That's a whole lotta crap (and ports) on both lists. Sony and Nintendo both need to step their game up.

Technically, it can run all the PSP home-brew software unchanged, but people have not found a consumer friendly way to launch the hacks yet. Sony removed those few PSP games that were known to be exploitable.

Sony is working on PS Mobile SDK for developers, which would allow people to program their Vita for other purposes, like this PC virtual desktop program for Vita:

The inevitable haters will tell you no, but really if there are at least 3 games that you know you'll play the shit out of get it. It's great hardware and despite the no games meme bullshit it has some good titles. Check the vita thread for some of those. If I were you though, I'd wait for that AC Liberation bundle. That white vita looks hot!

While I would agree with you about that Vita list being mostly ports, there isn't any crap at all on either list. All 20 of the games he listed can be called quality titles IMO.

I agree that they need to step their games up though. Japan 3DS is sooo far ahead of NA and EU 3DS and Sony isn't doing much for Vita. :(
 
Basically if you know you want one and can afford it, buy it.

If you're just curious/bored/impulsive and are looking for other people to justify buying it, you probably shouldn't buy it.
 
I'd say no, you should only pick up a handheld if there are 2 titles you really want.

For me it was Gravity Rush and all of my PSP games on a sexy OLED screen with filtering etc. It's worth it if you're a big PSP owner even if you aren't interested in any original Vita games at the moment.
 
I've been patiently waiting for another batch of Vitas to show up on Amazon Warehouse Deals. They start at about $165, and people have reported back with nothing but good news regarding the condition of the system.
 
If you have the extra money and there are games you want on it, get it. If not, then wait.
I got mine at launch, and still love it. :]
 
nope. i bought mine only with the intention of playing ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 and later 1st and 3rd party games. for the first few days, i was seriously excited. it looked sexy, graphics were nice, controls/gamepad were surprisingly good and miles ahead of the 3DS, etc. then sonys E3 conference came. boy, that totally killed any interest i had in the upcoming year. felt crapped on by sony. no games (rumored or upcoming) excited me. i didnt want to wait until 2013 to use my vita again. after thinking about it for a while, i returned it a few weeks later (30 day return policy) back to amazon.

to be fair, i havent even touched my 3DS since i beat ocarina of time 3D last year, but there are far more DS (yes DS) games that interest me than vita/psp games, and i had played them all on my 3DS last year. honestly, i had no place for a vita. it was too big to put in my pocket/carry around, couldnt play wherever i was going (either i was driving, or i was with friends, etc), and at home, i had all my consoles and PC to play on so why restrict yourself to a handheld? not to mention, most of the games on the vita dont even interest me, and that is a personal preference.

i wouldnt buy one until you can find it for less than $200 (i found mine through amazon warehouse deals) and if you see *at least* a few games that you would definitely buy. the proprietary memory card was also another annoyance, but luckily i didnt have to buy one because i only had ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 (the jill and shuma-gorath dlc both save directly to the game cartridge, so you dont need a memory stick!).


tldr - no, save your money either until a new revision comes out or wait until you can get one for under $200 and ONLY if you like a few games to go with it too (dont get a vita just because of one game).
 
Is there still going to be a Bioshock game on Vita? I haven't been following Vita news very closely but I'd definitely be interested in that.
 
I was feeling a bit down on my Vita purchase but Gravity Rush has shifted my opinion and I'm about to pick up MGS HD at lunch for a flight I have on the weekend. PS1 games being added in the next couple of months will be another bonus.

I'm pretty slow at working through games so it's working well for me but it may not be the same for you if you burn through them fast.

Both got off to a slow start but, to be fair both system's have some games upcoming that look promising that aren't in that list. Not to mention that list isn't a bad starting point. There are also some great downloadable title's available for both.

In my opinion, yes. Motorstorm RC, Lumines, Gravity Rush, and Uncharted for sure make it worth it. Then there's Hot Shots Golf and Super Stardust as bonuses.
 
Was at Target, they were offering Uncharted and 2 screen protectors free with the purchase of a Vita. I passed on it because:

- I will never, ever again buy a mobile device that doesn't have storage built in. The Vita should come with 4GB SSD built in, at the very least.
- There's really only 2 games I currently really want for it, those being Uncharted and HSG. Not enough to convince me to buy the machine, even though if I bought it I would end up buying more games than those.
 
No, but only because the Western future doesn't look that bright, and despite all the persistence by Sony to the contrary they have to do SOMETHING to jump start this thing. Unless a absolutely super hard core must have hits I'd say you'd be crazy not to see how things play out.

IMO there is no way in hell this system is still $250 a year from now.
 
If you are on the fence and the loss of the $300-400 startup cost isn't going to break you, i say buy one along with a game or two + mem card (i'd get 8gig minimum). It has some great games, some compelling releases coming in the next 6 or so months, PSP backwards compat (via PSN downloads of course) and soon PS1 game support. It's just a true joy to use, the hardware is beautiful. You will find things to like about it.
 
I kinda want to want one, if that makes any sense.

I hope it somehow picks up a bit of steam and and a couple titles come out that I feel like I can't miss and then I'll jump. But right now I'm fine with waiting.
 
Usually, the way I see it:
-If I like it and think is worth it; I buy it
-If I dont like it and don't think is worth it; I don't buy it.

