Is Mainstream Hatred Of Anime Growing?

Also, while I understand your complaints (I've certainly made them myself) about the show they're a little misplaced. You're watching a show designed to pander to otakus and then complaining that it features otaku pandering content.

I don't see why a particularly odious show should go scott free because it's intent is to be odious. Light is the best disinfectant; shine it on NGNL and prevent future shows of this caliber.

You're right that there's a certain myopia involved, but the bigger problem with the question is that it suggests if you wanted to tell such a story you'd even consider telling it in an anime. For the most part, you wouldn't. If you wanted to discuss those ideas you'd do it in a medium that made sense for the material, such as literature. If you were so inclined I suppose you could even make a manga, but that would require artistic talent. What you wouldn't think is "ah, anime is the best medium for this story" because it isn't.

I'm confused why you think that a visual medium isn't good for a Japanese equivalent of The Wire or Breaking Bad, considering both of those are in the visual medium (and specifically speaking - not literature).

Well there's certainly nothing wrong with complaining about it or brining the problems up for discussion. However, In reality, it's just another show in a long line of shows that prominently feature sexual fanservice. It did fairly well for the Studio and there will definitely be a second season, so it was basically a success. It's just catering to it's audience.

Lots of things are in a visual medium. As I've explained in a number of posts, it's not the medium that matters but business of producing anime. That business precludes the creation of such works.

There was a time when the mainstream didn't hate anime?
Yeah, around 20 years ago, when the mainstream had no idea what "anime" was. Not that the mainstream actually knows all that much these days, but it's really hard to hate something if it doesn't even have a label.

In the UK I'd say no, but that's mostly because:
1. People in the UK really don't know what anime is. Out of sight out of mind.
2. It's not taking people's jobs.
3. It's not made by the bankers.
4. It's not from the Middle East.

It started when anime fans began acting like this, courtesy of SNL's "“J-Pop America Fun Time Now!”:

and continued parodies such as this:

Combined this with the death of anime director Satoshi Kon, the fact that Yoshiaki Kawajiri has had his directing career shelved in favor of creating storyboards, and Hiroyuki Kitakubo going MIA. Real ink and cells from the 80's/90's have been replaced with digital - diminishing quality and making it cheap. Voice acting is unrealistic, there is always one character that has to have the squeaky high-pitched cute voice. Add the fact that Hollywood and the general public got creeped out early on with an industry that produces animation that incorporates scenarios of pedophilia and unnecessary sexual innuendo - there's your answer. That's a wrap folks, anime simply turned into a joke.

This.

Anime fans will swear up and down otherwise, but the truth is that I've never met one who wasn't creepy or severely maladjusted in some way and so it's pretty easy for me to dismiss them. All of the ones I saw in high school and college were usually unattractive/obese and awkward with poor hygiene, never had girlfriends, and were super obnoxious and wanted to shove all of their spiky-haired naruto ninjas and moe waifus down everyone's throats because they thought enjoying something "foreign" somehow made them edgy hipster connoisseurs when they were just circlejerking over cartoons.

It was always obvious to me that it was just a hobby for miserable, socially-stunted losers and emos who used Japanese cartoons as an opiate to distract themselves from being depressed and a shallow pretext for forming friendships with each other because they couldn't navigate normal human interaction otherwise. Everyone stayed as far away from them as possible, especially in college because watching cartoon as an adult (and not just that, but TELEGRAPHING it to other people as LOUDLY as possible) is the biggest red flag imaginable that you're a sexless manchild. There was a guy on the floor or my dorm that we would never invite to parties because he wore nothing but Dragon Ball Z shirts and smelled like he hadn't showered in a month and we all laughed at him behind his back over it.

With all the articles I've read on GAF about how Japanese anime and video games are catering to pedophiles and how anime fans have waifus and watch "moe girls" shit, I can't help but think that anime fans here are either in deep denial about their deviancy or straight-up lying about not jerking it to underage girls when they all have avatars of little girls. Just like every anime fan I've seen IRL they wear their "I watch shows about fucking cartoon children" badge on their sleeve but don't want to be called out on it. The kneejerk defensiveness from fans you see in every thread that exposes the depraved reality of anime is a dead giveaway.

It's creepy as fuck and if you have anime avatar, I'll ignore anything you type on your cum-encrusted keyboards because it's an admission that you don't actually know anything about real life and there's a good chance that you're a pedophile. You shouldn't be on NeoGAF, you should be in prison for CP. I'm glad that the GAF community has fostered an environment that promotes the marginalization and dismissal of fans of anime because they've earned it.

I know noone IRL that fits this description. Calm down.

The real joke is people getting defensive when such criticisms are levied without emotionally charged language. Planetes is an important series to me but that doesn't mean I make myself blind to its flaws.
I think that levying criticisms about flaws which do not exist was probably the "real" joke. I didn't, by the way, really get defensive there, *Lol* is more like a laughter, which is slightly different.
but hey, maybe it's just me that watched the anime without nitpicking on every potential sexist dialogue/scene that didn't give women enough justice, so I might have missed that critical flaw and I might have blindly enjoyed the show too much instead of whining about how much sexism there was in it.

the ending,
it's just Hachimaki being a selfish bastard, Tanabe is fine with that. (probably because love? She's that type of character and she was probably happy with that role) it's ok to dislike the scene and say that he did an awful thing, but that isn't the show being sexist.

The most important question about anime is where in fuck is my Biscuit Hammer anime I've been waiting forever for???. Or at least Voynich hotel or second season of Maoyuu or anything else.

