Is EGS tactic to just release free games every week without ever improving the store?

Because it seems like it. The roadmap on Trello is basically dead. They never release new features to the store. Ubisoft left their exclusivity deal, and they still doesn't have good publisher support. Yet they keep giving us free games every week for some reason.

Who knows what their plan is. I recently finished Dredge on Steam Deck which Tim gave me for free and it was great tho. Thanks Fortnite zoomers and uncle Tim.

The Store part works just fine. Download one of the free games and it fires up just as fast as Steam.
Games even get updated in the library.
I no longer have issues with EGS. I just don't go there to find platform stuff like achievements and friends.

At least until they run out of 'Rogue Like' games.

Seriously, it seems like its an endless, bottomless pit of a genre, presumably because its just about the easiest of games for small dev teams to do.

The stores fine, beyond 'it's not steam' i don't know what people's issue is, it's perfectly serviceable, download speeds are great.
That's the issue, it's just basic. It took them years to add a cart.

Being able to see which of your friends have and/or played a game on the store page is nice. Seeing user reviews on that platform rather than kicking people over to opencritic would be nice.

If Epic wants to beat Steam. They need to offer features Steam has had for years. It's not just a store but a community.

Yeh it feels vaguely like a ponzi that will collapse any second then u remember 90pc of the recent games are anonymous shit no ones heard of and u feel better again

Well, we are able to launch games in this launcher. I don't see how they will get people to choose their launcher when they never add new features.

Sergey Galyonkin (creator of Steam Spy) worked at Epic as the Director of Publishing Strategy, and helped launch the game store. He left in 2023, and to my knowledge wasn't ever replaced.

There are open positions like this one:

But this looks more like a design UX role, rather than an overall strategy of the Game Store. So my guess is, they're not really planning on improving things and will just keep doing the same thing they've been doing.

Still insane to me that Galyonkin of all people, the guy should should have known more than anyone about why Steam was successful, completely 100% fucked up Epic's strategy and focused on completely wrong things.

I mean. Works for Valve. Steam store is a shit show.

And no, just because you're used to a shitty UX, doesn't make it any less of a shitty UX.

Steam has family sharing and a WAY faster UI.
simply managing downloads on EGS is a nightmare. browsing your own games is slow, laggy, unresponsive and cluttered.

I would never ever buy a game on Epic.
the only usecase that the epic store has for me, is free games I play on my Steam Deck, by using the Heroic Launcher, so I thankfully don't have to interface with the actual Epic launcher all that often

It has a super unresponsive interface for me, often crashing or requiring me to relaunch to get the store page to load.

I presume it's an Electron app that's heavier on resources than it needs to be.

The store functionality is good enough for me, but what I care most about EGS is their rewards program. I've been using it a lot lately when topping up in F2P games, and those 20% in cashback really adds up over time. Hopefully they extend the program, since it ends in January.

Steam has lots of vestigial "features" that add clutter to the UX with no real benefit.. Those honestly need either a complete rework or a complete cull.

One of them imo is the curator system, basically useless in determining good games nowadays compared to how it started. There are probably many others if we start digging.

I could see the idea being for people to get attached to their EGS account, or at least keep the launcher installed, because they already have a decent library on it.
It's probably not going to make a difference when competing with steam, but maybe it will give them an edge vs other storefronts and launchers. Though as a secondary store I'd personally still rather buy games on GOG (if they are available) because of no DRM

The do need to fix the alphabet of the library.
A, An, The need to be delt with in the proper way.
It's fun to scroll down to T and see a dozen games that start of 'The one about the'.

I don't expect Epic to make their store any better. I remember seeing bits of testimony from the court case with Apple leak out - Epic was losing a shit ton of money with the free games they're giving away. That's why they've switched to only giving away these cheap-o indie games.

If they're losing money on their store outside of Fortnite, and they know they'll never be able to displace Steam, why bother?

I've bought half a dozen games from EGS because they were cheaper than Steam. I also play Save the World (Fortnite) with my son. As a means to download, install, update, and launch games, it works just fine. I've had no major issues with it.
