Is GAF too strict?

C'mon. That was an obvious joke wasn't it?

I would suggest an obvious joke an and offensive comment can be one in the same sometimes. I mean, NO ONE is calling for him to be banned and I seriously doubt he would or could be (much less should be) for that, but the comment did come across a little wonky I think.

I think her point was probably about his last sentence

And the irony that he had made an offensive post about women just prior to that.

I got what the problem was, it had nothing to do with the conversation ...... Just looked like somebody trying to get someone banned.

I think if someone was trying to get another poster banned they'd probably PM a mod rather than broadcasting it like that and hoping some mod saw it and agreed it was ban worthy.

I guess it goes to say that certain jokes are seen as jokes by one and not another, but deliberately quoting something that I posted that was not even close to offensive in comparison with Eggman's multitude of posts is just cheap and completely irrelevant.

Or you're just bad at telling them and Eggman is annoying.

oh for the love of..

She just saw your post above and decided to requote you from the other thread to point out the irony.

That's all.

Just get past this

I don't think GAF is too strict, it's too inconsistent. I don't mind if it's really strict, as long as it's strict across the board.

I'd say GAF could be stricter. More public humiliation of idiots, please. I'm talking avatar changes, name changes, tags, the works.

Better yet, bring back hellbans. I wasn't around for MAF's.

Bah, my thread got locked before i could explain the specifics of things. I still think one of them was doing it purposfully to get me to look but i guess ill know in the next few days.

If gaf is too strict it's usually your own fault to begin with (like my thread title).

Its gotten much stricter since I started posting here in 2000-2001, maybe because its people have gotten older, or its a business now. But it has lost a bit of something over the years. But for the most part its good. I just usually go to SA when it comes to hardcore pc gaming stuff/wrestling threads.

On the subject of offensive statements in the form of jokes:

"It was a joke!" is not a valid excuse for simply making racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. statements. I am sure it is quite likely that Dr Eggman was joking when he made the post to which Air Zombie Meat and Devolution referred; that does not matter.

And Kevin, I don't see what you're talking about. It is remarkably easy to look at a poster's recent posting history and see what they were banned for; I did this for years if I was curious. And if you really cannot tell, you can always PM a moderator to ask.

Depends, lately with all the rampant Sony fanboysim and every thread turning into console and list wars i feel the mods haven't being strict enough. But when you get banned for 1 week for saying the four letter c word, then i think otherwise.

Not sure what is happening with the approval process when people like Meeru are getting like 8 ghost accounts and other regular people are waiting upto 5 years to get approved.

I'm still a bit confused as per the jokes thing really. This is how it went down.

"Why do these women keep bending over in front of me?"

"Women are dangerous creatures. They try to manipulate you to make you do things in their favor. Waving their ass infront of you is one of the tricks."

Maybe I'm being obtuse but I can't seriously think that this is not an obviously sarcastic joke comment (of which there are many in GAF). Is this type of joking really not allowed? Fine if it is, but I'm a bit surprised.

no pun intended, I want Sentry to think hard about what he's asking
Obviously I don't think that a girl who bends over is looking for attention or 'wants me' (as many joked). I wasn't on my computer (mobile) so i didn't elaborate my case in the op enough (like none of the women being strangers to me) but my thread title was admittedly stupid/luring.

The question was more if she is spatially aware that her butt is right in my face. If i bend over in that stance (im talking slouching where the head's below hips/butt) i definitely would be weary of who's directly behind me.

But ot, it was rightly locked but i didnt intend controversy even if i brought it upon myself due to lack of context from my story (my fault) and silly title. Then again people rarely get banned for their intentions but rather what it actually looks like at face value (like eggmans post).

That's always gone on and always will, though. You cant exactly ban someone for their flamboyant fanboyism unless it becomes inflammatory, like derailing a thread (ex: wollan).

I think u mad. For you to single out one group of fanboys makes you look like one yourself. There's fanboys from every circle on GAF and any other gaming forum.

