Is 'The Library' (Halo 1) The Worst FPS Level Ever?

I was watching a Halo 1 speed run movie and when it got to 'The Library', I couldn't help but remember how utterly shitty a level that was. And this is coming from a Halo fanboy. The level consisted of little more than the same room multiplied by a dozen times with a ton of spawning Flood sprinkled in. The entire level appears as though it consisted of about a meg of textures. Yeah, there are a few spots in Halo where the interior portions become repetitive, but this takes the case. Dare I say one of the best FPS out there contains one of the worst levels, or are there other contenders for the throne?

worst level in Halo is still 10x better than some of the crap i've played through.

Hell i cant think of a single level in Call of Duty : Finest Hour thats better than the library.

Good lord, think about what you're saying...

The WORST FPS level ever? No, it's not even close. There are some TRULY terrible FPS titles that have been released over the years. I mean, REALLLLLLY bad games that offer virtually no entertainment at all. How could you possibly suggest that something like the Library is actually the single worst FPS level of all time?

Technically 2002 is more accurate, but you get what I'm saying.

Probably because the extent of the FPS games he's played is Halo and maybe Goldeneye.

Buy a PC.

The Flood sections were where I stopped playing both games.

i watched my friend play through the library on the PC (i cant play fps games anymore) and i didnt see what was so bad about it?
very repetative, yes, but it seemed like a nice action sequence (albeit taken too far perhaps) after all the other stuff. there were literally tons of flood to blast through, and the grenade, rifle mechanics seemed very fun to utilize in different ways in every room.

What the hell was wrong with that level? The only section of the game where you had to revert to those doom like reflexes because of so many enemies on your ass. It was a little long, but worst FPS level ever? Not even close.

Alright, the original question was a little extreme, but compared to the rest of Halo as a whole I found The Library to be incredibly dull and repetitive. The entire map takes place inside a dark, drab homogenous area that consists of little more than you following Guilty Spark around while truckloads of the Flood were dumped in your lap. Whee. Compared to the previous excitement provided by the open spaces and vehicles of the outdoor areas, it was a definite down point in the game and one they thankfully didn't replicate in the sequel.

I've been playing PC FPS game since probably the mid 90's, so I've seen my fair share of stinkers in that arena. I guess none of them popped to mind quite as quickly. Daikitana actually had a few decent maps, it's just the rest of the game (so-called team AI, enemies, etc) that was a festering turd.

1) Isn't this post like, three years out of date?
2) I actually like the Library level very much. The actual environment is very repetitive, but I find the combat (or gamplay) to be fun and just focus on that.

i disliked the library so much that i started to like trying to play thru as fast as possible.. mainly by shotgun running and gunning, and jumping across ldges etc past many sequences...

Art design isn't going to win any awards, but the point of that level was obvious: non stop action. Weapons everywhere. Flood everywhere. Gotta beat ass to survive. There are going to be those that don't like that, but there are going to be a lot of others that will IMO. There are actually a lot of areas in there where you can easilly run by if you get tired of shooting, and just wait until the game locks you in certain areas to fight. More fun for me to kill everything though, especially in coop.

Usually people that hate that level tend to hate the flood overall, which is probably why I never agree. The flood gave me the most intense moments in that game because they were the only enemies that really chased you down. Turned the levels where you faced them to be really twitch and reflex heavy, which I love in games.

Hah, YES! I can't believe I forgot about that level. Half Life goes from the most incredible FPS experience I had at the time to an ending level that resembles a crappy 3D Mario level. I can respect that Valve was trying to make the end memorable, but bleck. Although the alien with what appeared to be a large nutsack was amusing...

I know what you mean man. I beat both but the Flood made me hate both games for a good bit. Thankfully the flood isn't in part 2 so much. It's going to such to have to face them in 3 again.

It's Xen, not Zen. And the latter parts of Xen (first few areas are quite nice actually) definately beat out The Library in suck factor. The Library is quite a step down from the rest of Halo, but I still enjoyed it. I have never finished the Xen finale without godmode and/or noclip though, and I consider HL my #1 FPS :P

I hear that from alot of people, even those that loved the game. I had to cheat myself to finish off that final boss. Then I went back to Xen and proceeded to spawn grunts everywhere to see what they'd do. It's pretty entertaining - they give the baddies hell. :D

Try the entire second half of Halo for worst fps levels (plural) ever.

Hmm, can't say I have any beef with the later levels, and the last level was incredibly fun, although frustrating at times. Still, such frustration is a byproduct of the necessary challenge. What would Metroid Prime 1/2 be without hair-tearing frustration (hold the snide remarks ;) ...

If you want an 'adrenalyne-ride' i would recommened the entire game of both Serious Sam's.

Cheers,

IAWTP

And I hope "IAWTP" hasn't become a ban offense yet..

Love the Library. Pure adrenalin-fueled run-and-gun -- it's Smash TV the FPS. In co-op, it's even better.

Worst FPS Level? The entire game of Strife.

Yes. Flood = crappy ripoff of the many from System Shock. I wish you could beat the flood to death with a wrench...

Ooh, I forgot about Turok 2. It's tied with Strife for shitty labyrinthine level design. Hate the Library all you want; at least it resembles ARCHITECTURE.

Marathon, a great FPS Bungie created years ago on the Mac and PC, had this one horrible level that had you running around looking for oxygen stations while killing aliens. Pain in the ass, and still in my book as the worst ever.

I hate the Library because I hate the Flood. Even still, there are multiple mediocre games with horrible level design that will make me run screaming back to the Libary on Legendary for comfort.

Daikatana
Red Faction II
Half-Life (Xen)

How can you hate SPACE ZOMBIES?
I don't hate all space zombies. I just hate space zombies that are ridiculously easy to kill and are in such great quantity that cutting through them seems more like a chore than a game.

You played on the wrong difficulty. Or you're too good to play video games. Congratulations.

Good afternoon tedtropy, there's somebody I want you to meet.

Have a spin with this one and you'll be praising Halo for its greatness. That is all.

NOT even close...this is why I love close-minded fanboys that know jackshit

Not even the greatness of Die Hard for the GC can claim the title of having the worst level ever
