Is Street Fighter 4 the best fighting game of all time?

It's during times like these I wish I didn't change my avatar...Hey I can change it back :)

Then again perhaps this is a question I should not answer since I really do suck at fighting games but I really enjoy them and I enjoy them even more together with friends and the game, imo, which I think is the best fighting game ever is avatarquote.png

I have to agree with the majority, 3rd strike is definitely the best SF to grace video games.
I couldn't say if it was the best fighter ever made but it's definitely up there.
The skill required to play is astounding. So many commands to memorize, timing is essential and the game seems much more fast paced than other installments.
Honestly, I love the animations, too

Sales figures of fighting games since the release of SFIV say otherwise.

Yeah despite my reservations of the game itself tournament participation numbers shot through the roof after 2009. There's a reason why us old guys used to call em 09ers.

Also, these guys talking up 3S have probably never played 3S in a competitive level. Parrying basically dropped the game into a guessing game after you make what originally would be a sound decision.

I would like to know if SF1 fanboys reacted the same way when SF2 was released. If they called it dumbed-down because the special moves became easier to perform and combos meant free damage.

Quarters were wasted trying to even attempt to do special moves in SF1. The input alleviation in SF2 was nothing more than a blessing.

Why is it that there are only a couple mentions of smash in this thread?
I personally don't like the game, but wasn't melee GAf's fighting game of the generation or something?

A whole lot of replies refer to other capcom games. Why are the result so different?

I wonder what would differ if the title was "what was the best fighting game of all time?"

I really don't know about SFIV. There are times when I've had fun with it but a lot of other times where it's just been frustrating as hell. I've put a couple hundred hours into it and it just never clicked for me in the same way other FGs have. I even had a more consistently enjoyable time with SFxT (game has way better mechanics than SFIV, IMO).

My favorite Capcom fighter has to be Darkstalkers 3. It feels kinda weird saying that because I actually haven't played it very much (played it for the first time when Darkstalkers Resurrection came out), but that game just fit me like a glove from the moment I started.
More people should play it. Everybody talks about how great it is (me included), but it has like a 25 person scene in North America.

MKX is the best fighter ever made. /Kappa. I kid I kid. SFIV IMO is not the best but its up there IMO. SF2: ST to me is the best fighting game ever made. TC is an 09er confirmed? I kid again, don't ban me haha.

It has stuff I like, but the best? Nah, I dislike it's damage scaling for one thing and its restricting combo system.

For real. Very often, people who think very highly of older fighting games act as if this wasn't important at all. IMO, balance is extremely important, and a meta-game revolving around a handful of characters reflects a huge design flaw.

This is not to say there aren't older balanced fighters, but 3rd Strike is not one of them, and neither are the Alphas.

To be fair, balancing the game was much harder in the past. With no patches, you only had one opportunity, once the game was released if people discovered bugs, glitches, infinites, broken moves, etc. there was nothing you could do except... release another game. Now it's easier, you can even update arcade cabs so you can start from a beta version and fix what's wrong as you go on.

What are you talking about? Tekken 5 brought in way more money for Namco than SF4 did and that came out several years before it. If anything, the numbers for a lot of non capcom fighting games not named Mortal Kombat have gone down since the release of SFIV, which kind of proves Skilletor's point.

But OP that's not Darkstalkers 3, Garou, or KoF2002

with that said "comeback" mechanics as though it's a bad thing is laughable as there is another series that has "comeback" mechanics done beautifully

it's called Samurai Shodown

I'd be a bigger a fan of it if all the characters didn't look like apes on steroids. The best recent Street Fighter design recently has been Ryu and ChunLi in Tatsunoko VS Capcom.

I cant help but feel that denying the bare acceptance of USFIV's quality and the amount of popularity it brought to fighting games (yes, that includes YOUR obscure "played by 30,000 people" series as well!) is almost like a pride-thing at this point. People just have to downplay SFIV's values.

Yes, que the long posts about how it "looks weird and certainly much worse than BlazBlue: Phantasmagorical Insanity 3.0: Calamity Rejected Edition" and how it is for filthy casuals unlike the parry system in SFIII (have you seen Evo moment #23212315, for real?). Or how the netcode is just horrible if you try to play with someone from a different continent - but just look at GGPO-based Favorite Japanese Series Of Mine 4: there, you will only have a few visible rollbacks and you can play with japanese people too!

Do not get me wrong, I bought half of these games, and I love SFIII too. They are all great.
But to gather around and start saying insanity like "it looks horrendus" and "the combat is just not good" or that "the netcode is horrible" (Seriously? I played SFIV for years with half of europe and it was a perfectly playable experience. We could get into the bad netcode territory, and it is not SF's. It is not perfect, but it is not BAD.), or how your game series's XYZ mechanics just trumps on focus attacks? This is just classless.

Have some class. Yeah, anyone is free to not like USFIV. Like, hey, I could not give a crap about Quake III back in the days, I prefered UT and later on, CS. But I did not parade around saying stuff like "meh, Q3 is totally not the fastest paced action. The action in UT just trumps it, and also, what is up with the textures?". I understood and accepted its superiority in areas where it was present.

I think in general I prefer 3rd Strike and even Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

Melee is definitely a contender for greatest fighter, but I wouldn't really compare it to the Street Fighter series.

Parrying actually has a flaw in that it kinda nullifies the point of zoning and range. I don't think Garou's Just Defend has that problem.

It could be, but it certainly is not my favorite. Far too complex for my tastes and the character design is awful (everyone is hideously muscular).

