Yep. I've seen it happen. Sometimes people are absolutely indignant for no other reason than that they can be and I suspect it's due to the very phenomenon you're describing.

This is exactly how I've managed to be here 4 years ban free. Got spidey senses tingling.
Also the 'creepshot' thread was disturbing to me bc I have two teenage daughters and if I found out anyone was 'creepshoting' them. I'd probably creep around with a baseball bat.

He's not imagining it. In fact, there are usual suspects that are filled to the brim with faux outrage and constantly try to bait other posters. They're just as conducive to shitting up threads as trolls.
The best part is when they pat themselves on the back, "good riddance."
I didn't see the Egypt thread yesterday but I know GAF well enough to know not to post in race threads. They always get locked and people ALWAYS get banned.
However, I did see the "creep" thread. Browsed it and felt no need to contribute.

I knew something odd was happening when both threads were locked and stickied. The first not didn't make sense, but the second one was a clear as day. Holy shit, a mega purge is coming.
I have seen worse, but it's kinda bad. The creep thread is going to be a massacre though, I agree. I'll be shocked if anyone walks away from it. If someone does we may need to start a religion "the one Bish passed over" or something.

Hi, I'm the guy that was astounded by the discovery that the ancient Egyptians were actually black and after having a read through this thread I still can't see why people are so up in arms about what I said. The mexican comment is a Dave Chappelle reference that I'm really surprised nobody caught and the rest of it is just me saying it how I see it.
Nothing I wrote feels against the TOS as I interpret it, I know it says nothing racial but how else am I supposed to talk about the fact that I always thought the builders of the pyramids looked like this:

I don't know about the rest of you but thats a mind blowing discovery that really makes you question what it is that you think know about history.
If anything it's made me realize that any information you've ever been presented with in your life has an agenda attached to it which is why others have gone to such lengths to get that data into your cranium in the first place - The truth and the "truth" can often be diametrically opposed.
For one thing I am stunned that the accomplishments of an entire race have just been whitewashed out of history in one fell swoop like that, its astounding that things like that can happen and here I am 6000 years later believing the lies until a random bit of poking around about chinese pyramids (which was bought on by the Chappelle comment in the earlier sketch) bought up a whole different history.

This is where you get off track.
You might have a point that sometimes posters do not respond in the most constructive manner to the sexist or simply ignorant comments that certain posters tend to make, but the disgust is genuine. And for whatever it is worth, when I see one poster say something appallingly ignorant, and I see another poster respond angrily, I don't blame the second poster for being angry with the first poster.

From my perspective, the topics that you are talking about are echo chambers until posters with conflicting perspectives show up, and that is precisely what those posters you are complaining about are doing. It is not as if they are simply echoing each other's posts; they are engaging and interacting with people who disagree with them. There might sometimes be an unnecessary level of rancor, but that is not specific to those posters and is at least as much the fault of the posters whom they are engaging with.
And I know that I am sometimes placed in that category; or at least I argue the same positions as those posters do. I don't really view myself as being in an echo chamber when I participate in those topics, because I'm having a discussion / argument with people whom I disagree with. So I don't really get the characterization of those users serving as an echo chamber.

No dude, you are so getting banned for that one. I've read guns germs and steel and yes a lot of modern advances come out of the European, Mediterranean, and middle eastern regions. But there are hundreds of cultures and societies that have existed in that region over the millennia. It was a pretty ignorant blanket statement.
The disillusion comes from the European dominance during the colonial period, which exists very close to our modern era. Previous to that you saw cultures all over the world flourishing.

There is a vast difference between having a discussion, and holding council on opinions among people who already agree with you. You can identify these people by the use of "So, what you're saying is..." and having the resulting idiocy requoted by the next few posters slapping the initiator on the back, usually with condescending snark toward the post in question. And yes, either there is usually a healthy amount of faux outrage in these types of threads, or they lead really unhealthy lives. It's not good to get that worked up over variances in opinions, as long as they're not born from obvious, clear cut racist, sexist, etc mindsets.
For the record, the only thing you're guilty of is still liking Mariah. The 90s are way, way over. It's time to move on.

I state my opinion all the time on GAF as do others. But I think before I post things in this forum. Alot of members don't do that. They post stupid and offensive things and that's what gets them banned.

If by 'willing to fall in line' you mean 'not posting racist, homophobic or sexist shit' then yes I suppose so.

I consider myself a fairly moderate person on many issues (conservative by gaf standards, but moderate by most other measures) that has all but stopped posting his opinion on anything related to religious, political, or gender-related "discussions" due to volume of dead bodies those kinds of threads leave in their wakes, especially for people like me. For the few posts that I make in the gaming side of the forum, it's not worth coming over to OT and getting banned for expressing my personal opinions, backward as they are.
Those terms are immensely loaded and difficult to define. "That's racist" or "That's sexist" is practically a meme here said in jest because it's so easy to mudsling even when you're not being serious.
