Is it uncouth to follow Community Threads that you're not a member of?

It's a not a private forum so you can do anything you want. It's a bit hypocritical of the sites existence to suggest otherwise. In the event someone grabs your post from a community thread you seem as "private", you're out of line because it's a public forum at that point. You don't have much ground to stand on.

*nods grimly*

I occasionally lurk animegaf and lgbtqgaf but I very rarely post. I feel like if I want to be part of that community I'd have to post a lot more and me not that kind of orc. Also my sex life is nonexistent and I don't watch much animu :c

Not like criticizing you or whatever, but there are probably people in LGBTQGAF who haven't a sex life too. :P

I sort of don't understand the sea-lion comic. To me it seems like that sea-lion is acting like a dick so does that make me racist? I like sea-lions but that particular specimen acted rudely no matter how well-spoken he was. And I'm 100% talking about the comic, any other connections to gaf are unknown to me. If someone acted like that I'd be bummed out.

Again, it's not about rules, it's about courtesy. There's a similar thing w/ Twitter - Twitter is technically an open space, but that doesn't mean that you can (or more specifically should), for instance, retweet them against their wishes.

Lol, that's ridiculous too. Public retweeting IS inherent to what Twitter is and how it works. Do people ask permission for every retweet of a famous person?

It's not meant to be an allegory for racism despite the woman being "racist" in not liking sea lions; sea lions, in this case, are just an opinion that happen to be personified by their likeness. It's criticizing the "super persistent predator" types that'll keep haggling people over their opinions asking for some kind of objective backing behind them even though they're, well, opinions. For example:

Person 1: Halo's alright, but I really hated Halo 3.
Person 2: Why is that?
Person 1: I don't know, man, it just didn't click with me. Didn't feel right.
Person 2: Can you provide some grounded evidence in your favor? There's no reason for you to dislike it.

And so on and so forth.

Non-British folk should avoid BritGAF. They'll either ignore you, mock you, or just rip you to shreds. And then they wonder why only a small handful of people post in there.

Also, the LGBT+ thread can turn sour pretty quick when people get salty over someone else's personal life choices.

Aah yes now it actually makes sense. Thanks.

Not to mention it just breeds weird insularity. I don't get why some communities act like the rest of GAF can't see them when they start shitting on people for other threads and posts. Feels a bit cowardly.

And yeah, the sea lioning thing has always rubbed me the wrong way. I understand the point to a degree, especially in context—there were always GamerGate supporters more interested in arguing than actually being enlightened, and even if you provide sources they'll keep harping on you in a passive-aggressive way—but it also seems like it's used as a cudgel to silence and shame people who aren't as engrossed in a topic as you. You're not going to reveal the crap that some women have to go through because of their sex by holding up a hand and getting offended they don't know your experience.

AS to the point in the OP, I regularly lurk in threads that I have no connection to, because I might as well expose myself to people and ideas that aren't similar to ones I'll find normally in my real-world life. Sometimes it's to chuckle at and entertain, sometimes it's to inform and broaden my horizons.

I'll admit I'm often a lurker when it comes to some community threads. In particular the "The Black Culture Thread". I do it because I find many of the posters offer a perspective to things that I, as a white person, may overlook. I don't ever post though, because it'd make me feel like I'm invading or something.

I haven't cheated recently. If I had, however, it would be nothing more than a case of not batting an eyelid, a shrug of the shoulders, and getting on with life.

People getting so bent out of shape over sex with someone who isn't your SO. Mistakes happen, folks, get over it. The urge to be desired and have intimacy is part of human nature. If your SO is away, and those urges rear their heads, and you're intoxicated, then you will do what must be done to fuel those urges.

Nicely done given the context of this thread.

Biforce is a very passive aggressive and dramatic poster, he used up all his goodwill in Britgaf (where he was treated very well until the end, to the point where he was lent money by one user) and it looks like he's done the same with LGBT gaf :/ . Just too sensitive.

Off topic:

We really should have a referendum on Gaffers lending money to Gaffers.

Sometimes it's allowed, sometimes it's not.

I'd rather have it banned.

Don't tell the Black Culture thread but I am secretly a white man gathering information to share with my other melanin deficient brethren.

Happens in MMA threads all the time. Enter an MMA thread recently to talk about fights and fighters, get accused of transmisogyny.

I just took a look at the MMA community thread and I don't see anything like this. Searching back through the thread for anything related to Fallon Fox (I assume this is about her), I find a few references to "the gaf hugbox" and "sjws" but that's about it. Nobody brigading the thread to yell about transmisogyny.

I see there were two threads yesterday about Ronda Rousey, one about whether she could really beat Mayweather in a fight, as she said in her AMA. Zero mentions of transmisogyny in that thread, several mentions of Fox, all relating to whether Rousey is willing to fight her or not. The other thread is about the AMA in general. Aha! Paydirt! A bunch of mentions of transmisogyny, and Fallon Fox (and also Sandy Hook conspiracy theories, which apparently Rousey believes in). And I see that you contributed to that thread mostly by complaining about the person talking about transmisogyny, as you've also done here.

Maybe you should've also posted in the thread about Rousey fighting Mayweather if you wanted to talk about Rousey fighting Mayweather? Oh, I see that you did, and without receiving any accusations of transmisogyny.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I love seeing new people in community threads. Every one's a potential new best friend. Just make sure you read up a bit so you can kind of understand where people in the thread are coming from.

I hear they rack up numbers and deeds in community, by the horse load. Dark recounts of eldritchian reachings. I dare not steer my gaze upon such augurs of horror.

Why not; I don't even drink a six pack a day anymore because once an alcoholic always an alcoholic but I still post stream of consciousness bullshit in drunkgaf every day thanks to my new friend epimedium enriched tea, the all natural lifestyle enhancer
