo! (And I'm not even an Apple fanboy.)

As for a $179 model. That's a different price range. You can also get an iPod with less storage for a cheaper price. And I believe Apple is readying an even cheaper line of Flash-based iPods, though those of course will offer much smaller storage space, less so than even the iPod mini.

I go for the large capacity ones simply because I want a complete protable media library solution. Otherise, I would have remained content with a flash player, or even my mp3 discman.

It's funny how getting an iPod basically influenced me to increase my digital music library. I had maybe 3 GB of my CDs on the computer. Now I have the whole thing full and have bumped against the 15 GB capacity of my iPod. D'oh.

well...I can't see myself needing anything more than 20 to 30GB. I think I only have a grand total of 17GB of mp3 at the moment anyways. Now if they played video files too, that'd be a completely different story.

Even iRiver fanboys will admit that the ealier mode H140 is better than the H300.

iRiver has more features and a more 'processed' sound.
iPod has a buy more features option and a more 'natural' sound.

Depends if you really want those options and want a more 'hi-fi' sound. I think in America the iRiver is cheaper than the iPod, here it's the other way around.

Agreed. I had like 8gb, maybe, before the iPod, and couldn't IMAGINE filling up all 40. I was DEAD wrong.

20GB would leave you with NO room to grow. You'd definitely not to go with 30 or more. Keep in mind, the box may say 30, but you're actually getting 27 or 28gb.

I agree that the Iriver is superior to the Ipod, but i dont like the 300 series, its way to bulky and the controls are just terrible (compared to the 100 series), the 100 series is over all much better

PSP will be less than $200!!!!

It will be a lot more when you add a gig of storage.

Is anyone going to seriously use this as their mp3 player? It seems like a pretty shitty choice to play mp3s. Movies might be pretty awesome on it though.

Not anyone who already has a dedicated MP3 player, obviously. Like those of us with iPods, Zens, iRivers, etc. I consider it a novelty feature, like PDAs or cell-phones with MP3 playback support.
