Any good bartender will be more than happy to help you out finding a good cocktail or liquor that fits what you're looking for. I appreciate it when people defer to my experience.
If the bartender acts annoyed, go spend your money elsewhere. There are a lot of great bartenders out there, and more than a few shitty ones.

I never know how to order a proper mixed drink at a bar so I basically just drink beer. If I order an Old Fashioned I gotta specify what bourbon I want or just let the bartender go at it?

I'd order 90% of these drinks if I wasn't an idiot and knew how to act like I know what I'm talking about...

In most places I've been to you can simply order the mixed drink you want and they'll usually have a default brand they use to make it (usually one of the cheap ones).

If you want them to make your drink with a specific brand you have to ask for it

I can’t stand the taste of tonic water so my go to gin drink is a Gimlet.

Also big fan of Boulevardier(Negroni but with Whiskey instead of Gin)

I gave up the drink but an old favorite of mine was rum & lemonade. High quality vodka on the rocks is nice too. Bourbon is a great solo drink as well.
If I had to only pick one cocktail though, I’d go with a Manhattan.

I do prefer a bunch of other cocktails old fashioneds, dirty martinis, etc etc. but when it comes down to it, a G&T is the most refreshing/best overall.

as for lowest caloric drink I will say a vodka/gin and soda is less afaik ( granted soda water is essentially water as OP semi-mentioned, I still think vodka is lighter in calories than gin is, albeit less flavorful...)

Not a gin and tonic fan at all.
Depending on my mood Long Island Ice tea, Margarita, or Rum/Coke.
Mostly stick to beer though.

Bulleit rye, Luxardo, Martini Rosso, Bathtub cherry brandy and Peychauds bitters

Its only available in one place, but has become my favourite cocktail over the years. It's a short drink, think along the lines of a dark cherry old fashioned and you are part way there.

I also really like the French House cocktail served at Hawksmoor in London. It is the only gin cocktail that I do like and its amongst my favourites. Gin left to infuse with fine cut strawberries for a week, pour some out with a dash of tarragon. Simple but so good.

Long Islands are good for one thing, getting drunk. Most of them are poured with rail liquor and they taste like crap, but if you're just looking for the most booze for your buck you could do worse.
When somebody orders one at my bar they are either a freshly turned 21 or a grizzled old drunk.

Campari and Galliano are the two bottles that almost every bar has, but never get poured.
In 20 years I've made a handful of Campari cocktails, never even poured an ounce of Galliano.

It's definitely up there, especially with cucumber, whenever I want something not sweet but not as strong a scotch that's my go-2. On the sweeter side but also excellent is White Russian (with whole-milk instead of cream, trust me) and of course any wiskey lover would be remis not to mention Old Fashioned.

Props for actually having Tom Collins in the survey. I love that shit but people always tell me it's an old man drink.

Gin and Tonic is great too.

Also like Mules.

Booze is pretty alright.

Pretty much if you ask me. I'm mostly a beer guy but a G&T is my go-to cocktail any time of the year. Lately I like to use Beefeater for the gin.

Another gin drink I've enjoyed is called The Last Word.

Long Island is what I order when I suspect a bar is skimping on the liquor/watering things down. Hard for them to do that when the order requires them to pour like five different liquors into the glass. Otherwise yeah I'd prefer something a little more tame.