As a junior, I get nervous when I see threads where someone makes a clear, unambiguous joke that people then freak out over and act as if someone killed their pet when there is no way it personally offended them in anyway. But they feel like the mods are going to crack down on it, so they keep their outrage going because they are afraid they'll get banned for something else.

I see it a lot now and I saw it a lot as a lurker. That worries me much more than the mods themselves. If a random stranger said these jokes to you in person, you'd chuckle and go about your day and never think about it again. But when it is posted on a message board, it is the most offensive thing you can imagine. I don't get it, but that is the most worrisome thing about this board, I think. When guys start trying to project how progressive they are, it gets way too serious and bad things happen. It turns into 2 pages of back and forth over the joke or poster instead of the topic and a few people end up shut out for a while.

Hence Rivyn not being banned.

Hey i'm an anti-fanboy fanboy, I admit it. I don't give a fuck a about any of the big console makers. I just don't like it when people blindly cheerlead a multibillion dollar faceless corporation that doesn't give a shit about them.

People love to believe (no pun) and root for something. It's natural to want to justify your invesment, and in a lot of cases many years dedicated to a specific 'group'. It's almost religous at that point, as you have an incentive to NOT deviate, or else you'll feel like all that time/commitment etc was wasted.

But still, just like you can't ban someone who says their christain/muslim etc you can't really hate on a specific goup of gaming 'fanboys' either.

I used to think that GAF was too strict, but over time, and reading lots of threads and posts, I came to understand the necessity of such policies.

Even so, I can tell you that it used to be even stricter than it is these days.

I'd say policy has changed ideologically, but strictness has been pretty consistent. For example, I think the tolerance for dark humor has certainly tightened in recent years. Attitudes err on the side of protecting users from offense; if in doubt, take it seriously. Memes are generally quashed. I wonder if Wollan's classic red/blue/yellow/green men photoshop which earned him the tag "This is why I will never be banned" would actually be ban worthy these days, to give an example. Not trying to be obtuse - I honestly don't know. In the past, joking was safer, but junk posts or fanboyism or general stupidity seemed to be smacked down harder and with a broader brush. I definitely think moderation was more capricious a few years ago.

I'd liken the evolution of the moderation style to Lisa Simpson slowly taking over the nuclear power plant from Mr. Burns. I think it's preferable overall.

That guy was a good poster. SonyGAF hasn't been the same since.

Well but it does matter, to a degree.
I mean just like some of the banned words have a context in which they can be more or less approriate, a joke with the same idea can have a very different effect in a different situation and told in a different manner.
For example Eggman's post was (i guess intentionally, since that's his gimmick) very graphic and gross, so i bet if the same concept was expressed in a different way it wouldn't have get as much attention, from the mods or the users.
Whether or not someone finds "rapejokes" funny or not (don't want to get into the Tosh discussion here) i think everyone is susceptible to the form of it and, despite different sensibilities, there is a point where you can't even tell if it is one or not (this goes for other offensive subjects, too).
This is to say that it goes beyond the simple subject itself, and since it's very much a matter of context and form, there'll always be a clash between someone that is offended by something that others don't even see (neither of the two being in malice, mind you).

Personally i'm ok with some jokes being offlimits on GAF, whether i find them offensive or not, because it's not a comedy club and it's a large community, so it's alright, but i just wanted to point out that "it was a joke" it's not necessarily a way to try and say offensive stuff and get away with it, hoping to not get caught.

I have got banned once in 10 years. That was for posting a link to Lindsay Lohan's nipples. Even though I marked it NSFW, the rule was no nipples even in links. Other than that, as long as you are not a jerk it's easy to stay unbanned.

Oh I wondered why you had gotten banned. She has pretty nice nipples too.

Is this still a rule? Cause i have seen this a few teams recently with much more NSFW links (one in particular that was discussed quite a bit across 2 threads) that didn't result in bans.

Not trying to complain or anything i'm just honestly curious about if this is allowed or not now.

Oh and I stumbled into that swimming pool thread, I wonder if it's bannable if you link a site hosting NSFW pics but you gave a warning?
