I'm new to PS5 and don't have a large library. Was thinking about getting Playstation Plus for 12 months which is £99 in the UK.
Is it worth it. What do folks think?

Extra is quite good, but even premium has started to build a decent selection of classic games which was terrible at first. If you have a varied taste in games and like to try things, it can be quite good and save you money. Just don't expect many brand new games day one or Sony first party stuff, you'll be disappointed.

Yes, there's a lot of great stuff. You can go to check its website to see all the games it has on its game catalog (Plus Extra and Plus Premium) and the classics catalog (Plus Premium), I think it's worth to get the yearly fee only for this.

And something pretty cool: the extra discounts. Several years I saved more money from the discounts than the one needed to pay the yearly fee.

And then there's the monthly games, for all (like cloud saves or online MP) tiers. Most games included there won't interest you, but almost every month you'll get there some game you want to play or that weren't interested enough to buy it even if heavily discounted but because being included there you may want to try it. So again, at the end of the year if you see al these games that interested you it's also worth the price only for these games.

And then there are extras like the cloud saves and online MP for all tiers, and in case of premium, there's the cloud gaming and the free trials in case you're interested on them.

I think even with its huge price the yearly Premium fee is a good deal (obviously depending on your tastes and budget).

I am good with the monthly games since I tend to buy the games I am interested in. I tried Premium for the first year or two but I did not find myself playing any games from the catalog; even the ones that I downloaded. My experience was the same with Game Pass. I have Essential now on the PS5 and no game pass with Xbox right now.

I'm trying out Premium this year. I was going to get extra but there are enough games in the classic catalog that I want to play for it to be worth it. Not sure Extra is worth the price either, but we will see. If it isn't then I'll downgrade to Essentials.

Still sucks that cloud saves are stuck behind a pay wall. Come on Sony.

Subscription services are never worth it - they give you an illusion of choice. Figure out how many games you play and how much time you spend gaming, then make a decision accordingly.

It could be, depends on how much games you already played from Plus library.. for me it was ok, i got 2 years of Plus before the move from Now, was about $65 per year and i got to try games like Demon's Souls and Death Stranding, it also let me try games i normally wouldn't like Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which i ended up really enjoying.
So yeah if you didn't play many of the games listed then yes a year sub will let you enjoy many games that will cost you a lot buying.

Not really. I had it for a year and barely used it. The base tier is fine since you need it for multiplayer and occasionally you'll get a good game like Dave the Diver in it. IMO the higher tiers are a trap. Same with gamepass, when I had it I ended up barely using it for anything as everything I wanted to play wasnt on it and the things that I did want to play on it ended up being put on the backlog due to not having wanted to play them on launch i.e. there was always a game I wanted to play more coming out

Depends on whether there are a number of titles you want to play in the Extra catalogue. If yes, then I guess it's worth it. If not, well then no it's not.

Eh unless you're new to the platform and doesn't have a library or play specific multiplayer titles, it's waste of money for someone with a good backlog already.

I'd say just look at the catalog, but really you should use a trial first. See how it fits into your habits.

I was literally informed by GAF posters that PS5 Pro is intended for offline, single player games only.

If you don't have a large library, PS plus extra offers great values. The first-party games alone like Demon's Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, etc. make it worth subbing for one year. Let alone the quality third-party games.

It offers nice variety and you can definitely find some games you like to play.

Not even remotely worth it.

I subscribed since 2016, when it was fantastic with free PSP, Vita, PS3, and PS4 games every month. It was also very cheap. Even up until two years ago, I was paying $30 per year.

Now, it is over $100 a year, and you get two old or worthless games each month, and you are lucky if one of them is designed for PS5.

I cancelled my subscription and lost access to all of those games. Either years of games, gone.

Just straight up buy the games you want to play. Buy the disc, play, then keep or trade/sell.

I don't know if any big chains like GameStop does this in other countries but here in Canada when you trade a used game you get a 50% bonus towards a preorder or new release within a two weeks frame. If you don't care about keeping your games (which I don't once I'm done with it) then it's basically a circle that never ends. I bought astro bot for 50 cents with two old games. I just picked up refantazio which I'll trade once I'm done with it and I'll try end up paying maybe 10$ for a brand new game which I find better than a monthly fee

If you don't care about playing the latest games and you have a somewhat varied taste I would argue the Extra tear is definitely worth it for a newcomer to the system. Specially if you wait for a sale (there will probably be one on Black Friday).

You get access to a bunch of cool, albeit older, exclusives like Returnal, Ratchet, Demon Souls, TLOU1 Remake, a bunch of nicely enhanced Ps5 version of games like Tsushima, Miles Morales, Death Stranding, etc and a metric ton of indies and older AAA games.

The regular PS+ I'd say is only worth it if you want to play a lot of online stuff. If you want it for the "free" monthly games I'd argue you are probably better off spending the money buying 2-3 specific games you want (on sale) instead of hoping the selection of titles over the next 12 months will be to your liking.

For someone without a library its insane value.
I own most games already, and even I find value from the handful of excellent day one Indies that are added (they are very good at selecting those), and for the ps+ discounts you get on regular purchases (those discounts alone generally justify the cost for me over the year).

I get more use and value from it than games pass personally...which I always remember 'crap I need to cancel that' every time I comment on one of these threads...then I promptly forget to do so.

I missed out so much on last gen (first and third party) games that it was a massive deal after getting a PS5. Fucking huge, actually. Sadly it's less so now having played so many things in addition to the price increase. It also fits my gaming style of obviously having the PS titles I'm most interested in (mostly) but also offering up a bunch of stuffed I'd likely have passed on. Also helps that I'm really not the kind of person who goes back to replay games.

Regular PS Plus? If you're playing a lot of MP? Then I'd say probably. There's also some pretty nice discounts if you have plus. I still think it's more expensive than it need to be.

I just resubbed after 3 months off. I’ve been a Plus member since 2011. What I missed the most were my cloud saves and then there was no multiplayer options for MvC or Space Marines II. I play online maybe a couple times a year. I mainly play single player and I also wanted to play this year’s CoD.

I resubbed after really thinking about it. I don’t need anything but the basic package and it was $85 after tax. I could have bought a game for that price, but I can’t play anything that has an online feature. I went ahead and did it. I kinda miss the days when you could get 12 months for $38. I stacked them for a while and didn’t think to keep doing it.

Basic will be plenty for most. If the other tiers feature games that you will play and keep you engaged for the duration of your subscription then go for it.

Yes, especially the middle-tier, but check the library first to see whats there. You could potentially save yourself hundreds of dollars, there's a lot of games there.

I have the highest tier and that's good too. Most people act like Sony's cloud gaming is unplayable but it's not at all. Many PS3 games that people want are available and they all play fine. The biggest issue is that they are locked to 720p, but if you're dying for some of those games and if the PS5 is your only route, it's not a bad situation and it's not like you have to stay with it, pay for a month and plow through some PS3 gems.

Yes it is. I have premium but extra is probably the most subbed.

You can look up extra and premium and check it out. It's 400 or so ps4/ps5 games so yiu immediately have a huge library.

As a few others have said, wait until Black Friday for around 25-33% off the price

But also.... buy it with discounted wallet top up from shopto or other places. The topups are regularly 10-16% off and may be more again around Black Friday

No one should be paying £99 for it at any time of the year

No.

Unless you play online, but then it's more of a necessity as opposed to a value proposition.

I cancelled my sub after the latest price increase.
