The girl I'm talking to mentioned today that I say "legit" two or three times every hour. I looked through a lot of my passed texts and realized that I do say that word all the time.

I pondered that for a few minutes before realizing that "legit" is one of the most legit words in our current vernacular lexicon. It's a casual, all-purpose word that implies positivity. Nowadays, the word "legitimate" really just refers to something that's within the boundaries of the law or moral acceptance, but "legit" has breathed new life into a less-used word. Legit can refer to anything good. An interesting action film is legit. A particularly delightful hot pocket is legit. A fun day trip is legit. "Legit" is legit.

Is there any slang word, besides "cool", that can be used so casually, in so many situations?

She will not continue to talk to you if you keep doing this. She was warning you, and not simply making a casual observation.

I have never used that word in conversation or in writing. Sounds a little immature.

Cool is still perfectly serviceable and sounds better IMO.

"Fuck" is the best all-purpose word there is.
It can be used for just about everything.

Kind of like "smurf," I suppose.
Only less dated.

Also:
Cool > Legit

Hate the word "legit" when it is not used for what it actually means.

"Is that a legit copy of the game?" is okay.

"This movie is so legit!" is not okay.

They could be using it as shorthand for 'legitimately great'.

I generally only like 'legit' if used sparingly and with some vague sense of irony, like how using silly slang is sometimes fun when applied to really stuffy things because of the contrast, but in casual conversation it seems a bit juvenile to me for some reason.

I should add that I started saying "legit" ironically, but it slowly weaseled its way into my everyday lexicon.

The use of legit on gaf has been trending, which means that my awareness of my dislike for it is rising.

Actually, I like option two, but not one.

For one, I'd prefer legitimate.

I personally can't NOT think of "2 Legit to Quit" when i hear that word. I think that song "legitimately" killed off the use of that word when i was growing up.

No, that distinction will always be held by the word fuck. It's uniquely versatile and effective in almost any situation.