Out of all Capcom fighters, my favorite is probably Marvel vs Capcom 3, but that is mainly because of the fanservice. Amaterasu, Viewtiful Joe, Zero, Arthur and others in a fighting game? Yes, please. Tatsunoko vs Capcom was great too, I loved the weird picks for the Capcom cast (Volnutt instead of other more popular Mega Man or Tron, Kaijin no Soki, Saki, etc).

Out of all SNK fighters, Garou takes the cake for being absolutely gorgeous. The cast is really small which is a shame, but a lot of KOF games suffer from the opposite problem (having too many characters), so it was a nice balance. The Last Blade is amazing, too. And of course, KOF 98 deserves its fame.

I also really like Brawl (shut up) and Smash 4, as well as the original Smash. Melee is really bad IMO, not only the game is too fast, but the characters are too heavy and the art style is ugly. Brawl was great even though tripping was stupid and Smash 4's only issue is some of the new characters. Mortal Kombat X is another great game I really like, but sadly the PC version is a huge mess so it is hard to keep motivated to play it. High Voltage does it again :( But still, the gameplay is amazing and the new characters are a breath of fresh air the series needed.

Besides those series, I only really played the original Killer Instinct (fantastic game) and Skullgirls (fun, lovely soundtrack, too bad the community is... well). In short, I dunno which is the best fighting game, but those I mentioned are the ones that stand out the more for me. Oh, I also want to say I disagree with the stupid idea that an "offensive game" is better than a "defensive" one.

SFIV held it down six summers; damn, where's the love? *hums heart of the city*

Don't know about calling it the best, but it's easily my most played so it's my fav. With that said I do hope that SFV can do what SFxTK couldn't and take old yeller out the back though....

It did wonders for the community, but it's not my favourite. May be the one I've played most, but again, still not my favourite. I still put 3rd Strike, Alpha 2 (and 3) above it.

On a wider spectrum, the first Soul Calibur forever holds a special, snug space in my heart. Tekken 2, 3, Tag and 5 are all great games, too. Throw in Capcom vs SNK 2 as another love. And I've havent even mentioned Super SF/Super Turbo. Good heavens if it weren't for fighting games, I doubt I'd be into gaming much.

I jumped onto KOFXIII late, but bloody hell, that felt good!

A shame fighting games are something I've grown more distant with over the last couple of years. I don't want to, but I cannot manage my time well with them. Before I know it, the whole night has been used, when I've got so many other great games to play! I'll jump straight back in for SFV (and Tekken 7 to a much lesser degree)!

Probably not, but it's definitely up there.

Me and my mates still play it occasionally even after all this time. It's rare to get that kind of longevity out of a one on one fighter for me, though the expansions have obviously helped a lot on that score.

Wouldn't rate it as highly as SF2, but it's better than SF3 for sure... and there haven't exactly been a lot of fighters the past decade or so that match up to any of them, lets face it.

For Street Fighter I always preferred the Zero series. Though Third Strike was fantastic and most stands above 4.

- There are too many characters. Sounds crazy to complain about it but it's true. It prevents people from knowing every matchup and becoming proficient with all characters.

I completely agree with this part...

Give me 12 fighters, each with a distinct style, and I am happy.

Makes match ups less random.

I enjoyed all of the following more than Street Fighter IV.

- Street Fighter II Turbo/Super Turbo
- Street Fighter III 2nd Impact/3rd Strike
- Street Fighter Alpha 2/Alpha 3
- X-Men vs Street Fighter
- Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter

I also enjoyed these more than Street Fighter IV... if they count.

- Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix
- Marvel vs Capcom 1/2
- Capcom vs SNK 1/2
- Tatsunoko vs Capcom

As prevously mentioned. Can we stop pretending Street Fighter IV "saved" the fighting genre. All it did was help bring back Capcom fighters and influence Ed Boon to make Mortal Kombat 9.

3D fighters like SoulCalibur and Tekken 3 in the late 90's, are the reason why Capcom took a 10 year break. The 3D boom happened and Capcom refused to jump on board. Instead choosing to outsource the crappy EX series to Arika.

I hope Street Fighter V is fast because Street Fighter IV is kind of slow & boring.

Not even close.

In terms of pure fighting mechanics, Virtua Fighter 4/5 is the best or one of the KoF games.

Tekken Tag is also a good mainstream alternative to SF.

Sales figures of fighting games since the release of SFIV say otherwise.

Sales figures went down after SFIV for most games, even released by Capcom. It revitalised the Capcom scene, not the fighting scene in general. The fighting game scene was never dead, the big push came through streaming services like twitch/justin.tv.

3rd Strike is the game I played most with friends.

I was a bit out of gaming when 4 was released, but have played a fair amount in the last 2 years. I had a great time with 4 as well but 3 is king in my book.

That being said, regarding how the scene was affected by 4, I think you can make an argument that 4 would be the best in that respect.

Gotta give my nod to Tekken 3. Great roster, crazy wake up options, great graphics for the time. Huge upgrade over the previous game in almost every way.

Same here, I had so much with Tekken 3, it will always be my favorite.

We could even unlock new game modes and costumes just by playing... Ah, the good ol' days without any paid DLC.

So while I enjoy a playing a fight or two in SF4, I prefer Tekken franchise.

SF4 games have definitely been my favorite fighters for a while. I think the only other games that come close for me are T5DR or SFA3.

Got to go with Tekken 3. Arguably there been better tekken games since then but when T3 came out it just blew me away. Was also the first fighting game i learned to play 'properly' so I'm a little biased :)
