Is The Rock the most charismatic entertainer of all time?

Eddie Murphy

I rewatched Beverly Hills Cop this weekend, first time seeing it since a kid and I was thinking whoooa this guy's charisma is off the scale.

When it comes to WWE alone, he is certainly the most charismatic.

Except for Bruno Sammartino, who sold out the Garden for years; Hulk Hogan, whose immense popularity brought wrestling to a national audience; and Stone Cold Steve Austin, a Rock contemporary who was equally as popular as Rock was.

See, the problem is "of all time" encompasses an awful long time. And even if you're looking at the tiny sliver of time that makes up the Rock's career, he simply doesn't qualify.

I don't even think the Rock is on the same playing field as a Bowie or Elvis or Elton or Brando, but I guess I can see how if you're young and don't really have any historical context to go off of, as far as modern wrestlers turned actors go, hes probably up there.

I'd say this guy is more charismatic, but I've never seen The Rock "live" (in any capacity):

Yeah, pretty much this. "Most charismatic entertainer of all time" is a pretty fucking broad topic.

This probably.

Also Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy were the greatest wrestlers of all time.

That sounds like a most popular list.

If you think what the Rock did to a WWE crowd was crazy, let me tell you about some boys who called themselves the Beatles.

Nah... but goddam the man has charisma. Aside from people who hate everybody, I don't know anybody who doesn't like The Rock.

Most of you are probably too young to remember Hulkamania.

Hogan aint close to the Rock on the charisma scale, even in his prime. Hogan made some films but they were mostly low-budget, WWF-backed junk (Suburban Commando, No Holds Barred, Mr. Nanny, etc), or he was an extra with almost no lines (Rocky). The Rock has had legitimate cross-over success and is one of the most wanted actors in Hollywood for action films and buddy comedies. Nobody but wrestling fans went to see Hogan's movies in the 1990s (most of them all bombed), and the Rock is the central focus of a lot of the movies he stars in, and most of them do well.

The Rock has also always been good in non-wrestling interviews. Hogan, at his prime Hulkamania era, wasn't. Watch Hogan's Arsenio Hall interview where he's out of his element even with a favorable host, he's awkward and not confident. The Rock could sell anybody anything.

The Rock from the 90s was indeed the most charismatic person on TV. He had fans that didn't even watch wrestling, which is a god damn feat. It was no surprise that he transitioned into an actor/ more generalized entertainer.

You can say he's the most charismatic entertainer in WWE history. I don't watch it, so maybe he is.

Most charismatic entertainer, full stop? He's not even in the top 10.

I don't think The Rock has ever been as popular as Stone Cold tbh

MJ would just stand motionless on a stage for a full minute or two and people lost their shit, during superbowl. So eh, maybe?

All time? Thread title is muddled by OP's opening sentence.

If I'm parsing his wrestling career and his Hollywood career, the former he might be the most charismatic, but the latter? He's got a looooooooong way to go on that front. Most SNL alumni have charisma on par with or greater than Rock.

I'm not knocking him, dude is a great performer with a very bright future ahead filled with possibilities, I'm just not ready to say he's surpassed Schwarzenegger in a substantive way. All time, remember?
