Is the GameCube lineup underrated?

Can't say I'd prefer N64 (even in its day) over Gamecube, in any stretch; absence of Metroid being one of the biggest offenders for me. Throughout the N64's life, there may have been about a dozen games total that I would've felt the need to own - which is ridiculously low for my lax standards. My GC stack is up to 45 right now with only 2 questionably regrettable purchases. The only way I could've amassed any sort of profound respect for the N64 is if I pretended the PS1 and Saturn didn't exist.

the immense improvement of 3rd parties this gen is what puts GC above N64 imo. Maybe the first and second party titles are on par, but 3rd party titles this gen kick the ass of those on n64

Not even close.

Maybe that's because the N64 didn't have any third party games ;).

If you liked third party titles, you should've known from the beginning not to bother with a N64.

imo Smash Bros Melee and Metroid Prime are as good as anything i played on n64.

SSBM: Okay, I'll give you that one.
Metroid Prime: Well, we didn't have any big first person shooters last I remember.

Um, I'm not going to get into the argument of whether or not Metroid Prime is an FPS, but the N64 had SHITLOADS of FPS games.

It did? Hmm, I guess I never noticed. Was never into FPS games much.

Goldeneye says hi. Turok is waving too. The N64 is the reason consoles even have FPS games that aren't just crappy PC ports.

As for me, I'd say the Cube has had a great run. It just faded early, for several reasons.

The biggest reason, though, is because Nintendo games sell, and almost everything else doesn't. Since the N64's 3rd party support was so weak, Nintendo-published games became the only real reason to own a Nintendo home console. And that carried over to the Cube, even though it had very respectable 3rd party support for the first couple of years. But the 3rd party games didn't sell well enough, the 'mature' game market never materialized (I blame Wind Waker's kiddie Link for that), and so now here we are in the N64 "Nintendo/kiddie-only" situation again.
And the 1st-party support has been more hit-and-miss than on N64. The highs are, in my opinion, just as good (SSBM, Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, hopefully Twilight Princess). But the "not as good as the N64 one" games make the library look weaker--particularly Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker and Mario Kart Double Dash. When you can point to a flagship game like Mario or Zelda and say "it isn't as good as it should be", it makes the system look less appealing. And the endless Mario milking games make Nintendo look desperate.

Anyway, to answer the original question, yes, the Gamecube's lineup is underrated. The Cube takes a lot of justifiable criticism, but people who say it doesn't have a great game lineup don't have a clue.

Good god, I'm a fucking moron. It's what I get for not having my daily dose of caffiene.

Is the GC's lineup underated? Well, compared to what? There are two other consoles out right now that have simply a much larger # of superior quality games. I think you could make a strong argument that the N64 had a greatly underrated library of games. But, honestly, Nintendo's offering this gen was rather weak.

It really seems like, as far as consoles are concerned, Nintendo just phoned this gen in. While the newcomer was bending over backwards to gain and please its customers. Nintendo seemed to act as if they were still the market leaders. And almost as if us gamers owed them their loyalty for their past accomplishments. While the competition was going out of their way to secure and invest in talent in order to offer their customers with more gaming choices. Nintendo seemed content to pocket their profits and use very little to insure the people who actually purchased their console, that they would provide them with not only alot of games but alot of quality games.

It's different...

If you are a fan of arcade games, the DC is amazing for it. A lot of its other best games, though, have already been whored out so a lot of the library has lost its luster.

GC crushes N64, though, which really doesn't contain many playable games anymore. I've never cared for the library, and now, it's worse than ever.

GC has a solid library. I still own less than 20 games for it, but there are some real gems in there. Prime and RE4 are two of my favorite games this gen, for example. The machine itself is also the best hardware this gen.

People always bitch that the DC wasn't properly used...I think the GC had much more potential. Very few games even attempted to use its shader-like functions, for example. It could have done MUCH more...
