Is New Zealand a nice place to visit?

I'm thinking about either going there, or Japan. I like Japan because of all the cool gadgets and sites and whatnot, but I heard that you can go to the various places where the LotR films were made. If that's true, besides that, is there any other good places to visit? And what's the crime rate like just out of curiosity.

NZ is very far away from everywhere except Australia and is liable to sink into the sea at any moment.

wtf? It's not going to sink into the sea....

And to the original poster's point, you could not have picked any two more disparate locations. New Zealand is the absolute best place to visit in the world (IMO), but realize it's almost all natural beauty. It's a great mix of fjords, glaciers, plains, and incredible mountain vistas. And there's also a lot of sheep. But if you were considering Japan for the culture, I think you'll be really unhappy with New Zealand.

NZ, being the result of volcanic/tectonic action, could dissappear just as quickly as it appeared, and it will happen. They don't like to talk about it in NZ, but it's an established scientific fact and has happened in the past, as in the case of Atlantis.

Another little-known fact about NZ is that it's the only country in the world that has given an animal (sheep) the right to vote.

2 things:

1) Are you serious? You realize that Atlantis never existed, and was a created by Plato to serve as an example for his texts, right? Only a few crackpots actually believe that the story Plato tells of the city is actually true. Read more here.

2) Yes, it will happen, just like how California will someday break off from the rest of America and sink into the pacific. It doesn't mean you actually have to worry about it actually happening anytime soon.

How's the food in New Zealand? I'd really like to take a trip there, stay near the coast, look at...things, and good food is really important to me. What kind of food is it famous for? Good seafood? What are the must-sees of NZ?

How's the food in New Zealand?

I'm guessing the seafood is good. It's out in the middle of nowhere next to unpolluted coldwater. Probably beats the hell out of the mercury infested or farmed fish we get in the majority of the US.

Well since Australia is banned, you may as well go to the other nation!

Also.. I wouldn't discredit Plato. He/They did talk about Troy and it was discovered only through sheer insanity by Heinrich Schliemann.

did you read the link in my post? The two comparisons are completely different. Troy and the Trojan war dominated Greek cultural history and the Illiad is derived from a long history of multicultural oral tradition - Atlantis is only mentioned by Plato and is completely left out of every other Greek historian. Schliemann also used rough locations predicted by others for Troy's location, so it wasn't really a "stab in the dark" as it is often painted.

It was actually filmed in NZ. :lol

There's some really fantastic places to visit here, but if you're not into the outdoorsy stuff you'd probably get bored.

Yeah, that made me laugh - using Last Samurai as an example for beautiful scenery for Japan, when a large part of it was filmed in NZ (probably the scenery - I dunno - Haven't seen it). O the irony!

There is some impressive stuff here, but then, I haven't seen all that much in the way of the world.

For awesome scenery, definitely visit the South Island.

Nonsense. It was filmed on location in Middle Earth.

:lol yup, Mt Fuji is actually Mt Taranaki.

I'm from NZ and recently did a bit a trip around, If you want to see scenic stuff, go to south island, but north has some awesome beaches etc as well. Look up the coromandel on the net before you go (north island) and you want to see wanaka and Queenstown for tourist themed places in the south. Check out Christchurch for the South island city, it's the best one. And wellington is the best north island City. Auckland is full of strange weirdos that will rob you. Totally crime free in Wellington though :D.

I'd post some pictures, but I'm too lazy.

I'm in Auckland and can confirm it's totally different from most other places in NZ. I did my first visit to the South Island a couple years ago, and when saying that I came from Auckland one reply was, "So you're not from New Zealand, then...;)".

Anyway, Queenstown is pretty awesome (if touristy), and Fox Glacier was beautiful. Hilghlight of the trip was MArlborough Sounds. Wanaka is amazing, as is Te Anau (The Marshes on LotR). Christchurch is a bit bleh. Haven't been to Wellington in ages...shoudl visit sometime.

Speaking as a Kiwi myself (born and bred), I might be a tad biased, but I absolutely recommend my country. It's very clean and green, no smog etc. even in the large cities.

You asked about the crime rate Synbios, it's very low, especially in the tourist-driven areas like Queenstown (South Island) where the people are extremely hospitable to tourists and take every effort to ensure you're safe and having a good time.

Anyhoo we have a whole website set up for this kinda thing - http://www.newzealand.com/

Check out the 100% Pure TV Commercial from that main page, should give you a taste.

Hang on, where was it that the bouncer killed you and your friends and you took him to court?

The whole country would die if it weren't for Auckland :D

Haha owned.

Even though I was born in Auckland, I have absolutley no desire to return to the place. Visit Wellington, you can walk across the city in 40 minutes.

Seriously though, NZ rules, and I have no desire to ever live anywhere else.

I was born in Gisborne, which has a great climate and probably the best beaches (not a hell of a lot else mind). I'm studying in Palmerston North, and for god's sake don't bother coming here.

Auckland is also cool, it's just really big (by our standards) 1 quarter of the population is there. Just go everywhere anyway you can cover the whole island in a van for probably less than a new zealand 1000 bucks.

Freestyler, you are pimping the wrong flag in your avatar :D

EDIT: OH and that bouncer guy is paying a shitload for a hotshot lawyer and all I have to do is turn up. He lost his stake in the bar as well :lol

Awww, and you were doing so well till you said 'Atlantis'.

Not really, I just want people to know that I respect the USA and I can't wait to go there again (haven't been since I was little!). I'm sick of all the anti-America crap the whole world has going on, my avatar is just my way of expressing my anti-anti-USA stance :)

Good to hear you're winning against the bar guy though catfish, good stuff!
