Is GAF too strict?

Most of these mega purges that happen are OT threads. While I don't think gaming side is some beacon of rational thought OT sure as shit aint either.

Basically what I'm getting at. Neither side is perfect.

Well isn't it pretty self-evident why people would reason that it's dead?

I don't have an issue with people saying the Vita is dead (in my opinion it's doing very poorly at the moment), but it's the people who just argue over who's more "biased" towards whatever company, ignoring reasoning in favor of accusations, and repeating the same thing over and over again between threads.

"Wii U is not a next-gen system" is even worse, since it just devolves into people arguing over the meaning of "generation for twenty pages at a time.

Yeah, so? For some people video games are a passion, they're allowed to be upset about things related to them. That doesn't make them irrational. Also you do realize you're on the "Gaming Age Forum" right? Debates about video games should be expected.

It's odd to me that some people seem come here solely for the Off-Topic board.

I'm "passionate" about games (I guess, kinda?) but I really don't care if somebody thinks my favourite video game console is bad. I like arguing with people about things but I never actually get upset, because why would I. No one else's opinion is worth even 1/100th of mine.

In the OT I can understand why, say, a woman would be offended by sexism. In that sense the cause for upset and running around asking for bans is more justifiable.

At least people get offended about vaguely real things on OT. On gaming side you have people getting actually upset about things related to video games.

Most of the time people get offended on both sides because of the same thing, not the content of the discussion, but someone telling that there's something wrong with them.

To be fair, if someone is passionate about something then I'd say it's acceptable.

And there are forums out there which are much much worse in comparison, I think most of the discussion on Gaming (and GAF as a whole) is generally pretty level headed.

I'd like to think in most cases people are upset because of because whoever they're arguing with has some terrible logic and says dumb stuff, but you're right, that isn't always the case.

Regardless, plenty of dumb stuff happens on both boards.

It was an interesting thread. There is the moral issue and then there's the legal issue and its very interwined. People's different vies on privacy, symbols of sexual availability, and good old lookism arguments all come out, and it's very interesting (for me at least). However it was obvious that victim blamers and people more conservative like phosphorous would go. The people who made jokes surprised me because it's kinda hard to tell what's a jokey thread where those go unpunished and what's a serious one where mods go on a killing spree. I was certainly scared for myself as I was on the wrong side of the argument (in banhammer sense) and as growing exasperated at the amount of people stating that taking pictures of people without their permission was illegal (it isn't, least not in UK) or should be illegal if it wasn't already.

P.S I know this is a really, really, really dumb question but I have to ask.

Is creepshotting actually illegal? If so what law would it come under? I'm guessing harassment but I'm not sure.

I honestly think posting the pictures was needed to show that these are normal girls in normal clothing. Otherwise, yes, I think it would have been a lot more victim blaming than there was.

There likely would have been less "Head nod"-style gifs posted though, which appeared to get a number of people banned. The result ended up being a bunch more creepers seeing photos of people that likely didn't want to be seen.

Again, not saying Sentry should be axed. I just don't think that's the way to go when condemning something.

I'm not attacking GAF in comparison to other forums, I'm just saying I find it really amusing when people say "hey people are being mean to Vita a lot of the gaming side, I wish they'd get banned!".

I still don't think there's any need to ban a person unless it's personal insults. Banning someone for making fun of a video game system's failure is just...like, why?

I think it's illegal if you take pictures of someone's private parts in most places, but otherwise not.
Though if someone catches the creepshotter in the act, it might then constitute sexual harassment.

I don't see a problem with discussing the issue. The pics were probably unnecessary through.
How can you discuss an issue if you're not at all familiar with the source material, though? I for one had no idea what 'creepshots' were, and I don't think I was alone in that.

And as fiction said, there would be even more assumptions. Hell, even with the pictures a lot of people assumed the creepshots were always of women dressed in yoga pants, which isn't even close to accurate..

It becomes a problem when folks constantly repeat "VITA IS DEAD" in every Vita related thread, it can get annoying and occasionally derail a thread. If someone's taking it personally though, you're right.

He's been banned 7 times, including once this year. No one has "immunity" :p
So have you thrown this around with the other mods?

How about a rap sheet for every poster? A auto link to the infringing post so that other users can go "huh that guy got banned for this post, better not do that!" and takes a whole lot of guessing out of what happened.

Another thing is, since most of these bans are really just "probations" would it be possible to allow users to contest bans with the moderator as long as they are civil about it?

Right now there is a huge disconnect between users and mods that seems to not allow or make it easy to communicate with them.

GAF tends to be level-headed, but there are some who just are a fountain of loaded threads and pointless accusations that taint everything they touch. The ones who swoop into a rational thread and ruin everything will the same bile they've spouted twenty times before are the worst. Thankfully, the main suspects seem to have been juniored or banned for now.

Because it gets to the point where you cannot have a rational and decent conversation about the system without people chanting and cheerleading about it dying, which does nothing to further the conversation in a good way. Pretty much the only place to have that conversation is in the official Vita thread.

Adding links to the names and and seeing how each member departed is perfect for this thread. It teaches you how to conduct yourself on GAF.

This thread should be stickied.

Hardly. "I love booty"...

really?

edit: I see the post linked with the name may have not been the one they were banned for. If that's the case, I redact my example above...

Oh, in an instance like that then I'd agree with you.

Unless the posts were just repetitive forced memes being repeated over and over again by numerous posters in every thread - but I'd assume that a mod would step in by then and try and steer the topic towards more constructive discussion.

I don't understand why the term "banned" is used for a temp ban. I guess it's just the nature of the Vbulletin system or something.

so you want this to be SA?

Its because they are saying "Lol Vita dead" and are derailing the thread from any objective and intelligent conversation that could have otherwise taken place.

And they're usually saying it in topics where it's on topic. If somebody went "lol vita dead" in the...I dunno, Assiassin's Creed Vita OT when it comes out, then fine, but most the time people say that shit in threads about how the system is failing.

Pretty much the only place to have that conversation is in the official Vita thread.

It's funny because both times I've gone into the Vita dedicated thread the past couple of days, the discussion has been about how it's the only good Vita thread and how the rest are polluted with evil haters.

Your OP already linked them to the news story. That was really all you needed to get the discussion going. If members wanted more info they could've just googled the term. Also, would those pics be considered safe-for-work? Pictures focused on woman's butts? Not at my job.

I'm not blaming you, I'm just saying.

a witty joke about the vita =/= "lol vita is ded"

If you're clever, making a funny quip about it than that's fine, but if you repeatedly just parrot "BRAWK THE VITA IS DEAD BRAWK" it's not entertaining AND doesn't contribute the discussion.

SA has those nice features because it does a lot of bannings/probations. As much as you're obviously meaning that what I suggested is a bad thing, it would be a good thing for NeoGaf

We've had this discussion several times in this thread. Bottom line is that it ain't gonna happen.

Why?

If the response is "It's too much work" that doesn't fly with me. Evillore just went on a fieldtrip, he can put the money back into the forums.

EviLore also owns the site, so he has that luxury. I don't remember what the reasons against it were for because I honestly don't care. So someone else can explain it or dig through the thread, because I won't.
