You're not missing anything. It's just that if you follow a trail of posts that end in a ban, you sometimes see a story of escalation. Ultimately we are all in control of how we react but I sometime end up thinking "what's that guy's problem" and half of the time, it's not the guy who just got banned that I'm thinking about.
I'm not really complaining about the bans honestly. I'm wondering if people are noticing that some are fostering the disorder so it'll end up that way.

Looking at the Egyptian thread I really hate when users start posting stuf like: see ya!, this gun be good, the grandpa Simpson gif, popcorn gifs or bishop gifs.
It's like their getting off on an idea of a ban. It's a little gross and doesn't contribute anything. I'd much rather people just PM a mod and say hey can you look at this thread/post.

As a history major I find it interesting.
It's actually a rather fascinating and relevant subject in my opinion. The race of Egyptian people/rulers at different times in history tells us something about which foreign influences were prevalent during a certain time, and how that affected the development of Egyptian society, culture and technology.
If they point it out they can feel responsible for the ban. One moment of being the mod.

TBH i didnt really get the topic - if you go to Egypt now (ive been twice) most of the people look like tanned skin Arabs - like not Dark but not overly fair. I didnt really see the debate on what an Egyptian looks like (i only saw the first post of the thread so didnt see what all the arguments were really about)

I think GAF is dead in the middle when it comes to how "strict" it is. (Then again the general attitude of the forum is guided by its moderators and administrators.) Usually if you have a problem with it's perceived "strictness" then you just might be here just to post shit. From my experience GAF is very nice about freedom of speech, it doesn't really matter what you say as long as you present a viable argument and put your post in a respectful tone (Or a tasteful humor oriented post).
I have only been banned once since my membership started in 2009, and that was because I overlooked a meme ban and posted "Haters gonna hate" in a Starcraft II thread (Which I find funny in retrospect because I've seen people post that meme tons of times with no gray name attached.) Thankfully at the time I knew a ton of people from GAF already and talked around and got unbanned by the same moderator for having a post history in good standing. I believe this has been posted before, but the moderators are human and sometimes GAF can seem "stricter" at times than others.
Still love this place for how great all the discussions and humor are about everything and anything.

I think GAF is strict but that's a good thing, I only just got back from my banning (I deserved it) but that month gave me a real feel for how bad it would suck if i got perma'd

Just skimmed the last few pages of creepy-thread and I don't see the problem.. just a joke thread, close it and move on. I don't know the whole deal but if people are gonna get banned for posting those pics.. yeah, what can you do.

I think there's a world of difference between having weird ideas about race and history and being racist though. And sometimes the beauty of the Internet is in reading the crazy stuff that lunatics write. And the creepy thread was very obviously dodgy from the start and should have been locked day one. It's a bantrap.

I guess the best way to put it is that we have some discretion on how we treat those topics. You're right that oftentimes when we have topics like that where a large proportion of people are behaving badly, the topic will simply get locked. But banning some posters is always an option in those cases. And I'll also say that this topic did not have to be a "bad" topic. There are some topics that from their inception are going to be bad topics, where there is almost everyone and their mother knows that they will be locked. But I thought that there was plenty to discuss given the subject in that topic without the things that shanshan just mentioned. I do not know why posters expected to get away with it or thought that those things were okay.
bishoptl also happens to be an Administrator, so he's making a public example of them in a way that, say, I or other moderators would not.