Wait...why the hell are there two characters in two different series called Biscuit?

(The other is in HxH)

Supposedly Gainax was going to do Biscuit Hammer, but not anymore. Don't think it's happening years later.

Of course, Parasyte is getting an anime well after the manga finished, so who knows.

I have a lot of friends who like anime and I always just tell them I hate it so I don't have hear some discussion about whatever crap fan service anime it is that they are into. It just mostly seems insipid and uncreative especially all of the popular ones.

This is akin to saying Facebook sucks because your friends make crappy posts. But I'm assuming at no point did you ever think it was your friends with weird taste...

"Gainax doing Biscuit Hammer" rumor has been going around for years.
That dream is dead, sunk and lying at the bottom of the ocean as far as I'm concerned which is fine. If another studio happens to pick it up, that's okay with me. People have too much of a hardon for Gainax.

EDIT Whoops how did that happen

It was planned to air instead of Panty&Stocking but there was a problem with getting the Pillows that caused a delay. The Pillows wanted to do the OST but there was some issue with management or whatever and it couldn't get resolved in a timely manner so P&S got pushed forward instead.

God fucking damn it. I'm still salty.

Don't forget me! I wake up in the morning and the first thing I do is hate anything anime or anime-ish and call everyone who likes anything anime or anime-ish a filthy hypocritical pervert!

(In joke and sarcasm. Just in case. But I still don't like anime. It is a strange world and what little I know of it seems like it's tailor made for not-me)

(sorry. Not my best post. I'll get my coat)

Godddd, I liked Panty and Stocking too, but still.

Damnit someone just give it to me I almost don't care who.

I always wondered if these "jokes" never get old. I mean after some time why would you reuse the same jokes over and over again since 20 years?

The same reason businesses in Japan still regularly use fax machines: tradition. "Because it's always been that way" is an answer I get all the time when I ask why things work a certain way. It's just the culture here. They are very slow to adapt to changing times and trends and anime tropes are mostly an encapsulation of that particular idiosyncrasy.

THIS

omg :x whenever i have to send stuff to my mom, she's like, just fax it through. and im like no one uses fax here anymore and she's always so surprised

:x

As anime became more popular i saw more people complaining about certain aspects of it .
Mind you some it is also from old school fans saying things were better back in the day ( no it was not) or people labeling everything moe .
Still from what i notice more and more people now watch anime since it so easy to get .

Moe killed my love for anime.

You know I honestly have no idea how Moe started or why it's so popular but as long as it continues to sell merchandise for the companies involved it will continue to exist and that makes me sad. That said there are still plenty of non Moe anime getting made and released on a regular basis. I'm often in awe of just how many new anime series there are every season on cable here. Granted most are mediocre at best but there are inevitably a few gems hidden in the natto somewhere.

in case you didnt know (I had copied the excerpt back then, but new website hasnt it yet):

http://spakeprm.com/2007/05/kanashimi_no_be.html

About the blacklisting: I've heard from a couple of interviews with longtime animators, I think one of them was otsuka himself , that at the time that people suspected of supporting communist ideology and who took part in protests had a hard time to get jobs in the cinema and television industry or with major newspapers and could only get jobs in "fringe" industries like porn films, animation and manga.
That was nothing like 50's witch hunt in the US as it was not officially enforced, but like some kind of unwritten rule.
And Toshio Okada said that was the main difference between the industry now, post anime boom and back then. There is not much about it to be found in english though, so you're gonna have to look it up on japanese media if you want more information.

Which protests? The link throws up an error and google isn't being that helpful. Do you mind answering please?

I don't think hate is the right word for the way I feel about (non-Ghibli) anime. More like intense indifference?

I do ask for suggestions every now and then, but those usually end up in disappointment. The most recent ones being Kill La Kill (BURN IT WITH FIRE) and Attack on Titan.

The Wind Rises was amazing, though.

Anyone who would recommend Kill la Kill to you because you like Ghibli movies is a dumbass.

It's not just you. I like anime and thought KLK and AoT were awful as well.

Tell me about it. Whenever I ask for suggestions, I usually mention Ghibli, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Shamploo, GitS, Akira, etc. KLK was not even remotely like those. In fact I thought it was pretty gross.

I think the only good suggestions I've ever received were from an anime suggestions thread I started here several months ago. Not all of them hit the spot, but I actually liked a couple of them.

I really don't know anyone that hates anime, in fact I work with men and women in their 30's and 40's that still love it. I personally have kind of moved away from most anime but thats because of fillers and/or a lack of recommendations. Oh and I have no time really. To me it seems like these people are just trying to sound cool.

You should just ask in the seasonal anime threads. Lot of knowledgeable people there that will give recommendations perfectly catered to your tastes.

Giant Bombcast this week has "MGS is really Anime, part II."

Dan's slowly realizing he's deep in the Anime closet.

...How do you go from Ghibli to KLK?

If you do need suggestions for Anime however, check out Wolf's Rain. That shouldn't end up in disappointment.

Anime always seems like it's treasured by the weirdos, I wouldn't be surprised if the people I knew in HS who liked anime became pedos, considering that a lot of anime sexualizes little girls. It's a disgusting industry.

HDU

it's CULTURE. you cant apply your WESTERNIZED values to my animes!

/s

Although I disagree that animes are treasured by weirdos, I do think there's a lot of problems with infantilizing and representation of women sexuality in animes. But I think it's unfair to say that most anime fans are pedo. There are actually a lot of decent animes, you just need to know where to look and who to get recs from. But yeah, I agree that there are strong trends in anime that currently disturbs me a hella lot too.