In this case, is a videogame hardware.
Go around, look for a list of games it has and if it has games you are interested (not games other tell you you might enjoy); then go for it.

I mean, if it was for this forum (and countless others) I'll have every game related hardware; but I also wouldn't have any.
Since every one of them has great games..and every one sucks and has no games. :p
 
I know I'll get one eventually, but it's just not enough for me to justify a purchase now, so I think you should wait a while and see how things go

Always the most simple answer. The game selection is all that matters and everyone giving a definitive answer is either saying based off of personal opinion about the game selection or some misplaced strong emotions about the Sony as a whole.
 
Except a few minor issues, hardware is great. Game library is huge if you include PSP and (hopefully soon) PS1 games.

There are a handful of decent Vita exclusive titles, but several more in the pipeline.

If you buy it now at full price, you might feel burned. If you get a good deal... let's say $199 or less (especially if it includes a memory card), go for it. I would not recommend you spend $250 + memory on this thing right now. For that, you really need to have a very solid list of upcoming exclusives, which is just not the case at the moment.
 
Personally, I love it and believe it was worth it. I am also a huge wipeout and hot shots golf fan though. Those along with Pixeljunk Monsters have eaten up hundreds of hours already. It all depends on what you want to play.
 
Unless it has specific games that you must have, I would say no.
I was able to get my hands on one two months ago since someone on CL was selling it really cheap.
I pulled the trigger a little too quickly since after I got home and got to screen its amazing array of colors, I realized that there were no games on the horizon that I was thirsting for.
Sad to say I sold it a few days later.

I'm enjoying my Vita a lot, but the screen has waaay too much contrast. The darks are much too dark. There are times in PSP games when I can't see things I'm supposed to be able to see, because shadows are pitch black, instead of just shadows. There were even parts of Gravity Rush that were so black that I couldn't see where I was going.
 
I'm actually surprised with how much I enjoy my Vita. It's basically relegated my 3DS to sitting in a drawer since I got it. The Vita hardware is really well put together, and the screen is totally awesome. It's actually become my go-to Netflix and ripped movies machine because of how great things look on the screen. And the browser is decent enough to act as an iThing replacement in a pinch.

And for a system that apparently has no games, I've actually had a pretty decent amount of stuff to play on it. Wipeout, Uncharted, Gravity Daze, Hot Shots, and Mutant Blob Attacks have kept me pretty busy since launch. Plus all the PSP games I've picked up for cheap that I have yet to even begin to play. I just went and picked up 4 Atlas RPG's for under 30 bucks yesterday. Ya, they aren't Vita games, but I haven't played them before so I'm not sure if that really matters.

So I say go for it, especially if you can find a good deal. The back catalog is great and pretty cheap, and there is already a decent amount of Vita games out there if you are interested.

I know a lot of people aren't excited about ports but I'd be sold on Vita if it was able to pick up a healthier list of spinoff titles (along the lines of its Sony franchises and the upcoming COD and Assassin's Creed titles). I think I'd like to play more bite-sized versions of the console/PC games I enjoy on the Vita with its twin sticks and relatively strong visuals.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of most of Sony's IPs and I don't know if there's going to be a flood of 3rd party spinoffs arriving after COD and AC -- Activision and Ubi were probably committed to those well prior to the system's release and subsequent slow start.

Now if there were an Arkham game, Gears of War (or something similar from Epic), MoH, Max Payne, etc. on the way, I'd pick one up, but right now I'm doubting the 3rd parties who might have been on the fence are all that likely to jump in unless COD and/or AC turn out to be breakout successes/system sellers.
 
How many games do you have from digital distribution from PSN on your PSP? If the answer is more than five, I'd say go for it. The Vita's screen destroys the PSP screen and it makes things that much more enjoyable, especially rpgs or games that used the Dpad to control camera and you remap it to the right stick.

I have only four PSV games on it, but my PSP backlog plays a lot better on this than on the PSP.

Actually that's good. OLED does true blacks while the screens on all PSP models were just LCD's which couldn't replicate blacks and used different shades of gray.
 
If you are not interested in playing PSP games and don't shit money, then no.

Wait for more games to come out and until then you'll get this beauty for cheap. It's quite a dilemma: the hardware itself is compelling and powerful, but there aren't many games that show that.
 
Not yet I think.. unless you have spare cash lying around. I really want it to be though, it's quality hardware and an amazing OS. It really deserves to be successful.. but times have changed.

If only it had more dev support. If only Capcom would release Monster Hunter / Resident Evil / Lost Planet for it... it would already become a killer device for me. The tech has so much potential but there doesn't seem to be any momentum. It's really frustrating.. reminds me of when the Dreamcast was dying.
 
Mortal Kombat, Marvel and Metal Gear Collection already made it worth it for me. Waiting for FF X HD and I will be forever happy.
 
At full price? No. 100x no.
At around $150-$170 (eBay/Amazon Warehouse deals)? Maybe.

If you missed out on the PSP (like I did) and you're interested in at least 5 Vita games, then I'd recommend it. Netflix and (soon) Crunchyroll on that OLED screen are also a plus. If you had/have a PSP and have played most of the "must-haves", then I say you might want to wait it out.

Isn't that what the color-something-something option in the emulator's menu for, i.e. compensating for the OLED's strong color saturation and contrast?

I know it works for regular colors, I'm not sure about blacks though.
