Is refusing to date people of certain races racist?

So, most people are not attractive to me - I have a broad 'type' but I still generally find the same sorts of people attractive. That being said, I am often surprised when I find someone attractive that I don't normally expect to find attractive, which tells me that it's not like I'm married to my type.

So I say this to highlight the idea that there is no way for me to predict whether or not I'll find someone attractive BEFORE I meet them. I find redheads attractive, but I don't find EVERY redhead attractive.

If you feel as though the ethnicity of someone has such a strong affect on whether or not you'll find them attractive, that you'll preemptively rule people out because of that? Maybe you need to reevaluate some stuff.

Absolutely, if you closed the door on a race, it's because you're a racist. I also would consider you a racist if you only date one race specifically. Not only have dated but if you close the door on all other races.

As a straight man, would I be a homophobe if I'm not attracted to a gay man? No, I do not think that would be accurate at all. What makes this a different situation with the given facts?

This is an interesting debate that could bring so meaningful dialogue and hopefully more understanding amongst different people.

This is what I was hoping to see to be honest. In truth I think that the reason why he won't date black girls is because he is afraid of black culture. I don't think that it's because he isn't attracted to them to be honest.

I never understood this debate.. everyone has preferences. But as soon as skin color gets involved everyone is suddenly shouting RACIST RACIST RACIST like.. no not really?

I've dated other races before so I'm not part of all this - but still. If someone does not want to date a black person because the black skin is 'aesthetically' unappealing and/or just not attractive to them then yeah they're super shallow for not looking past that - but how's that different than disliking any other trait?

You made a thread determined to get an answer you already made for yourself and are determined to not view your friend's act as anything other than what it is.

Racist as shit.

If someone is explicitly only dating people of that race, then that clearly becomes fetishism which is its own problem, as you're basically boiling someone's attractiveness down to their racial characteristics versus anything regarding their own individuality.

So then where is the line? If “refuses to date X” implies racism, then it seems to me that “refuses to date X for all X != Y” implies racism against everything but Y. It’s literally just a straight logical corollary.

If we can agree that “only dates X” is not necessarily racism, then it necessarily implies that “does not date X” is also not necessarily racism

What is "black skin"? Can you give me a specific colour or shade?

So the original premise of the thread was whether someone "afraid of black culture" is racist?

Yes.

But there are tons of shades of black skin so what kind of skin is unappealing?

Can you ask your friend specifically where on the chart he's willing to draw the line as to who's datable or not?

Racist as shit.

Oh I don't care for an answer from the gaf because I already have my own opinion on the matter. I wanted to get meaningful discussion about this topic going but it's just devolved into an echo chamber.

What the fuck is black culture my man? Are we all in a box? Is it one size fits all's? Like what are you even typing out ?

You literally came in here looking for an echo chamber...

What's black culture? Rap cars?

People view your racist friend as racist = echo chamber

Real fucking nice troll

This is also racist. And stupid as fuck.

So... What are your views on the subject? Since the object of this thread wasn't to actually listen to the answers?

Then why did you frame the thread as a question in the first place?

And echo chamber? I'd hope so, considering what you're describing is quite literally racism.

Everyone I've come across who's said that to me has turned out to be at least mildly racist.

"Generally, I'm not attracted to <x>", however, doesn't strike me as racist.

Plot twist...

Nah, I probably should've seen this coming.

'echo chanmber'? you're getting answers to your question.

...
Wut?
This is odd for so many different reasons.

I'm also still doubtful about this being your "friend"...

Brah where are all these orange women at?

Photo shoots. My buddy is a photographer and some of the girls that come into his studio just look like they've been burnt to a crisp or overdid the bronzer. It's some Jersey Shore-esque looks I've seen while hanging out during a shoot.

"Asks if not wanting to date someone for their race is racist"
"Majority of people say yes"
"Accuses thread of being echo chamber"

There's nothing to be said that hasn't already been expanded upon better by other posters.

If you can honestly say, that you will never, ever, under any circumstances date a person of a race solely because of their race then, yes, you're 100% racist.

Sounds like bodybuilder tans

I'm picturing it like OP said, "hey man, is that black chick hot to you?" And friend is like, "nah, not really my type" and OP came back with "yeah, I don't like black chicks either, scary culture right?" and turns away to start this thread while his friend gives him the side eye in the background.

I'm not going to explain what black culture is to you. If you want to know what it is then look it up for yourself. Many people are afraid of the unknown so I understand his fear since he was born from an upper middle class family in a super white neighborhood where he only really interacted with a handful of people who weren't white until he went to college. I believe that this is more of a issue that happens to many people who don't didn't grow up regularly interacting with people of color.
