Is OutRun2 deliberately designed to make you feel awkward?

It's got that gratingly weird Japanese arcade "pizazz" to it that is just really unsettling to me. I feel like if I showed the game to my friends, the soundtrack would lead them to assume that I'm coming out of the closet.

I mean its still a sexy game and all, and I realize that a lot of it is homage to the similarly campy (yet not quite as.."flamboyant") original, but everytime I get done with an extended session of silky gameplay and gorgeous visuals I cringe as I'm thrust back into this exceedingly splashy weirdfest. I just wish I could take the trappings from any other marginal racing game of the past few years (SRS..Test Drive..ANYTHING) and paste them over the spunky menus and gay-pride track selections, but leave the killer gameplay and gfx in place.

Alas, I continue to torture myself, as my lust for powerslides and scenic vistas forces me to continue playing. But the minute I catch myself singing the lyrics to "Night Flight", I'm throwing the game out the window..

If beautiful, bright and colorful graphics, insanely catchy original music, and and a kickass laid-back/inviting atmosphere are gay, I don't wanna be straight.

Perhaps all your postings about having sex with women is actually an elaborate cover for what is clearly your insecurity with your own sexuality?

The game didn't give me a wierd feeling, as I'm pretty used to the campy Sega style atmosphere of their arcade games. Actually, I can relate to the game pretty well from my own personal experience as the game itself reminds me of when me and my father would take a ride out in the country, listening to some contemporary jazz.

The game was seemingly made for me no doubt, but Ned, you might be on to something about the game's lack of popularity. There seems to be no room for uniqueness or something that is perceived to be out of touch with what people really want.

IAWTP. Outrun 2 is a feel good game.

Maybe you should let go and accept that you are gay, you don't need to hide it.

Seriously though Outrun 2 is pretty gay, but I think it is part of the character of the game. It you plastered graphics and menus that were "serious" on it I wonder how the game would be received. I like it, I question whether I should have bought it though as I think it may have been a better 3-4 day rental.

In response to recent criticisms, Sega has announced that the upcoming Outrun 3 will feature a goth driver and his girlfriend driving a jet-black spiked Ferrari on a selection of nighttime courses to a soundtrack by hit recording artists Godsmack. :p

It came out on the wrong console. XBOX owners are all steak eating dudes that hate gays, so no chance in hell they're gonna get Outrun2. Should've released it on the Cube/PS2 instead SEGA!

I'd have never bought this game if I had to put up with the GameCubes wacked out pad. It released on the console I prefer to enjoy racers on so +1 for Sega.

Ha ha, yeah, that's somewhat accurate it would seem...

"What? A game that isn't about Football or Tom Clancy? Fuck that!"

:lol :lol :lol

-1 sale for outrun 3

Outrun2 rocks..plain and simple but you must like coin op racing games to enjoy this game. Also you must be use to Sega's style of arcade videogames..or your just not gonna appreciate it.

I think it was well done and is a top game

I will never understand the hate given towards Outrun 2. Really makes no sense to me. The game is fucking wonderful.

I haven't touched Burnout 3 since I got it.

I hear you... I even beat all 20 outrun challange tracks. I just couldn't stop playing. I can see why it gets overshadowed by other more Westernized racing games though.

Outrun 2 rocks, but I don't like how Sega fucked us again by giving Japan the better version by including extra tracks (or so I heard)

You might be confusing the home version of Outrun 2 with the new arcade revision. I don't think Japan got a different home version of O2. Shoot, I'm not even sure that the Xbox version of O2 came out all in Japan.

It's coming out in Japan in a couple weeks I think, and I remember someone posting here saying that the new arcade revision tracks are in it, but I wasn't sure if it was a rumor or not

Outrun 2 is awesome. Brings back the classic Sega arcade-racing flavor. It is my go-to game when I need a quick fix of arcade action...and then usually stay to finish off a few more challenges on the side.

And LOL of all racers, how does the one that is built around impressing your girlfriend with the Ferrari she gave you get branded the "gay"?

that was a rumor from Magic Box. The developers from Sumo Digital said on a couple of forums that no extra tracks or cars were being programmed in to outrun 2 for Japan. Sumo Digital said the only changes were they were going to put a bit more polish on the Daytona and scud racer tracks and gong to change the english menus to Japanese.

exactly. i just picked it up last night, so i haven't played it for more than an hour or two, but it's a great "pick up and play" type of game. the different paths only add to it's replayability.

as far as the "fruitiness" goes, i noticed it right away, but just chalked it up to the fact that it's a japanese-developed game. i suppose i'm open-minded enough to appreciate it...

I love this game so much. The last time I loved a racing game like this was Daytona on Saturn and DC, also from Sega. Anyone remember the awesome (and probably gay to you) music and vocals of those games? I ripped the tracks to Mp3!

OutRun2 features the same great tracks, design, feel, and music. Games like SRS, PGR, and GT bore me to tears. Something about the Sega arcade formula just works for me.

BTW, OutRun2 is supposedly $19.99 at Wal-Mart now (according to several posters on CheapAssGamer.com) so go pick it up! It's definately worth that price.

a rumor and a totally bogus one at that.

Why is it that Mr. Driller threads are never invaded by the sexually insecure, but when it comes to things like say, music - if the muzak is like, too "happy" then it's teh ghey and we must fear that our cigar-chomping INCREDIBLY STRAIGHT MANO-E-MANO FRIENDS will they we are teh ghey for listening to it?

Speaking as a gay man, I can say that I've yet to encounter any music which makes me feel "more gay". This includes the Yatta song. I think all you rod-straight guys out there can stop worrying.

Are you kidding me? Mr Driller was absolutely blasted for being "gay" when it first came out. The fact that his jumpsuit is neon-Pink didn't help.

Nor does this:
